ABB ACS550-01-059A-4 ACS550 30 kW Frame R4 AC Drive
Description
A 30 kW standard drive: ABB ACS550-01-059A-4
Rated 59 A, the ABB ACS550-01-059A-4 turns a 380 to 480 V supply into variable-frequency output for a 30 kW motor. It is a frame R4 drive from the ACS550-01 series.
Typical applications are pumps, fans and constant-torque machines such as conveyors, where adjustable speed and simple commissioning matter more than special product engineering.

Duty ratings and supply
Heavy-duty current is 44 A (22 kW) and normal-use current is 59 A (30 kW) (40 hp in NEMA terms). Input current at rated output is about 59 A, which is the figure for sizing cables and fuses.
ABB lists vector control, a swinging choke for harmonic reduction, a built-in category C2 EMC filter, built-in Modbus on EIA-485, coated boards and the FlashDrop parameter tool as highlights of the ACS550 series.
Plan for a 24 kg drive that is 203 mm wide. The connection box raises its height to 689 mm, and depth is 262 mm. IP54 units are larger at 760 x 257 x 284 mm.
Cooling data: 907 W heat dissipation at full load, 280 m3/h of air and 75 dB sound level. Fusing is 63 A gG for IEC installations or 80 A UL class T. No brake chopper is built into frame R4; ABB offers external brake units for dynamic braking.
Installation conditions are a clean, dry, heated location with cooling air free of corrosive material and conductive dust. Maximum ambient is 40 C, or 50 C with 90% derating, and a free space of 200 mm is kept above and below the unit.
Reading the ACS550-01-059A-4 order code
Reading the order code: ACS550 (series), 01 (construction), 059A (current rating), 4 (voltage). Typical extras are +B055 for IP54 and +K466 for the Ethernet adapter RETA-01. Without plus codes the drive is the standard IP21 unit.
Please include the planned installation altitude, the ambient temperature range and the type of enclosure or cabinet in your request, so that derating and cooling can be checked against the manufacturer’s data before a quotation is issued.
Drives of this series often serve fans, pumps and conveyors in older plants. If yours is one of them, note the original motor cable length and screen arrangement, because replacing a drive is easiest when the wiring, filter and panel match what is already installed. Tell us the nameplate current as well, so the quoted size follows the load.
Selection checks for a 30 kW ACS550 application
Size the drive from the motor nameplate current and the type of load rather than from kilowatts alone. Centrifugal pumps and fans normally fit the normal-use rating, while conveyors, mixers and other machines that need high starting torque or frequent overloads should be checked against the heavy-duty rating, which for this type code covers a smaller motor. Confirm the supply voltage and earthing system on site: the built-in category C2 EMC filter is intended for earthed networks, and the ABB manual should be followed if the drive is to be connected to an IT (unearthed) or corner-earthed supply. If the load can overhaul the motor or needs quick stopping, plan for the external braking arrangement mentioned above, since frame R4 has no brake chopper inside.
Installation and wiring practice
Fix the drive vertically on a solid wall or panel back plate with the clearances given above, so that cooling air can pass from bottom to top without recirculating. If several drives or other heat sources share an enclosure, add up the heat losses and check that the cabinet ventilation can remove them. Use screened motor cable with the screen bonded at both ends as described in the ABB manual, keep motor and control cables in separate routes, and install the specified input fuses. Check the motor insulation before connecting it to a drive, particularly on older motors that previously ran direct on line.
Commissioning steps
Enter the motor nameplate data, choose the application macro closest to the duty and set acceleration, deceleration, minimum and maximum speed to suit the process. Where the drive is controlled over the built-in Modbus link, agree the register map and communication settings with the control system integrator and test start, stop, speed reference and fault reset from the controller. Run the motor first without load where possible, check the direction of rotation, then load the machine and watch current and temperature. Save the final parameter set; the FlashDrop tool listed for this series can help copy settings to a replacement drive.
Heat, dust and humidity in Oman and the GCC
The ACS550 is meant for a clean, dry location, and the maximum ambient stated above is easily exceeded in an unventilated pump house or rooftop plant room during a Gulf summer. Where the room or cabinet runs hotter, plan for air conditioning or ventilation, or apply the derating from the ABB documentation. Fine sand and conductive dust are a risk to any drive, so filtered cooling air and sealed cabinets are advisable; the IP54 option is worth discussing for dusty rooms. On coastal sites, salty humid air and condensation during cool nights call for a heated or conditioned enclosure. Routine maintenance should include cleaning the cooling path, checking that cooling air flows freely, tightening power terminals and reviewing the fault history.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
ABB product families on this page
Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.
Where ABB instruments and drives are used
Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.
Ordering ABB parts: what we need
For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
