SICK GRL18S-P2336 GR18 Cylindrical Retro-Reflective Sensor, M12

Description

GRL18S-P2336 is a SICK GR18 retro-reflective photoelectric sensor (part no. 1058192). Sender and receiver sit in one housing; the beam travels to a reflector and back, and the output changes when an object interrupts it. The sensing range maximum is 0.03 m … 7.2 m (sensing range value 0.06 m … 6 m). Output: PNP, light switching; connection: Connector M12, 3-pin.

Retro-reflective sensing with the GRL18S-P2336

The data sheet describes a dual-lens system with a minimum distance to the reflector. Place the reflector beyond that minimum distance; closer than that the beam geometry no longer works as intended, and the sensing range figures only apply from there outwards. A polarisation filter is fitted: it passes only light that the reflector has rotated, so shiny objects are less likely to be mistaken for the reflector. Range figures are quoted against a reference reflector. A smaller or dirty reflector gives less operating reserve, so leave margin instead of using the full range. Where a polarisation filter is fitted, glossy objects that return the beam unrotated are not mistaken for the reflector. Without a filter a shiny object can defeat the sensor.

Light source: PinPoint LED, visible red light, light spot Ø 175 mm (7 m). Adjustment: none. Response time < 500 µs, switching frequency 1,000 Hz.

Type code GRL18S-P2336 and part number 1058192

The type code starts with the family (GRL18S) and carries housing and option digits; it does not replace the part number. Use 1058192 to identify exactly this version, because sibling versions with another connection, output or range have different numbers. Remember the reflector is a separate item unless the specification table lists one as supplied.

Versions SICK lists next to this one, all with separate part numbers:

  • GRL18S-P233Y (part no. 1058207)
  • GRL18S-P233W (part no. 1058210)
  • GRL18S-P235Y (part no. 1064160)
  • GRL18S-P235W (part no. 1064162)
  • GRL18S-P2331 (part no. 1058199)

Mounting, wiring and alignment notes

Wire it to a supply of 10 V DC … 30 V DC. Protection is IP67, and the permitted ambient range in operation is –25 °C … +55 °C. The body measures 18 mm x 18 mm x 38.1 mm. Supplied with it: Fastening nuts (2 x). Check PNP/NPN and light/dark switching against the controller input before you mount the sensor.

About brand

Machine builders have relied on SICK since 1946 for the sensors that tell a controller where a part, a pallet or a person is. The company, based in Waldkirch, Germany, makes photoelectric, inductive and magnetic sensors, distance sensors and safety devices. Seven Star LLC supplies SICK sensors to maintenance teams and integrators in Oman, mostly as exact replacements identified by type code and part number.

SICK sensor families on this page

Five of the SICK families listed here are described below. The W4 miniature photoelectric sensors include the WTB4-3, a proximity sensor with background suppression. IME is the standard inductive proximity line, and the IME18 is the M18 housing size. RZT7 cylinder sensors fit T-slot pneumatic cylinders and detect the piston magnet. The DT35 belongs to the Dx35 laser distance sensors for mid-range measurement. The microScan3 is a safety laser scanner that guards hazardous zones around machines and vehicles.

Where SICK sensors are used

SICK sensors are fitted on packaging and bottling lines, conveyors, palletizers, warehouse cranes and automated guided vehicles. Safety laser scanners protect robot cells and transfer cars. In process plants, the same proximity and cylinder sensors report valve and damper positions on packaged equipment.

Ordering SICK sensors: what we need

A SICK type code such as IME18-08NPSZW2K packs the whole specification into one string: housing size, sensing range, flush or non-flush mounting, output type and connection. Each variant also has a 7-digit part number, and that number is the safest identifier. Please send:

  • Type code and part number from the sensor label, or a photo of it
  • Output type (PNP or NPN, normally open or closed) and connection (cable length or M8/M12 plug)
  • For microScan3: variant (Core or Pro), interface, protective field range, plus system plug and bracket

We check the code in SICK's documentation and tell you if the manufacturer lists a successor.
