Brand:

Hatz fiPMG Flywheel-Integrated Permanent Magnet Generator

Description

A generator built into the flywheel of a small diesel engine

The Hatz fiPMG is a flywheel-integrated permanent magnet generator, fitted to the Hatz 1B30E and 1B50E single-cylinder diesel engines. It can work as an onboard DC battery charger in hybrid and battery-electric machines, as an AC generator for power outage backup or continuous supply, or as a range extender. Because the rotor sits in the flywheel, Hatz states that compared with a conventional flange-mounted generator the fiPMG saves about 85 percent of the weight and almost 90 percent of the installation space: the design is 315 mm shorter and 17 kg lighter, with a contactless generator efficiency above 85 percent.

The engine runs at a speed that depends on the load, using the Hatz E1 electronic injection, which lowers noise, emissions and wear. The main power take-off shaft remains free, so a hydraulic pump can still be flange-mounted with four screws. The brochure also notes dual certification, EU Stage V and US Tier 4 final across the whole speed range, and CAN connectivity to a machine battery management system.

Applications named in the brochure

Hatz lists mobile lighting towers, solar and conventional mobile road signs, mobile communications infrastructure, electric lifting equipment, agricultural field robots, trade show trailers, range extenders for fully battery-driven equipment and auxiliary power in construction machinery. It describes a 28 V DC, 100 A charger for large cranes so the main engine does not idle, and a 56 V DC variant for telecommunications masts. Compared with conventional technology, hybrid operation is said to save up to 40 percent fuel.

The charger is controlled over CAN bus or a digital input, with a double CAN inverter for two-way communication with a battery management system; an example configuration with a Victron Cerbo GX is shown. The generator output and charging adapt to altitude and ambient temperature.

What to confirm before ordering

Decide first between the DC battery charger, the AC generator (230 V at 50 Hz or 120 V at 60 Hz) and the Silent Pack enclosures, then the engine base (1B30E or 1B50E, horizontal or vertical shaft) and the OEM kit or finished unit form. Check voltage and current against your battery system, the available installation space and weight, the noise limit, the control interface (CAN or digital input) and the emission certificate. Fuel consumption is quoted only at three-quarter load, so site load profile needs checking with the manufacturer.

About brand

Hatz is a German maker of diesel engines, founded in 1880 by Mathias Hatz as a repair business for agricultural machines and locomotives in Ruhstorf an der Rott, Lower Bavaria. It began building engines in 1904 and became known for compact air-cooled diesel engines. Hatz is still family-run and employs more than 900 people.

Milestones

  • 1880: Mathias Hatz starts the business.
  • 1904: Hatz begins building engines.

Hatz product series

Air-cooled engines include the B-Series 1B30 and the D-Series 1D90 single-cylinder diesels. Liquid-cooled engines include the F-Series 3F45 with open power unit and the H-Series 4H50TIC common-rail diesel.

The fiPMG is a flywheel-integrated permanent magnet generator for power generation.

Air-cooled engines need no radiator or coolant and suit hot, dusty and remote sites, while liquid-cooled engines give lower noise and higher power. Engines are selected by power at the operating speed, drive arrangement and emission requirements.

Open power units include the engine with cooling and controls ready to fit to the driven machine.

Where Hatz engines are used

Pumps, compressors, generators, lighting towers, construction and agricultural machines.

FAQ

Questions about the Hatz fiPMG Flywheel-Integrated Permanent Magnet

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What is a fiPMG?
A flywheel-integrated permanent magnet generator: the generator rotor is built into the engine flywheel, so the unit is much shorter and lighter than an engine with a flange-mounted generator.
02Which engines carry the fiPMG?
The Hatz 1B30E (horizontal shaft, also 1B30VE vertical) and 1B50E single-cylinder diesel engines, as listed in the brochure.
03Does the fiPMG supply DC or AC?
Both versions exist. The battery charger kits deliver 28 V or 56 V DC, and the AC kits and Silent Packs deliver 230 V at 50 Hz or 120 V at 60 Hz.
04How does it control the engine speed?
With E1 electronic injection the engine speed follows the load between 1800 and 3100 rpm on the variable-speed kits, which the brochure says reduces noise, emissions and wear.
05Can I still fit a hydraulic pump?
Yes. The main power take-off shaft remains available, so the brochure says a pump can be flange-mounted with just four screws.
