Brand:

Perkins 1506A-E88TAG ElectropaK Diesel Engine

Description

Overview

The Perkins 1506A-E88TAG is a six-cylinder, 8.8 litre electric power engine from the Perkins 1500 Series, built for diesel generator sets in the 200 to 390 kVA class. Perkins describes it as a fully electronic, turbocharged, air-to-air aftercooled engine that is economical, quiet and reliable. It is delivered as an ElectropaK, a complete power unit fitted with the radiator pack, the air cleaner and all of the wiring harnesses needed for convenient installation, so a generator set builder only has to add the alternator, base frame, controller and enclosure.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Perkins 1506A-E88TAG, its consumables and its service spares to generator set packagers, contractors, utilities and facility owners across Oman and the GCC. We help customers select the right rating suffix for the required kVA, frequency and duty, and we provide model selection support from Muscat for projects from the capital area to Sohar, Duqm and Salalah.

Working Principle

Like every Perkins electric power engine, the Perkins 1506A-E88TAG is a four-stroke, direct injection compression-ignition engine. Air drawn through the engine-mounted filter is compressed by the turbocharger, cooled in the air-to-air charge cooler and delivered to the cylinders, where fuel is injected near the top of the compression stroke and ignites spontaneously. Cooling the charge air increases its density, which allows more fuel to be burned per cycle and gives the high power density the 1500 Series is designed for, while also helping control combustion temperatures.

Fuel is delivered by a hydraulically actuated electronic unit injection (HEUI) system under the command of the engine-mounted ECM. Perkins notes that this approach makes the engine robust in most regions of the world because it copes with variations in fuel quality. The electronic governing also allows the engine to be switched between 50 Hz/1500 rpm and 60 Hz/1800 rpm, which gives packagers flexibility when building sets for mixed markets. In general engineering terms, electronic control of a constant-speed genset engine improves load acceptance and frequency stability compared with purely mechanical governing.

Engineering Design of the Perkins 1506A-E88TAG

The Perkins 1506A-E88TAG uses six vertical in-line cylinders with a 112 mm bore and 149 mm stroke, giving 8.8 litres of displacement, with a 16.1:1 compression ratio and anti-clockwise rotation viewed from the flywheel. The lubricating system holds 41 litres and the liquid cooling system 30 litres. No exhaust aftertreatment is fitted on these fuel-optimised ratings, which keeps the installation simple for territories without stage-based emission rules.

As standard the ElectropaK includes the fitted radiator, engine-mounted fuel filter and water separator, a manual fuel priming pump, the engine-mounted air filter and ECM, the wiring harness to the ECM, a harness bringing all connectors to a single customer interface, starter motor, battery charging alternator, flywheel housing, flywheel, fan and fan guard. Temperature and oil pressure signals can be configured for automatic stop or alarm. The complete package measures 1366 mm high, 1941 mm long and 1013 mm wide, with a dry weight of 1156 kg.

Key Features

The main reasons generator builders and end users specify the Perkins 1506A-E88TAG are summarised below.

  • An 8.8 litre turbocharged engine with HEUI fuel injection delivers high power density in a compact six-cylinder block.
  • Five rating suffixes, TAG1 to TAG5, cover typical generator outputs from 207 kVA prime up to 389 kVA standby on one Perkins 1506A-E88TAG platform.
  • Switchable 50 Hz/1500 rpm and 60 Hz/1800 rpm operation adds flexibility for frequency selection.
  • The fuel system is designed to tolerate the variation in fuel quality found in different regions of the world.
  • Oil change service intervals are set at 500 hours as standard, which keeps planned maintenance simple.
  • The ElectropaK arrives with radiator, air cleaner and wiring harnesses fitted, shortening generator assembly time.
  • A single customer interface harness brings all engine connections to one point for the genset controller.
  • Configurable stop or alarm on coolant temperature and oil pressure protects the engine during unattended operation.

Industrial Applications

The Perkins 1506A-E88TAG sits in a power band that suits standby and prime power for commercial towers, hospitals, hotels, data rooms, telecom hubs, water pumping stations and medium industrial sites. Its prime ratings make it a practical engine for remote oil and gas camps, construction sites and farms that run on generator power for long periods, while the standby ratings serve buildings that need backup during grid interruptions. In Oman the high summer ambient temperature makes radiator sizing and derating checks important, and the factory-matched radiator pack of the ElectropaK gives packagers a known starting point.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Perkins 1506A-E88TAG to generator assemblers, rental fleets, EPC contractors and maintenance teams in Muscat, the Sohar and Salalah economic zones and the wider GCC. We also support repower projects, where an existing set with a tired engine is upgraded with a current Perkins 1506A-E88TAG of matching output, and we hold provide engineering support in Muscat for filters, belts and other wear parts. Related power products include the smaller Perkins 1106A-70TAG ElectropaK, the larger Perkins 2506C-E15TAG2 diesel engine and the DSE7320 auto mains failure generator controller.

Rating Definitions

Perkins defines prime power as unlimited hours of use with an average load factor of 80 percent of the published prime power over each 24 hour period, with a 10 percent overload available for one hour in every 12 hours of operation. Standby power is limited to 500 hours of annual use with an average load factor of 80 percent of the published standby power, of which up to 300 hours may be run continuously, and no overload is permitted. Choosing the correct suffix of the Perkins 1506A-E88TAG therefore depends on whether the set will back up a grid supply or run as the main source of power. All data is based on operation to ISO 14396/1:2002 standard reference conditions, so site altitude and temperature should be reviewed before the final selection.

About brand

Generator set builders around the world specify Perkins engines, and the ElectropaK name on a nameplate tells you the engine left the factory with its radiator and cooling group. Perkins has made diesel engines in Peterborough, United Kingdom, since 1932. Seven Star LLC lists Perkins diesel engines for power generation and supplies Perkins engines and engine parts to genset owners and packagers in Oman as an independent supplier.

Perkins engines listed on this page

Two electric power engines are listed. The 1106A-70TAG is a six-cylinder, 7 liter engine from the 1100 Series, turbocharged and aftercooled, from the ElectropaK range. The 2506C-E15TAG2 is a 15 liter electronic engine from the 2500 Series for larger standby and prime power sets. Perkins also builds smaller 400 Series engines and the large 4000 Series, including gas engines.

Ordering Perkins engines and parts: what we need

For parts, the engine number on the data plate is essential. It contains the build list and serial number that define the exact parts list. For a complete engine, send the model, the rating in kVA or kWm, 50 or 60 Hz speed, standby or prime duty, emissions requirement and scope of supply. GCC site conditions such as ambient temperature should be stated.
