CS Instruments DS 500 Intelligent Chart Recorder
Overview
The CS Instruments DS 500 is an intelligent paperless chart recorder built for compressed air and gas systems, combining measurement, control, indication, alarm, recording and evaluation in one wall-mounted or panel-mounted unit. A 7-inch colour touch screen shows live values, curves and statistics, while 4, 8 or 12 freely assignable inputs accept up to 12 analogue sensors or up to 40 digital sensors via Modbus RTU. The CS Instruments DS 500 is intended as the central data hub of a compressor station: flow meters, dew point sensors, pressure transmitters, temperature probes and power meters all report into it, and it calculates the key figures that tell an energy manager how efficiently compressed air is being produced and used.
Seven Star LLC supplies the CS Instruments DS 500 together with matching sensors to industrial customers throughout the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. As a trusted supplier with engineering support in Muscat, we help maintenance and energy teams define the number of inputs, the sensor package and the software licence needed for compressor room monitoring, ISO 8573 air quality checks or ISO 50001 energy programmes.
Operating Principle of the CS Instruments DS 500
The CS Instruments DS 500 reads digital and analogue signals, scales them into engineering units, stores them on a 16 GB micro SD card and displays them as values and trend curves. Digital CS sensors of the VA flow and FA dew point series connect through the SDI interface and are identified automatically, while third-party devices connect through RS 485 Modbus RTU or through analogue signals: 0/4 to 20 mA, 0 to 1 V, 0 to 10 V, 0 to 30 V, Pt100 and Pt1000 in 2- or 3-wire connection, KTY and pulse inputs up to 1 kHz. Current inputs resolve 0.0001 mA with ±0.03 mA ±0.05 % accuracy, and Pt100 inputs measure −200 to 850 °C with ±0.2 °C accuracy between −100 and 400 °C.
Beyond simple recording, the CS Instruments DS 500 processes the data. An optional mathematics function creates virtual channels by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing inputs, so that typical compressed air indicators such as kWh per m³ of generated air, cost per m³ and the summed consumption of several lines are computed in real time. An optional totaliser converts a 4 to 20 mA flow signal from a third-party meter into a cumulative consumption reading. Four alarm relays can be assigned to any sensor with free thresholds, hysteresis and alarm delay.
Engineering Design of the CS Instruments DS 500
The CS Instruments DS 500 is housed in a die-cast metal enclosure of 280 × 170 × 90 mm with a polyester front screen, rated IP65 and weighing 3.5 kg, with 18 PG cable glands for sensors and supply. A panel-mounting version for a 250 × 156 mm cut-out is available. The unit runs from 100 to 240 VAC, 50 to 60 Hz, or optionally 24 VDC, and its internal power supplies feed 24 VDC to the connected sensors at up to 130 mA each, which eliminates external power units and the associated wiring. Operating temperature is 0 to 50 °C.
Data leaves the recorder via USB stick, Ethernet or RS 485 using Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP, with an optional integrated web server for remote viewing through a browser. Signal outputs of connected VA and FA sensors can be looped through as analogue or pulse outputs. The CS Basic software evaluates the recorded data in graphical and tabular form, and CS Network provides a client/server energy monitoring solution across several recorders and many measuring points. On screen, the time axis can be scrolled and zoomed with a finger to analyse peak values, and a measuring site name can be assigned to each input.

Industrial Applications
The main use of the CS Instruments DS 500 is permanent monitoring of compressor stations. Installed in the compressor room, it records the flow delivered by each compressor, the system pressure, the pressure dew point after the dryers and the electrical power drawn by the compressors through CS power meters with external current transformers up to 2000 A. From these it calculates specific power in kWh per m³, reveals leakage during weekends, shows whether dryers keep the dew point within the required ISO 8573 class, and raises an alarm through its relays when pressure drops or humidity rises. Food, beverage and pharmaceutical plants use the CS Instruments DS 500 to document compressed air quality including residual oil and particles.
In Oman, the CS Instruments DS 500 suits manufacturing plants in the Rusayl and Sohar industrial estates, bottling and food producers, cement and steel works, gas processing and power plants with instrument air systems, and facilities in Duqm and Salalah that need documented utility performance. Seven Star LLC supports these customers as a trusted supplier, offering engineering support in Muscat. A typical package combines the recorder with the CS Instruments FA 510/515 dew point sensor and thermal mass flow meters such as the Endress+Hauser t-mass 65F on larger headers.
