Pepperl+Fuchs UC500-30GM-IUR2-V15 Ultrasonic Sensor

Description

UC500-30GM-IUR2-V15 M30 ultrasonic sensor with current and voltage outputs

The UC500-30GM-IUR2-V15 is a cylindrical ultrasonic distance sensor from Pepperl+Fuchs in an M30 x 1.5 stainless steel housing. It measures from 30 to 500 mm, provides both a 4 to 20 mA and a 0 to 10 V analog output, and can be set through a programming plug or an RS-232 interface with the ULTRA 3000 service program. It works on transparent, shiny and coloured targets alike, which is why ultrasonic sensors are used for levels and distances where optical sensors struggle.

In the part number, UC means the cylindrical ultrasonic series, 500 the sensing range in millimetres, 30GM the M30 threaded housing, IUR2 the analog output version with current, voltage and RS-232, and V15 an M12 5-pin plug.

Seven Star LLC supplies this sensor in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

How the UC500-30GM-IUR2-V15 measures distance

The transducer emits a short 380 kHz burst and measures the time until the echo returns; the distance follows from the speed of sound. Because sound speed changes with temperature, the sensor has a temperature compensation function using the temperature probe in the programming connector. Without compensation the drift is up to 0.2 % per kelvin, with it the total influence is limited to 2 % of full scale.

The analog functions are rising slope, falling slope and zero-line mode, and the near and far evaluation limits A1 and A2 can be set with the coded plug. Factory settings are A1 at 60 mm and A2 at 500 mm with a rising ramp. Both outputs follow the same characteristic, so a PLC card and a local indicator can be fed at once.

System fit and related parts

Use the UC500-30GM-IUR2-V15 for level in small open containers, loop control of material on conveyors, web diameter and height checks. For longer ranges choose the UB2000-F42 family, a rectangular sensor with 2000 mm range. Several sensors can be synchronized (common mode up to 95 Hz, multiplex up to 5 sensors) to avoid crosstalk.

Selection and ordering checklist

  • Measuring range: the target must lie beyond the 30 mm dead band and within 500 mm.
  • Target surface: flat plates give the best echo; round bars and slanted surfaces reduce it.
  • Output needed: current, voltage or both.
  • Supply 10 to 30 V DC and loads for each output.
  • Synchronization if several sensors face each other.
  • Cable and connector with M12 5-pin plug.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the UC500-30GM-IUR2-V15

Fit the sensor with the 30 mm thread clear of walls, and keep the sound path free of baffles. To program, remove the plug, reconnect the supply, place the target at A1, touch the plug at position A1, move the target to A2 and repeat; green and red LEDs show detection status. Use the coded plug at the E2/E3 position to select the mode of operation.

Clean the transducer face of dust and condensate, because heavy buildup attenuates the echo. The sensor is rated IP65, so avoid direct high-pressure washdown.

Practical limits of ultrasonic measurement

The UC500-30GM-IUR2-V15 reads the first echo inside its cone, so foam, turbulence, heavy vapour or a sloped surface can scatter the sound and cause dropouts. The characteristic curve in the datasheet shows how wide the detection zone is for a flat 100 mm plate and for a round bar of 25 mm diameter; a narrow target must be nearer to the axis than a flat plate. Plan the geometry with these curves before cutting a tank opening.

Temperature matters too: the speed of sound changes about 0.17 % per kelvin, so the temperature compensation in the programming plug is worth fitting when the air above a tank varies. In wind or in hot, rising air the reading can wander, and mounting the sensor in a short stand pipe or sunshade stabilises it. Keep cable shields grounded at the controller only.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

The UC500-30GM-IUR2-V15 is used on water and chemical dosing tanks, sand and aggregate hoppers, conveyor loops and packaging machines across Oman and the GCC. Heat is the main drift factor, so enable temperature compensation and avoid fitting the sensor in direct sun on tank roofs.

About brand

Pepperl+Fuchs is a German manufacturer of industrial sensors and explosion protection equipment, founded in 1945 in Mannheim by Walter Pepperl and Ludwig Fuchs as a radio repair shop. Defective transformers led them into manufacturing, and the company developed its first proximity switch in the late 1950s. Pepperl+Fuchs is headquartered in Mannheim and is a pioneer of intrinsically safe electrical equipment for hazardous areas.

Seven Star LLC lists Pepperl+Fuchs sensors, isolated barriers, power supplies and hazardous-area mobile devices, and supplies them to instrument and automation teams in Oman by exact model designation.

Where Pepperl+Fuchs equipment is used

Isolated barriers sit between field instruments in Zone 0 or Zone 1 and the DCS or safety system in refineries, gas plants and chemical works. NAMUR sensors report valve position and machine states in classified areas. Photoelectric sensors and LiDAR scanners work in conveying, packaging, warehousing and vehicle guidance. Ex-rated tablets and phones are carried on operator rounds and maintenance jobs.

Ordering Pepperl+Fuchs parts: what we need

Send the complete model designation as printed on the device, including every suffix; a single letter can change the supply voltage or the output type. Add the part number if the label shows one. For barriers, tell us the field device and signal type, the number of channels and whether the safety loop needs a SIL-assessed module. For mobile devices, state the zone or division and the regional radio version.
