Lantronix EDS3008PS1NS EDS3000PS 8-Port Desktop Device Server

A quiet desktop or wall-mount console and serial gateway for eight devices

The Lantronix EDS3008PS1NS is the 8-port EDS3000PS secure device server with a gigabit Ethernet uplink, a 100-240 VAC power supply and a standard power cord. It is a compact office-grade plastic enclosure designed to sit on a desk or hang on a wall, which the bulletin describes as suitable for medical and other high-visibility installations. Eight RJ45 serial ports give remote access to equipment such as network devices, servers, kiosks, security equipment and edge instruments.

Inside, the bulletin lists a Cortex A9 CPU, 4 Gbit (512 MB) of flash, 4 Gbit (512 MB) of RAM and a 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet port. The guide adds a dedicated console port for local administration. The EDS3000PS is integrated with the Percepxion cloud platform, and it also works with the Windows Lantronix Provisioning Manager, a Cisco-style command line and the Com Port Redirector software.

The bulletin lists two order codes: EDS3008PS1NS (8 ports) and EDS3016PS1NS (16 ports), both with a gigabit Ethernet port, a 100-240 VAC supply and a normal power cord. The EDS3016PS is a taller case (6 cm high, 0.616 kg) but otherwise uses the same platform. A rack-mount sibling, the EDS3000PR, exists in 8, 16 and 32 port versions according to the user guide; it is a different order code and is not covered here.

Accessories are RJ45 to DB9 and DB25 adapters for DTE and DCE equipment (ACC-200.2066A, 2067A, 2069A, 2070A, 2071, 2072, 2073 and 2074), the ACC-500-153 RJ45 loopback adapter, the ADP010104-01 rolled serial adapter and RJ45 patch cables of 2, 5, 10 and 15 m. Installation and day-to-day operation

Power the unit from a 100-240 VAC outlet through the IEC cord, connect the Ethernet cable to the gigabit port, and attach each serial device with a suitable RJ45 cable or adapter. The back-panel LEDs show Ethernet speed (green on for 1000 Mbps) and activity. A reset button next to the power connector reboots the unit when pressed for two to three seconds and ends all serial and Ethernet activity, so use it only during a maintenance window.

The user guide documents default server ports: TCP 22 for SSH, TCP 23 for Telnet, TCP 80 and 443 for the web manager, UDP 161 for SNMP, TCP 21 for FTP, UDP 69 for TFTP, UDP 514 for syslog, UDP 30718 for the Lantronix Discovery Protocol and TCP/UDP 10001 upwards for the tunnels. Set a unique IP address with Provisioning Manager, the web manager, the CLI or an XML record, then create a tunnel for each serial line. SSH and SSL protect the serial data across public or shared networks, and the Secure Com Port Redirector can encrypt COM port traffic from a PC.

Where it is used

The guide lists ATM machines, data display devices, security alarms and access control, modems, time and attendance terminals, patient monitoring, medical instrumentation, industrial manufacturing and automation systems, building automation equipment and point-of-sale systems as applications. In an Oman plant or commercial building this typically means a small comms room, a security control point or a laboratory where a handful of serial devices must be managed remotely. Check the 0 to 55 C operating range for the room, because the case is office-grade plastic rather than a rack-mount industrial chassis.
