ABB FSCA-01 RS-485 Modbus RTU Adapter Module for ABB Drives
Description
Modbus RTU serial adapter for ABB drives
The FSCA-01 is a serial fieldbus adapter that gives ABB drives an isolated RS-485 interface for Modbus RTU. It suits older PLCs, energy meters, BMS gateways and any panel where simple two-wire serial communication is enough.
The manual’s compatibility list includes ACS355, ACH580, ACQ580, ACS580 and ACS880 among other families, which makes the same module useful across a mixed fleet.
Technical specifications
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Type designation | FSCA-01 |
| Function | RS-485 serial adapter, Modbus RTU |
| Connector | 4-pin screw terminal |
| Termination | Built-in 120 ohm, jumper selected |
| Data rates | 9.6 to 115.2 kbit/s |
| Isolation | Galvanically isolated |
| Supply from drive | +3.3 V, max 400 mA |
| Drive families (manual) | ACS355, ACH580, ACQ580, ACS580, ACS880 and others |
Wiring and termination
Connection is through a four-pin screw connector. A 120 ohm termination is built in and activated with a jumper, so only the two end nodes need it switched on. Data rates run from 9.6 to 115.2 kbit/s, and the interface is galvanically isolated from the drive.
The module takes +3.3 V from the drive, maximum 400 mA. It is fitted in an option slot and configured in the fieldbus parameter group, with the manual giving example settings per drive family.
Choosing serial over Ethernet
Serial links are slow compared with Ethernet but are simple to troubleshoot and tolerant of long, cheap cable runs. Use the FSCA-01 where only a handful of registers are polled.
Good practice: shielded twisted pair, one shield ground point, consistent baud rate, parity and address on every node.
Selection and planning notes
A typical Modbus RTU setup polls a short list of holding registers: control word, speed reference, status word, actual speed, current and fault code. At 19200 baud, a poll of ten registers per drive takes a few tens of milliseconds, which is fine for ventilation and pumping but slow for coordinated motion. Always keep the polling interval comfortably above the drive’s communication timeout, so one missed reply does not trip a fault.
Compatible drives are listed under AC drives; the ABB ACS580 page explains one of the common platforms. We can help decide between this serial adapter and an Ethernet option for the drive.
A short wiring test saves hours. With power off, measure the resistance between the two data lines at the network end: two active terminations in parallel read roughly sixty ohms. A reading near one hundred and twenty ohms means one end is not terminated; a value far below sixty means too many terminators are active. Check that the common reference or shield is connected consistently, and that the cable is not routed along motor cables, whose switching noise couples into long serial runs.
Documents and quotation
Seven Star LLC supplies the FSCA-01 on request from Muscat; send the drive type, control program version and the network details, and we reply with availability and lead time. The user manual (3AUA0000109533, revision C) is linked on this page.
Confirm before ordering: the drive series, whether the drive already has an embedded Modbus port, the baud rate and parity set, and termination at both bus ends.

About brand
ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need
Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
