Description

A compact VLA1 drive rated 0.75 kW and 4.2 A

Lovato Electric’s VLA107A240 belongs to the VLA1 series. As a variable speed drive it takes a single-phase supply (200-240VAC 50/60Hz) and delivers 4.2 A at 0.75 kW (1 HP) to a three-phase motor, with an output frequency of 0-599 Hz.

Radio-frequency interference is handled by the built-in EMC suppressor cat. C2 inside the housing, and the serial port is None.

Overload capacity is 150% for 60s, 200% for 3s, with a switching frequency of 2-16kHz.

Matching the drive to the motor

Size the drive on motor current rather than kilowatts. The VLA107A240 supplies 4.2 A continuously; the datasheet gives an input current of 10 A without a mains choke, useful when checking breaker and cable sizes.

Control modes listed: V/f linear, quadratic torque, sensorless vector control, ECO mode.

A brake chopper is not fitted and the safe-torque-off function is not provided.

Where it fits and how to install it

Typical uses are pumps and fans where a PID loop holds pressure or flow, conveyors and mixers, and small machine tools needing adjustable speed. Because the permitted motor cable length depends on the EMC category chosen, check the cable table in the datasheet when the motor is far from the panel.

Mechanical data: 60 x 208 x 130 mm, 0.95 Kg, IP20. Fit it vertically, leave room for cooling, and run the motor cable in screened cable bonded at both ends to meet the EMC category claimed.

Commissioning the VLA107A240 on a pump or fan

Before applying power, confirm that the supply is single-phase within the operating mains range and that the motor is connected for the drive’s three-phase output voltage, which on a dual-voltage motor normally means the lower-voltage connection. Enter the motor nameplate values first, then choose the control mode: quadratic torque or ECO mode for centrifugal pumps and fans, V/f linear or sensorless vector for conveyors and mixers. Set acceleration and deceleration ramps that the mechanics can tolerate, remembering that without a brake chopper a fast stop on a high-inertia load can trip the drive on overvoltage.

For pressure or flow control, wire the transmitter to an analog input, scale it in the PID menu, and tune the loop slowly, starting with gentle gains. Test the sleep function at low demand and check that the pump restarts cleanly when pressure falls. Save the final settings in one of the parameter configuration sets so they can be restored after a change.

Heat, dust and humidity in Oman and GCC installations

The datasheet requires current derating above 40 °C and sets a maximum operating temperature, both of which matter in Omani pump rooms and rooftop plant areas during summer. Place the IP20 drive in an enclosure that keeps it within those limits, with ventilation or cooling sized for the hottest season. Sand and dust block heat sinks and fan filters quickly, so plan regular cleaning. The relative humidity limit excludes condensation; in coastal sites or air-conditioned panels where moisture can form, an anti-condensation heater or careful control of the cooling cycle helps protect the electronics.

Routine maintenance

With the drive isolated and its internal capacitors discharged, inspect the terminals for tightness and signs of overheating, clean dust from the cooling path, and check the screened motor cable clamps. Read the alarm history to see whether trips such as overcurrent, undervoltage or phase loss repeat, and trace the cause in the supply or the load before resetting.

Lovato order codes describe the product. On a contactor such as BF0910A230, "BF09" is the frame and rated current (9 A in AC-3), "10" is the built-in auxiliary contact (one normally open), "A" means an AC coil and "230" is the coil voltage. The coil voltage must match the control circuit exactly, so it is the most common detail to check when replacing one. For motors, a soft starter limits the inrush current at start and stop, while a variable speed drive controls the speed continuously and saves energy on pumps and fans that do not need full flow all the time.

Where Lovato products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Lovato components are built into motor control centres, pump and HVAC panels, capacitor banks for power factor correction, generator and ATS panels, and machine control panels for industry, water and buildings.
