An MEP project in Oman can have several thousand valves: isolation valves on every chiller, pump and coil, balancing valves and PICVs on the chilled water network, gate and check valves in the plumbing system, and alarm, deluge and pressure reducing valves in the fire protection system. Most of them are ordered from a valve schedule written by the consultant, and the submittal has to match that schedule line by line. This guide explains the main valve types used in buildings, the points that cause rejected submittals, and what a contractor should send to a valves supplier in Oman to get an accurate quote quickly.
Valves for Chilled Water and HVAC Systems
District cooling and chiller plants are the heart of most large buildings in Muscat, and their valves run continuously in hot, humid plant rooms. The usual line-up is:
| Valve | Role | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Butterfly valve | Isolation of large pipes at chillers, pumps, headers and risers | Weflo Fig. 2302 wafer, Weflo Fig. 2502 lug, Hattersley Fig. 950, Victaulic Series 761 |
| Double door check valve | Prevents back flow at pump discharge | Weflo Fig. 5306 |
| Y-strainer | Protects pumps, coils and control valves from debris | Weflo Fig. 7101 / 7102 |
| Balancing valve | Sets the design flow in each branch | Weflo Fig. 1209, IMI TA STAD |
| Differential pressure controller | Keeps a stable pressure across a branch or riser | IMI TA STAP, Danfoss AB-PM |
| Pressure independent control valve (PICV) | Controls and limits flow to FCUs and AHUs whatever the system pressure | Danfoss AB-QM, IMI TA-Modulator, Frese OPTIMA Compact, Siemens VPI46 |
| Electronic PICV and energy valve | Measures flow and energy, with BACnet or Modbus to the BMS | Belimo EPIV, Belimo Energy Valve |
PICVs have become the standard for FCU and AHU control in new buildings because they combine balancing and control in one valve and cut commissioning time. FCU valve kits, with isolation valves, strainer, PICV and flexible hoses in one package, are also common. See our pressure independent control valves category for the full PICV range.
Valves for Plumbing and Water Supply
Plumbing systems use smaller valves, mostly bronze or brass in the smaller sizes and cast or ductile iron in the larger ones. Typical items are gate valves for isolation, globe valves for regulation, check valves, ball valves, pressure reducing valves and air release valves.
- Gate valves: Hattersley Fig. C31 bronze gate valve for small bore lines and Hattersley Fig. M511 cast iron flanged gate valve for larger mains.
- Check valves: Hattersley Fig. 1013 bronze horizontal lift check valve and Spirax Sarco DCV1 wafer disc check valve.
- Globe and needle valves: Hattersley Fig. 5N bronze needle globe valve.
- Ball valves: Weflo Fig. 4102 flanged ball valve and Spirax Sarco M10S three-piece ball valve.
- Pressure reducing and control valves for water mains: Cla-Val 90-01 and Cla-Val 92-01.
Many consultants in Oman follow British practice and ask for WRAS approval on valves in contact with drinking water. WRAS approval applies to a specific product, size range and material, not to a whole brand, so state the requirement on the enquiry and ask for the approval certificate with the submittal. The same applies when a specification asks for a UK brand or a named European make: list the names given in the specification so we can quote the exact makes, or an equal-and-approved alternative only if you ask for one.
Valves for Fire Protection
Fire protection valves must carry the approvals required by the specification, usually UL Listing and/or FM Approval. Typical items are alarm check valves, deluge valves, pre-action valves, supervised butterfly valves, pressure reducing valves and air release valves.
- Alarm check valves: Weflo Fig. F1511 UL listed and Viking Model J-1.
- Deluge and pre-action valves: Weflo Fig. 9266, Weflo Fig. 5311 double interlocked pre-action valve and Reliable DDX.
- Supervised butterfly valves: Victaulic FireLock Series 705.
- Pressure reducing and air release valves: Weflo Fig. F1318 UL pressure reducing valve and Weflo Fig. 9701 FM approved air release valve.
For riser outlets, see our separate guide to landing valves in Oman.
Points That Cause Rejected Valve Submittals
- Pressure rating (PN10, PN16, PN25 or Class 150) lower than the system test pressure.
- Wrong end connection: wafer instead of lug, threaded instead of flanged, or flange drilling that does not match the pipework.
- Body, disc or seat materials different from the schedule (for example EPDM seats specified but NBR offered).
- Missing approvals: WRAS for potable water, UL or FM for fire protection.
- Actuators, gearboxes or position switches left out of the quote.
- PICVs offered without checking the flow range and minimum differential pressure against the design.
What to Send for a Valve Quote
- The valve schedule or BOQ, with sizes and quantities.
- Service (chilled water, potable water, drainage, fire) and design pressure and temperature.
- Pressure rating, end connections and flange standard.
- Body, disc and seat materials, as written in the specification.
- Required approvals and any named makes (WRAS, UL, FM, UK or European brands).
- Operators: lever, gearbox or actuator, and any limit switches.
- Project location in Oman and the required delivery date.

Frequently asked questions
Which valves are used in a chilled water system?
A typical chilled water system uses butterfly valves for isolation, double door check valves at pump discharges, Y-strainers, balancing valves, differential pressure controllers and pressure independent control valves (PICVs) for FCUs and AHUs.
What is a PICV and why is it used?
A pressure independent control valve combines a control valve and an automatic flow limiter. It keeps the flow to an FCU or AHU at the set value even when the system pressure changes, which improves comfort and shortens balancing and commissioning.
What does WRAS approved mean?
WRAS approval shows that a product is suitable for contact with drinking water under UK water regulations. It applies to specific products, sizes and materials, so the approval certificate should be checked for each valve offered.
Which approvals do fire protection valves need?
Fire protection valves such as alarm check, deluge and pre-action valves are usually required to be UL Listed and/or FM Approved, as stated in the project specification.
What information do I need to send for a valve quote?
Send the valve schedule or BOQ with sizes and quantities, the service and design pressure, pressure rating, end connections, materials, required approvals or named makes, operator type and the delivery date.
Where can I buy MEP valves in Oman?
