DEUTZ TCD 2.2 L3 Diesel Engine
Overview
The DEUTZ TCD 2.2 is a three-cylinder diesel engine from DEUTZ AG that gives the smallest machines a modern common rail powertrain. With a displacement of 2.2 litres it is offered in three aspiration levels, the naturally aspirated D 2.2, the turbocharged TD 2.2 and the turbocharged and charge-air-cooled TCD 2.2, covering outputs from 18.4 kW to 55.4 kW according to ISO 14396. The top version produces a maximum torque of 280 Nm at 1600 rpm, which is a considerable figure for an engine that weighs only 238 kg.
Seven Star LLC supplies the DEUTZ TCD 2.2 to machine builders, rental fleets and maintenance teams in Oman and throughout the GCC, with supply coordination and engineering support in Muscat. Our team reads the DEUTZ datasheet with the customer so that the right aspiration level, emission package and accessories are chosen before the order is placed, which avoids rework on small machines where every millimetre of engine bay counts.
Operating Principle of the DEUTZ TCD 2.2
All versions of the DEUTZ TCD 2.2 are water-cooled, four-stroke diesels with cooled external exhaust gas recirculation. A common rail injection system builds fuel pressure separately from the engine crank angle, so the electronic control can time several injections per cycle and match them to the load. DEUTZ states that this combination of a highly efficient combustion process and common rail injection delivers optimum engine performance at low fuel consumption.
The three aspiration levels change how much air the cylinders receive. The D 2.2 breathes naturally, the TD 2.2 adds a turbocharger and the DEUTZ TCD 2.2 cools the compressed air in a charge air cooler before it enters the engine. Denser air allows more fuel to be burned per stroke, which raises both power and torque without increasing displacement. In practical terms an operator gets higher output from a smaller and lighter engine, and the engine responds faster when a hydraulic pump or implement suddenly asks for power.
Engineering Design
The DEUTZ TCD 2.2 engine page lists a bore of 92 mm and a stroke of 110 mm for the family, and the datasheet gives the following data. The maximum nominal speed is 2600 rpm and the minimum idling speed is 900 rpm. The D 2.2 weighs 228 kg and the TD 2.2 and TCD 2.2 weigh 238 kg according to DIN 70020 Part 7A. Dimension A is 576 mm for the D 2.2 and the TCD 2.2, and the exhaust aftertreatment of the TCD version is shown with a diameter of 199 mm and a length of 506 mm.
The design reuses the installation approach of the larger TCD 2.9 and the G 2.2 and G 2.9 LPG engines, so a machine builder can plan a single chassis for diesel and gas power. DEUTZ describes a modular exhaust aftertreatment configuration that can be mounted on the engine, which it calls virtually a drop-in solution. Service is simplified by oil change intervals of up to 1000 hours, a maintenance-free valve train and an optional multi-V belt drive, while power take-off is available at 100 percent at the flywheel and front end plus a side drive of up to 120 Nm for hydraulic pumps.
Key Features
The manufacturer lists the following characteristics for the DEUTZ TCD 2.2 family.
- Three-cylinder layout with 2.2 litres displacement and power ratings from 18.4 kW to 55.4 kW.
- Maximum torque of 125 Nm, 205 Nm or 280 Nm depending on the D, TD or TCD version.
- Common rail injection with cooled external exhaust gas recirculation.
- EU Stage V and US Tier 4 compliance, with CN IV ready and HVO ready status.
- Oxidation catalyst for maintenance-free operation under Tier 4, and a particulate filter for Stage V.
- Agricultural and emission-downgrade versions without aftertreatment, listed for Stage IIIA.
- Similar footprint and installation interfaces as the TCD 2.9 and G 2.2 and G 2.9 engines.
- Modular, compact power pack that is ready for installation.
Industrial Applications
A three-cylinder engine in this output range is typically specified for compact equipment, and in Oman the DEUTZ TCD 2.2 is relevant to mini excavators, skid steer loaders, small tractors and towable light towers, as well as to pumps and compressors used on construction sites in Muscat and Salalah. The short DEUTZ TCD 2.2 block and its strong low-speed torque help small machines work in confined trenches and yards, while the low weight keeps fuel use down. A fleet owner that already runs the DEUTZ TCD 2.9 L4 diesel engine can use the DEUTZ TCD 2.2 as a lighter step below it in the same technology family.
Seven Star LLC supplies the DEUTZ TCD 2.2 next to related engines and generating equipment. Buyers comparing sizes can review the DEUTZ TCD 3.6 L4 diesel engine, and customers who want a complete small set rather than a bare engine can look at the ADE AP15D5 15 kVA silent diesel generator. Final suitability of an engine for a particular machine should always be checked with the DEUTZ documentation.
Choosing Between D, TD and TCD
The three versions of the DEUTZ TCD 2.2 family differ mainly in torque and output. The naturally aspirated D 2.2 at 18.4 kW and 125 Nm suits light, steady duties, the TD 2.2 at 26 to 44.5 kW and 205 Nm covers general light equipment, and the TCD 2.2 at 45 to 55.4 kW and 280 Nm is the choice when a machine must start under load or lift heavy implements. Because the turbocharged versions share weight and installation dimensions, a builder can move to a higher rating later without redesigning the frame. For the DEUTZ TCD 2.2, also confirm whether the market requires Stage V or whether the Stage IIIA downgrade version is acceptable, since this changes the exhaust module.
