Samson 6116 i/p Converter for 4-20 mA to Pneumatic Signal
Description
Samson 6116 i/p converter for control valves and pneumatic positioners
The Samson 6116 is an electropneumatic (i/p) converter that turns a 4 to 20 mA direct-current signal into a proportional air pressure, typically 0.2 to 1 bar (3 to 15 psi). It is the link between an electronic controller or DCS output card and a pneumatic control valve, or between an electric measuring device and a pneumatic controller. The converter is built from a 6109 or 6112 i/p module with a downstream volume booster, which gives it a useful air flow even with a very small input current.
This page covers the Type 6116 family described in datasheet T 6116: suffix -0 for safe areas and suffixes -1 to -6 for explosion-protected versions with explosion protection. Seven Star LLC supplies the Samson 6116 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
Understanding the 6116 versions

How the 6116 converts current to pressure
The i/p module works on the force-balance principle. The input current flows through a plunger coil in a permanent magnet field and creates a force on a balance beam. That force is balanced by the dynamic back-pressure created when air leaves the nozzle against a flapper. When the current rises, the flapper closes toward the nozzle, back-pressure increases and the volume booster opens to let more air reach the output. When the current falls, the booster vents the output until balance returns.
Because the offset spring holds the output at roughly 100 mbar even at 0 mA, the 4 to 20 mA versions have a slide switch for switch-off electronics. When the input falls below about 4.08 mA, the input is treated as 0 mA and the output vents to around 100 mbar, which helps a valve to close tightly if the characteristic passes through zero, for example 0.2 to 1 bar.
Where the 6116 fits and related Samson parts
The 6116 can be wall, pipe or valve mounted, or fitted directly on a control valve with a NAMUR bracket. Direct attachment to the Type 3766-000 positioner is possible, and suffix -0 is also used with the 4765 pneumatic positioner. Related parts are the Type 6111 i/p converter (rail and field-unit design), Type 6126 converter, and electropneumatic positioners such as 3730-3, 3725 and 3767 when a pure i/p stage is not enough.
6116 selection and ordering checklist
- Input signal range and any split-range requirement.
- Output range needed: 0.2 to 1 bar, 0.4 to 2 bar or a special range up to 8 bar, which decides the 6109 or 6112 module.
- Hazardous-area approval, selected from the -1 to -6 suffix versions.
- Ambient temperature, including the low-temperature option to –45 °C.
- Mounting: wall, pipe, NAMUR on valve or combination with a pneumatic positioner, plus G ¼ or ¼-18 NPT ports.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the 6116
Install the converter horizontally with the pressure gauge or screw plug facing up. If another position is used, correct the zero with the ZERO adjuster. For IP54 devices the vent plug must face downward. Feed supply air that is dry and free of oil and dust to the ISO 8573-1 classes, and note that supply pressure must stay below 10 bar, or 6 bar for the Ex d version.
During commissioning, apply 4 mA and 20 mA and trim the ZERO and SPAN potentiometers on the version with electronics. Maintenance is light because air consumption is very low; replace the module when the filter upstream has failed or the zero cannot be corrected.
Typical applications of the 6116 in Oman and the GCC
The 6116 is a straightforward choice where plants still run pneumatic valve actuators with older pneumatic positioners, or where a robust converter is wanted in place of a smart positioner. It is common at refineries, gas plants, desalination blocks and power stations in the Gulf for converting DCS outputs near the valve. The aluminum enclosure and the –30 to +70 °C range suit outdoor service, and the choice of Ex d or Ex i versions covers many hazardous areas.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types
Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.
Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.
Where Samson valves are used
Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need
Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:
- Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
- Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
- Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter
We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.
Facts checked against SAMSON's corporate chronicle and press material, October 2026.

Questions about the Samson 6116 i/p Converter for 4-20 mA to Pneumatic
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What is the standard output range of the Samson 6116?
The 6109 module gives 0.2 to 1 bar (3 to 15 psi) from a 4 to 20 mA input. The 6112 module gives 0.4 to 2 bar, and special ranges up to 8 bar are possible.
02What does the switch-off electronics do?
On 4 to 20 mA versions it sets the input to 0 mA when the signal falls below about 4.08 mA, so the output vents to approximately 100 mbar. That helps tight shut-off of a valve.
03Which explosion-protected versions exist?
The datasheet lists suffix -1 (Ex i, ATEX/EAC), -2 (Ex d, ATEX/IECEx/EAC), -3 and -4 (CSA and FM) and -5 and -6 (IECEx variants).
04What supply air does the 6116 need?
Supply must be at least 0.4 bar above the upper signal range and no more than 10 bar, or 6 bar for the -2 version. The air should be dry and free of oil and dust, per ISO 8573-1.
05Can the 6116 be mounted directly on a valve?
Yes. It can be mounted on a wall or pipe, or on the control valve with a NAMUR bracket, and it can be attached directly to the Type 3766-000 positioner.
