Banner QS18VP6AF300 Background Suppression Sensor 30-300 mm
Description
Mechanically adjustable background suppression to 300 mm
The QS18VP6AF300 is a PNP background suppression (BGS) photoelectric sensor in Banner’s QS18 range. A five-turn screw on the housing sets the cutoff distance anywhere between 30 and 300 mm; anything beyond the cutoff is ignored, so the sensor can pick out a part on a conveyor even when a shiny frame, wall or guard sits a few centimetres behind it.
It is a diffuse-mode device with a visible red 640 nm LED, so the spot can be seen on the target during setup. Banner’s text explains that background suppression works in most situations where object colour, position or the background vary, which is why this style is a common choice for packaging lines, pallet and tray detection and general material handling.

Setting the cutoff
Setup is mechanical rather than teach-in: with the object in position, turn the cutoff screw until the amber LED switches. Because the clutch stops the screw at each end of travel, the adjustment cannot be forced beyond its limits. The datasheet shows performance curves and a configuration example, and it notes that for mirror-like objects the sensor should be mounted as close as practical and tilted so reflected light is directed away from the lens.
Banner points out that the minimum sensing range changes with the cutoff setting, from roughly 4 mm at short cutoffs up to about 10 mm near the top of the range, so very close objects should be checked on the bench before a fixed mounting height is chosen.
Ordering and electrical notes
Standard models carry a 2 m cable. Adding the W/30 suffix gives 9 m, Q gives a 150 mm cable with a 4-pin M8 connector and Q5 a 150 mm cable with a 4-pin M12 connector. QD models need a mating cordset, and mounting brackets are listed in the accessories chapter. The datasheet also prints a required overcurrent protection table by supply wire size, from 5 A for 20 AWG down to 0.5 A for 30 AWG, and states that supply leads smaller than 24 AWG must not be spliced.

About brand
Banner Engineering is the American maker of industrial sensors, indicator lights, wireless monitoring and machine safety products. Bob Fayfield founded it in 1966 as a small engineering firm in the Minneapolis area. The company is privately held and still based in Minnesota.
Seven Star LLC lists Banner devices including the Q4X rugged stainless steel laser distance sensor and the K50 Pro Beacon IO-Link multicolor RGB indicator, and supplies Banner sensors and indicators to plants and machine builders in Oman.

Banner Q4X and K50 Pro
Banner offers the Q4X in four range versions, all starting at 25 mm: Q4X100 to 100 mm, Q4X300 to 300 mm, Q4X500 to 500 mm and Q4X600 to 600 mm. The series is available with discrete, analog and IO-Link outputs and has a display on the sensor. The K50 Pro Beacon is a status indicator whose color and behavior are set from the controller over IO-Link.

Ordering Banner products: what we need
Send the complete Banner model number from the device label, because range, output type and connector are all coded into it. For the Q4X, state the measuring distance, the output your PLC input needs and the connector or cable style. For indicators, give the housing size, control method and voltage. Mating cordsets and brackets can be included for GCC orders.

Frequently Asked Questions
The sensor responds only to objects closer than the cutoff distance and ignores whatever lies beyond it, so a background wall or machine frame does not trigger the output.
The cutoff is adjustable from 30 to 300 mm, with a minimum sensing range of 4 to 10 mm depending on the cutoff setting.
NPN (QS18VN6AF300), PNP (QS18VP6AF300) and bipolar with one NPN and one PNP output (QS18AB6AF300).
The datasheet lists IEC IP67, NEMA 6 and UL Type 1.
With the five-turn adjustment screw on the housing, which is clutched at both ends of its travel.
