Lantronix ED2100002-01 EDS2100 Two-Port Secure Device Server

Description

Two serial ports on the network from one compact, -40 to 85 C unit

The Lantronix ED2100002-01 is the EDS2100, a two-port secure device server that connects two serial devices to an Ethernet network. The order code covers the unit with the Evolution OS firmware and a 100-240 VAC international power supply with regional adapters. Each of the two DB9 male (DTE) ports can be set in software to RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 with 2- or 4-wire operation, which allows PLCs, meters, analysers, drives and legacy terminals to be reached over IP without replacing them.

The EDS family is described in the guide as a hybrid Ethernet terminal and multi-port device server. It runs on a Lantronix FX 32-bit microprocessor at a 166 MHz internal bus and 83 MHz external bus with 8 MB of flash and 8 MB of SDRAM, and it operates across an extended range of -40 to +85 C. Security, management and tunneling are built into the firmware, so the unit can sit in a field cabinet or a control-room rack shelf next to the equipment it serves.

Choosing between the EDS1100 and EDS2100 order codes

The product bulletin lists four codes: ED1100002-01 (one port, Evolution OS), ED1100002-LNX-01 (one port, Linux), ED2100002-01 (two ports, Evolution OS) and ED2100002-LNX-01 (two ports, Linux). All include the international power supply. ED2100002-01 is the two-port Evolution OS unit, so it suits projects that need a ready-made secure serial tunnel rather than custom Linux code. The single-port EDS1100 has a DB25 female DCE connector instead of the EDS2100 pair of DB9 male DTE connectors.

Listed accessories are the ACDIN2001-01 DIN-rail bracket for the EDS2100, the ACDIN1001-01 bracket for the EDS1100, the 500-163-R DB25M to DB9F serial cable, the 500-164-R DB9F to DB9F null modem cable and an ACC-520-0182-00 wall-cube power supply. The package already includes a DB9F-to-DB9F null modem cable, the power cube and a cord restraint. See the industrial communications category for other device servers.

Installation and operation notes from the user guide

Wire each serial device with a cable that ends in a female DB9: a null modem cable to another DTE, or a straight-through cable to a DCE. The unit needs a regulated 9-30 VDC input, which the supplied power cube provides. The Ethernet RJ45 has two LEDs: the left shows 100 Mbps link or activity in green and 10 Mbps in orange, and the right shows full duplex in green. Six top LEDs show power and per-port transmit and receive activity, while a diagnostic LED blinks 1, 2, 4 or 5 times per second to show booting, writing a file to flash, compacting the file system or restoring factory defaults.

A recessed reset button restores factory defaults when pressed for at least three seconds with a paper clip, clearing the IP address, gateway and netmask to zeros. Remember that this erases network settings, so keep the configuration record. Because the guide lists ATM machines, security alarms, access control, patient monitoring, medical instrumentation, manufacturing automation, building automation and point-of-sale systems as typical hosts, the same unit can serve a plant, a building services room or a retail site.

Practical use in hot, remote locations

The -40 to 85 C rating and 9-30 VDC input make the EDS2100 a reasonable fit for panels where only a DC supply is available, such as solar or battery-backed telemetry cabinets, but IP30 means the case is not dust or splash protected and must be installed inside an enclosure. Use SSH or HTTPS rather than Telnet and HTTP on routed networks. For serial applications that must keep a Windows COM port, the Com Port Redirector software maps the remote port to a virtual port without changing the application.
