Chromalox MT / EMT Clean Water Screw Plug Immersion Heaters

Description

Copper-sheath screw plug heaters for clean water tanks

The Chromalox MT / EMT family are screw plug immersion heaters for clean, non-corrosive water. Hairpin-bent copper tubular elements are brazed into a brass NPT plug that screws straight into a tank wall, so the full element surface heats the water directly. A terminal enclosure on the plug takes the electrical connection and the units have a thermowell for the temperature control sensor, so they are supplied without a thermostat.

Typical uses are heating water in wash tanks, process baths, hot water storage that is not for human consumption, and similar clean-water duties where copper is compatible with the water chemistry. The sheet lists ratings from 0.6 kW in the 1 in plug to 18 kW in the 2-1/2 in plug, at watt densities between 46 and 86 W/in2.

MT-3 2-1/2 in NPT 3 – 18 kW 120, 208, 240, 480 V, 1 and 3 ph 46 – 53 3

For the 1 in NPT MT series the sheet lists models MT-750, MT-1000, MT-1250, MT-1500, MT-2000, MT-2500 and MT-3000, each in 120 V and 240 V, with the dimension B rising from 6-5/16 in at 0.75 kW to 19-7/8 in at 3 kW. The MT-1 series adds models such as MT-160A, MT-110A, MT-112A, MT-115A and MT-120A, and larger plugs carry the higher kW, three-element and three-phase builds.

Selecting an MT or EMT heater

Start from the tank opening: the plug thread must match the available NPT boss, and the hole size minimum on the sheet drawings must be respected. Then choose kW from the heat-up time and losses, the supply voltage and phase, and the enclosure by area: E1 for general purpose, E4TP where moisture is the concern and E2 where an explosion resistant housing is specified. Because the sheaths are copper, confirm the water quality, and use the stainless steel MTS/EMTS or other families for corrosive solutions. Heater controls and sensors can be matched from the HVAC and combustion and temperature ranges.

Always confirm heater length against the tank depth, the thermowell requirement for your controller and any local electrical approvals before ordering.

How the Chromalox MT/EMT works

Copper tubular elements heat when current passes through them. The elements sit directly in the water through a threaded tank opening. A sensor in the thermowell reports the water temperature to an external control. The control switches the heater on and off to hold the set point.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the MT/EMT

Screw the plug into the tank wall with a suitable sealant. Fit the heater so the elements stay fully covered by water. Connect the supply in the terminal enclosure. Place the control sensor in the thermowell. Check the elements for scale at regular visits.
