Brand:

Chromalox DTS-HAZ Heat Trace Digital Thermostat, 30 A

Description

Digital thermostat and power connection kit for heat traced pipes and tanks

The Chromalox DTS-HAZ is a microprocessor-based digital thermostat that also serves as the power connection kit for heat trace. It is used for freeze protection or process temperature maintenance of pipes and tanks and works with constant wattage, mineral-insulated or self-regulating heating cables. It switches up to 30 A through a solid-state relay, accepts 120 to 277 VAC, and is approved for ordinary areas, Class I Division 2 and IECEx/ATEX Zone II locations as printed in the data sheet.

Because the heating cable, AC power line, alarm and RTD are all wired inside the one NEMA 4X enclosure, no separate power connection kit is needed, which cuts labour and material. The enclosure mounts directly on the pipe through its integral stand-off, or on a wall with the optional kit. A 100 ohm platinum RTD with a 3 ft lead is included and can be pipe-mounted or used to sense ambient air.

Programming, alarms and soft start

The set point, high and low temperature alarms, dead band, temperature units, soft start and alarm state are all programmed from the front panel push buttons, with LEDs for power, load and alarm and a large LED display for process values. The fail-safe solid state alarm closes or opens, as selected, on any alarm condition including loss of power, high or low temperature and RTD failure, so a building management system can see a dead thermostat as well as an out-of-range temperature. Soft start lowers the nuisance breaker tripping caused by the in-rush of self-regulating cable and can be disabled for non-heat-trace use.

Selecting and installing the DTS-HAZ

Above 500 °F (260 °C), or with mineral-insulated cable, Chromalox calls for the DTS high temperature adapter kit. Typical applications in the sheet are freeze protection of piping, process temperature maintenance and the same duties on tanks, across markets such as oil and gas, chemical processing, power generation, water treatment and food processing. Choose the AC alarm model DTS-HAZ or the DC alarm model DTS-HAZ-DC according to the voltage of the alarm circuit you will wire.

Before ordering confirm the cable type and total circuit current (maximum 30 A), supply voltage, whether the RTD senses the pipe or ambient air, the required area classification and temperature class, the cable entry arrangement and the mounting style. For other temperature instruments see temperature instrumentation, for example the JUMO safetyM STB/STW safety temperature limiter.

How the Chromalox DTS-HAZ works

An RTD sensor on the pipe sends the temperature to the controller. The controller compares it with the set point and the dead band. A solid-state relay then switches the heating cable on and off.

Where the DTS-HAZ is used

  • Freeze protection of pipes
  • Temperature maintenance of pipes
  • Tank heating
  • Constant wattage cables
  • Self-regulating cables

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the DTS-HAZ

Mount the enclosure on the pipe or on the wall and wire the heating cable, the supply, the alarm and the RTD. Enter the set point and the alarm limits. Check the RTD and the alarm at regular intervals.
