DEUTZ G 2.9 L4 LPG and Gasoline Engine
Overview
The DEUTZ G 2.9 is a water-cooled, four-cylinder spark-ignited engine that DEUTZ AG designed to run on LPG, with versions for gasoline and for bi-fuel operation. It is built on the proven 2.9 litre platform of the TCD 2.9 diesel, which means it shares the same compact footprint and many installation interfaces. The datasheet lists an output of 38.9 to 54 kW depending on the fuel type, a maximum torque of 210 Nm at 1600 rpm and emission compliance to EU Stage V and US EPA Tier 2 with a three-way catalyst.
Seven Star LLC supplies the DEUTZ G 2.9 to equipment builders, fleet operators and service contractors in Oman and across the GCC, with supply coordination and engineering support in Muscat. Gas-fuelled engines are chosen when a machine has to work indoors, in warehouses or near people, and our team helps customers confirm fuel type, emission package and accessories against the manufacturer documentation before an order is placed.
Working Principle of the DEUTZ G 2.9
Unlike a diesel, the DEUTZ G 2.9 burns a premixed charge that is ignited by a spark plug. DEUTZ describes a fully electronically controlled LPG gas system with stoichiometric combustion, closed loop control and knock sensors. Stoichiometric combustion means that the control unit keeps the air and fuel in the exact ratio that the catalyst needs, while the sensors in the exhaust tell the electronics whether the mixture is too rich or too lean so it can correct itself continuously. Knock sensors protect the engine by detecting abnormal combustion and adjusting the ignition timing.
The exhaust is cleaned by a compact three-way catalyst. This kind of catalyst converts carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in one stage, and because it is an open system DEUTZ points out that it supports 100 percent machine availability even at the lowest load duty cycles, unlike particulate filters that need regeneration. The datasheet gives the catalyst dimensions as 136 mm in diameter and 400 mm in length without insulation, and 160 mm by 400 mm with insulation.
Engineering Design
The block of the DEUTZ G 2.9 has four cylinders with a bore of 92 mm and a stroke of 110 mm, giving a displacement of 2.9 litres. The engine is naturally aspirated, with a maximum nominal speed of 2800 rpm and a minimum idling speed of 900 rpm. Weight is 270 kg according to DIN 70020 Part 7A, and the datasheet gives the basic engine dimensions A, B and C as 678 mm, 572 mm and 734 mm.
Because the engine has the same footprint and major installation interfaces as the diesel TCD 2.2 and TCD 2.9 engines, a machine builder can offer one chassis with either a diesel or a gas power source. DEUTZ also lists up to 1000 hours between oil changes, a maintenance-free valve train and an optional service-friendly multi-V belt drive, as well as 100 percent power take-off at the flywheel and front end plus a side PTO drive of up to 120 Nm for hydraulic pumps.
Key Features
These are the main points that DEUTZ highlights for the DEUTZ G 2.9 engine.
- Newly designed four-cylinder spark-ignited engine with a displacement of 2.9 litres.
- Output of up to 54 kW and a maximum torque of 210 Nm at 1600 rpm.
- Operation on LPG in mono-fuel or bi-fuel mode, and on gasoline in mono-fuel or bi-fuel mode.
- Electronically controlled gas system with closed loop control and knock sensors.
- Compact three-way catalyst for EU Stage V and US EPA Tier 2 compliance.
- Same footprint and key installation interfaces as the TCD 2.2 and TCD 2.9 diesel engines.
- Oil change interval of up to 1000 hours and a maintenance-free valve train.
- Side PTO drive of up to 120 Nm in addition to full power take-off at flywheel and front end.
Industrial Applications
LPG engines suit equipment that works in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces, because the exhaust of a catalyst-equipped gas engine is cleaner than that of an unfiltered diesel. In Oman the DEUTZ G 2.9 is a natural option for forklift trucks and material handling equipment in logistics centres at Sohar and Salalah, floor-cleaning machines, aerial work platforms and small generator sets used at hotels, malls and events where the owner wants low noise and low visible smoke. Customers who also run small diesel equipment, for example the ADE AP15D5 15 kVA silent diesel generator, can keep both fuel types on one site and match each machine to its duty.
Seven Star LLC supplies the DEUTZ G 2.9 in the context of a wider power range. A compact engine can be paired with a diesel set such as the Mitropower PM13TA1-3 diesel generator, and the sister diesel engine of the DEUTZ G 2.9, the DEUTZ TCD 2.9 L4 diesel engine, is available when a customer needs the same installation envelope with a diesel. LPG availability at the site and local fuel handling rules should be checked before any gas engine is selected.
Selecting Fuel Type and Emission Package
Choosing the right DEUTZ G 2.9 variant starts with the fuel that the customer can store and supply reliably. The datasheet distinguishes LPG and gasoline engines, each in mono-fuel or bi-fuel form, and the available power depends on the fuel type: roughly 38.9 kW to 54 kW across the range. Next, confirm the emission standard for the destination market, since the Stage V and Tier 2 configuration uses the three-way catalyst while DEUTZ states that variants without exhaust aftertreatment for less regulated markets will be added later. Finally, review the PTO, belt drive and mounting requirements of the machine that will carry the DEUTZ G 2.9.
