Cummins QSK60-G4 V16 Diesel Generator Engine

Description

Overview

The Cummins QSK60-G4 is a 16-cylinder, 60.2 litre G-Drive diesel engine from the Cummins Quantum series, built specifically to power large generator sets. At 1500 rpm for 50 Hz it delivers 1915 kWm gross standby, 1730 kWm prime and 1415 kWm base load output, which Cummins equates to a typical generator set output of 2250 kVA standby, 2045 kVA prime and 1650 kVA continuous. On the Cummins Europe rating card, the QSK60-G4 is the engine of the C2250D5 generator set.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Cummins QSK60-G4 to generator set packagers, power plant contractors and end users repowering existing units in Oman and the GCC. Our Muscat engineers help confirm the rating, cooling package and control interface before an order is placed.

Operating Principle

Fuelling on the Cummins QSK60-G4 is handled by the Cummins High Pressure Injection PT (HPI-PT) full-authority electronic fuel system. The system is managed by a G-Drive Governor Control System (GCS) controller that is supplied for off-engine mounting in the generator set control panel. The Quantum control includes a dedicated fuel system board to interface with HPI-PT and provides an engine protection package, giving packagers flexibility in how they design the overall control while keeping the benefits of electronic governing.

Air handling uses Cummins Turbo Technologies HX82/HX83 turbochargers, which recover exhaust energy efficiently for better emissions and fuel consumption. Charge air is cooled by a low temperature aftercooling circuit arranged as two-pump, two-loop (2P2L), separating the jacket water from the aftercooler loop so intake air stays cooler, which is valuable in hot climates where power derating is a concern.

Engineering Design of the Cummins QSK60-G4

The engine is a four-cycle, turbocharged and aftercooled V16 with a cast iron block, a 159 mm bore and a 190 mm stroke. Ferrous cast ductile iron (FCD) pistons give high strength and durability under sustained load. The engine runs on a 24 V starting system with a 55 A charging alternator, uses spin-on fuel filters with a water separator and spin-on full-flow oil filters, and carries 280 litres of lube oil with an SAE 0 flywheel connection.

As a G-Drive product the Cummins QSK60-G4 is supplied with a Coolpac cooling package and air cleaner kit, each developed and tested by Cummins for this engine. The 2P2L cooling system holds 490 litres of coolant, is rated for a 50 °C limiting ambient and needs 44 kWm of fan power with an airflow of 34 m³/s. The complete engine with Coolpac measures about 4979 x 2494 x 3201 mm and weighs 9685 kg dry. The engine is built to comply with CE certification in ISO 9001 certified facilities.

Industrial Applications

In Oman the Cummins QSK60-G4 is used in large standby and prime power plants for hospitals, airports, data centres, desalination facilities and industrial complexes in Sohar and Duqm. Its base load rating of 1415 kWm also suits continuous power stations at remote mining sites and oil and gas facilities where grid connection is not practical, and paralleled QSK60 sets are common in temporary power plants.

Operators replacing an ageing engine inside an existing generator set can use the Cummins QSK60-G4 as a repower option, provided the alternator, coupling and control are reviewed. Sites that also run medium engines such as the Perkins 2506C-E15TAG2 diesel engine benefit from a single source for spares and support. Seven Star LLC supplies the Cummins QSK60-G4 and related service parts throughout Oman and the GCC.

Integration Notes for the Cummins QSK60-G4

Because the GCS governor is mounted off-engine, the generator set panel must be designed to accommodate it and to wire the engine protection signals. Packagers should also plan for the twin cooling loops, a foundation sized for nearly ten tonnes and an exhaust system suited to the airflow of a 60 litre engine. Our engineers can check these interfaces against your drawings.

Rating Definitions for the Cummins QSK60-G4

Cummins defines four duty classes on the specification sheet. Emergency Standby Power applies to a varying load for the duration of a utility interruption, and Limited-Time Running Power covers a constant load for a limited number of hours. Prime Power allows a varying load for unlimited hours with ten percent overload capability, and Base Load or Continuous Power covers a constant load for unlimited hours. These definitions follow ISO 8528 and ISO 3046, and choosing the correct one keeps the engine within its design life.

About brand
Diesel power is the first thing associated with Cummins, founded in 1919 and headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, USA. The company builds engines, complete generator sets and the controls and components around them. Seven Star LLC lists Cummins diesel generator sets, a generator-drive engine and engine and control spare parts, and supplies them to contractors and facility operators in Oman against the model, specification and part numbers on the equipment.

Cummins equipment on this page

The generator sets listed are the C150D5 at 150 kVA, the C275D5 at 275 kVA, a set in the 312/315 kVA class and the C1000D5B at 1000 kVA. In the Cummins naming, the number after C is the nominal kVA rating and D5 marks a diesel set for 50 Hz. The QSK60-G4 is a 16-cylinder engine for generator drive. Spare parts are listed by Cummins part number: head gasket set 4011502, starter motor 3283330, fuel injection pump 3937025 and the PowerCommand display and control assembly 300-6314-01. A generator controller page for auto mains failure duty is also listed.

Where Cummins generator sets are used

Standby power for hospitals, towers, data rooms and pumping stations; prime power on construction camps, remote oilfield sites and quarries; and paralleled sets for larger loads. High ambient temperature and dust are normal design conditions for sets working in the GCC, so cooling package and enclosure choices deserve attention at the inquiry stage.

Ordering Cummins parts: what we need

For engine parts send the engine serial number (ESN) and model from the engine dataplate, together with the part number if you have it. For generator set parts and controls send the genset model, specification letter and serial number from the set nameplate. For a complete set tell us the kVA rating and duty (standby or prime), voltage and frequency, open or enclosed build, the site ambient temperature and altitude, and the transfer switch or paralleling requirement.
