Perkins 2806A-E18TAG ElectropaK Diesel Engine

Description

Overview

The Perkins 2806A-E18TAG belongs to the Perkins 2800 Series, a family of six-cylinder, 18 litre in-line diesel engines developed for the power generation industry from a heavy-duty industrial core. The 2806A products use dual turbochargers to deliver high power density, and Perkins positions them for both regulated and fuel optimised markets. The range covers the TAG1A, TAG2 and TAG3 ratings and the higher-output TTAG4 to TTAG7 versions, giving generator outputs from 600 kVA prime up to 938 kVA standby from a single Perkins 2806A-E18TAG engine core.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Perkins 2806A-E18TAG, together with filters, service kits and spares, to generator set builders, rental companies, EPC contractors and asset owners in Oman and the GCC. Our team in Muscat helps match the rating to the load study and frequency, and we provide sourcing and model selection support for projects throughout the Sultanate.

Working Principle

The Perkins 2806A-E18TAG is a four-stroke, direct injection diesel engine. Intake air is compressed by two turbochargers working in parallel and then passed through an air-to-air charge cooler before entering the cylinders. Cooler, denser air allows a larger fuel charge per stroke, which is how an 18.1 litre block reaches outputs above 700 kWm at 1500 rpm. Perkins notes that the dual turbochargers also give competitive performance at high altitudes.

Fuel is metered by mechanically operated unit injectors with electronic control. Combined with carefully matched turbocharging, Perkins states that this results in low fuel consumption under all conditions. The electronic control also contributes to low emissions, and the high compression ratios give good cold starting. As a general engineering point, constant-speed generator engines with electronic governing hold frequency closely during load steps, which is important for sensitive loads such as UPS systems and variable speed drives.

Engineering Design of the Perkins 2806A-E18TAG

Every Perkins 2806A-E18TAG rating shares six vertical in-line cylinders with a 145 mm bore and 183 mm stroke for 18.1 litres of displacement. The TAG1A, TAG2 and TAG3 ratings use a 14.5:1 compression ratio with 62 litres of lubricating oil and 61 litres of coolant, while the TTAG4 to TTAG7 ratings use 14:1, 68 litres of oil and 110 litres of coolant. Rotation is anti-clockwise viewed on the flywheel and no exhaust aftertreatment is required.

The ElectropaK package includes the radiator, engine-mounted fuel filter, water separator, fuel priming pump, fuel cooler, air filter, engine-mounted ECM, wiring harness to the ECM, starter motor, battery charging alternator, flywheel housing, flywheel, fan and fan guard, with configurable temperature and oil pressure shutdown or alarm. Perkins highlights the exceptional power-to-weight ratio and compact size, which ease installation, allow a smaller canopy and reduce transport cost compared with larger engines. A common engine core keeps mounting locations the same across ratings, which simplifies canopy design for packagers serving several markets.

Key Features

Packagers and plant engineers choose the Perkins 2806A-E18TAG for the following reasons.

  • Parallel twin turbocharging with air-to-air charge cooling gives high power density from an 18.1 litre six-cylinder block.
  • Seven ratings cover typical generator outputs from 600 kVA prime to 938 kVA standby, at 1500 or 1800 rpm.
  • Mechanically actuated, electronically controlled unit injectors deliver low fuel consumption across the load range.
  • High compression ratios support reliable cold starting and low emissions.
  • A compact footprint and favourable power-to-weight ratio allow smaller enclosures and lower transport cost.
  • Common mounting positions across the range simplify canopy and base frame design.
  • Long service intervals from the robust design help reduce maintenance cost.
  • The engine is capable of meeting the requirements of TA Luft (1986), according to the Perkins sheet.

Industrial Applications

With outputs in the 600 to 940 kVA class, the Perkins 2806A-E18TAG is suited to standby power for large commercial buildings, hospitals, airports, shopping malls and data centres, and to prime power for remote industrial sites, mining operations, oil and gas camps and island or off-grid communities. Its compact size makes it attractive for containerised rental sets, which are widely used in Oman for construction projects and seasonal peak support. In hot regions such as the GCC, the cooling package and site derating should be checked carefully against the rated ambient conditions.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Perkins 2806A-E18TAG to customers in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm, Salalah and across the GCC, both as new ElectropaK engines for genset assembly and as replacement engines for existing sets. We also supply consumables and support service teams from our office in Muscat. For other output levels see the Perkins 1106A-70TAG, the Perkins 2506C-E15TAG2 diesel engine and the complete Cummins C1000D5B 1000 kVA generator set.

Selecting a Rating

Perkins defines prime power as power available at variable load in lieu of a main power network, with a 10 percent overload permitted for one hour in every 12 hours of operation, and standby (maximum) power as power available at variable load in the event of a main power network failure with no overload permitted. When choosing a Perkins 2806A-E18TAG suffix, engineers normally start from the largest expected load, motor starting steps and the duty type, then confirm the cooling pack and site derating. Prime fuel consumption figures on the sheet, for example 202 g/kWh at 100 percent load for the TAG2 at 1500 rpm, are useful for estimating fuel logistics on remote sites.

About brand

Generator set builders around the world specify Perkins engines, and the ElectropaK name on a nameplate tells you the engine left the factory with its radiator and cooling group. Perkins has made diesel engines in Peterborough, United Kingdom, since 1932. Seven Star LLC lists Perkins diesel engines for power generation and supplies Perkins engines and engine parts to genset owners and packagers in Oman as an independent supplier.

Perkins engines listed on this page

Two electric power engines are listed. The 1106A-70TAG is a six-cylinder, 7 liter engine from the 1100 Series, turbocharged and aftercooled, from the ElectropaK range. The 2506C-E15TAG2 is a 15 liter electronic engine from the 2500 Series for larger standby and prime power sets. Perkins also builds smaller 400 Series engines and the large 4000 Series, including gas engines.

Ordering Perkins engines and parts: what we need

For parts, the engine number on the data plate is essential. It contains the build list and serial number that define the exact parts list. For a complete engine, send the model, the rating in kVA or kWm, 50 or 60 Hz speed, standby or prime duty, emissions requirement and scope of supply. GCC site conditions such as ambient temperature should be stated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What generator sizes does the Perkins 2806A-E18TAG cover?
Across the TAG1A to TTAG7 ratings, Perkins lists typical generator outputs from 600 kVA prime up to 938 kVA standby, at 1500 or 1800 rpm.
