Barksdale BDS3000 Electronic Dual Differential Pressure Switch

A differential pressure switch with display for filters, pumps and lube lines

The Barksdale BDS3000 measures the difference between two pressures and switches on it, with a 4-digit red LED display, two programmable switch points and an optional analog output. A piezoresistive sensor with 316L stainless steel sensors sits behind two 1/4 inch NPT female ports (low and high side), and the housing is stainless steel and PBT. Barksdale lists filtration, the machine tool industry, factory automation, lubrication monitoring and pumps and compressors as applications; across a filter or strainer the switch gives a clean readout of pressure drop and a contact when the element needs changing.

Setpoints, window mode, delay and the analog span are entered with three push-buttons, and the display and connector rotate by 320 degrees. The IO-Link version passes process values and diagnostics to a PLC over the same M12 connection.

Ranges and ordering code

Three differential ranges are offered. The datasheet gives overload data for each: proof pressure when the high side exceeds the low side, proof pressure when the low side exceeds the high, and the common-mode (line) pressure on both ports.

The datasheet example is BDS3 4 F V M 0500P: series, output code, 1/4 inch NPT female connection (F), FKM seal (V), M12 electrical connection (M) and range. Output code 4 is dual switch point plus 4-20 mA (0-10 V field selectable); output code 8 is IO-Link with dual switch point plus 4-20 mA (0-10 V selectable). Note that the reverse-pressure proof rating on the 0500P range is only 150 psid, so protect the sensor against reversed differential during start-up and venting.

Electrical and accuracy data

Supply is 15 to 32 V DC with reverse-polarity protection and about 50 mA without load. The switching outputs are PNP or NPN (field selectable on IO-Link units), adjustable from 0 to 125 percent of full scale, with a maximum of 500 mA (250 mA on IO-Link units) at up to 100 Hz and a delay of 0.0 to 50.0 s. The analog outputs are 4-20 mA with a 2 ms scanning rate, or 0 to 10 V DC at up to 10 mA. Linearity error is under plus or minus 0.5 percent of full scale at 25 C and repeatability plus or minus 0.1 percent; temperature influence is under plus or minus 0.2 percent of span zero and 0.3 percent of span per 10 K over the 32 to 122 F compensation range. The IO-Link interface is COM2 at 38.4 kBaud, revision 1.1 to IEC 61131-9, with a minimum process cycle time of 2.5 ms.

Installation and what to confirm before ordering

The connection is a 5-pin M12 x 1 plug, and the mating connector is not included; Barksdale lists straight and right-angle 5-pin M12 connectors and 1 m shielded cables as accessories. Media temperature is -13 to 212 F (-25 to 100 C), electronics 14 to 158 F and storage -22 to 176 F; the enclosure is Type 4X (IP65) / Type 6 (IP67). Size is 3.00 x 1.60 x 4.81 inches and weight about 1.5 lb. Confirm the differential range and both port pressures against the proof ratings, the fluid against 316L and FKM, and whether you need IO-Link. Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the BDS3000
