Barksdale BPS3000 Electronic Dual Pressure Switch with IO-Link

An electronic pressure switch with display, analog output and optional IO-Link

The Barksdale BPS3000 combines two programmable switch points, a 4-digit red LED display and an optional 4-20 mA or 0-10 V analog output in one stainless steel body. It replaces a mechanical switch plus a gauge on hydraulic and pneumatic circuits, and the setpoints are entered with three push-buttons instead of by turning an adjustment screw. The display and electrical connection rotate by 320 degrees, which helps when the sensor is mounted in a tight spot.

Barksdale lists the machine tool industry, factory automation, injection moulding machines, lubrication monitoring, pumps and compressors, and hydraulic and pneumatic applications. A 12-bit converter samples at 1000 per second and the switch outputs can run up to 100 Hz, so the unit suits rapid cycling; a delay of 0.0 to 50.0 s can be set to ride through pressure spikes.

Measuring ranges and ordering code

Gauge ranges are 0 to 3, 15, 50, 75, 150, 750, 1500, 3000, 6000 and 9000 psig; absolute ranges are 0 to 15, 75 and 150 psia. Ranges are printed with a code such as 9000P for 9000 psig or 0150PA for 150 psia. The datasheet example is BPS3 8 N V M 9000P P: series, output code, process connection, seal, electrical connection, range and sensor. The standard sensor is ceramic and a piezoresistive sensor is the option; several ranges (all absolute ranges, 0 to 3, 15, 50, 75 psig and 9000 psig) require the piezoresistive sensor, and the absolute ranges and 0 to 3, 15, 50 and 75 psig are rated IP65 only, so read the footnotes against your range. Seals are FKM as standard or EPDM.

Output codes are 1 dual switch point; 2 single switch point plus 4-20 mA (0-10 V selectable); 3 single switch point plus 0-10 V (4-20 mA selectable); 4 dual switch point plus 4-20 mA; 5 dual switch plus 0-10 V; 6 dual switch points as one normally open and one normally closed SPST output (needs the piezoresistive sensor, not UL approved); 7 IO-Link with dual switch point; 8 IO-Link with dual switch point plus 4-20 mA (0-10 V selectable).

Connections, accuracy and IO-Link data

Process connections are 1/4 inch NPT, 1/2 inch NPT flush diaphragm, 7/16-20 SAE, 7/16-20 JIC 37 degree, G1/4 male and G1/2 flush diaphragm (piezoresistive only). The electrical connection is an M12 x 1 plug with 4, 5 or 8 pins; a mating connector is not included, and Barksdale lists straight and right-angle M12 connectors and 1 m shielded cables as accessories. Linearity error is under plus or minus 0.5 percent of full scale at 25 C, repeatability plus or minus 0.1 percent, and proof pressure is 1.5 times rated pressure. The IO-Link interface runs COM2 at 38.4 kBaud, revision 1.1 to IEC 61131-9, with a minimum cycle time of 2.5 ms and a Type A master port.

Installation and what to confirm before ordering

Supply is 15 to 32 V DC with reverse-polarity protection, drawing about 50 mA without load. Media temperature is -13 to 212 F (-25 to 100 C) and compensated from 14 to 158 F. Approvals printed on the datasheet are cULus (file E42816) and BV-50018/A02, with the BV approval only on output codes 1 to 5; with cULus the maximum ambient is 140 F and supply maximum 28 V DC. Confirm the range, absolute or gauge, sensor type, output code, connection thread, seal compatibility with your fluid, whether a surge dampener (brass) is needed, and the mating M12 cable.
