Bently Nevada 3500/77M Recip Cylinder Pressure Monitor
Overview
The Bently Nevada 3500/77M Recip Cylinder Pressure Monitor is a four-channel module for the Bently Nevada 3500 rack that reads Bently Nevada approved pressure transducers fitted to reciprocating compressor cylinders. It conditions the signals into a set of pressure measurements that describe how each compressor end is really performing, and compares them with user-programmable alarms. Because cylinder pressure drives rod load, the Bently Nevada 3500/77M gives both a performance picture (suction and discharge pressure, compression ratio) and a mechanical protection picture (peak rod compression, peak rod tension and rod reversal) from the same sensors.

Measurement Principle
Each channel of the Bently Nevada 3500/77M provides eight measured variables. Five relate to a single compression chamber: discharge pressure, suction pressure, maximum pressure, minimum pressure and compression ratio. Three more combine one or more channel values with configured mechanical parameters of the machine, such as piston and rod dimensions, to compute peak rod compression, peak rod tension and degree of rod reversal. Rod reversal matters because the crosshead pin bushing relies on the load changing direction during each revolution to let oil reach the bearing surfaces; insufficient reversal is a well-known cause of pin and bushing failure.
Inputs are positive-voltage transducers rated in psia, with ranges listed from 100 psia up to 10,000 psia. The datasheet assumes +0.5 Vdc at 0 psia and +10.0 Vdc at the full-range value, and every transducer is supplied with its own two-point scale factor. Frequency response is 0 to 5.5 kHz on all configured channels, which is enough to follow the pressure curve through each stroke. Pressure accuracy is within ±0.5% of transducer full range at +25 °C and within ±1.0% over −30 to +65 °C. Alert setpoints can be configured on any two of the active measured variables.
Engineering Design of the Bently Nevada 3500/77M
The Bently Nevada 3500/77M fills one full-height front slot and one full-height rear slot in the rack. Transducers are powered from the module at +23.0 ±0.8 Vdc with 24.5 mA current limiting on each channel, and the cylinder pressure I/O presents a 50 kΩ input impedance. The front panel shows OK, TX/RX and Bypass LEDs and offers a short-circuit-protected coaxial buffered output for each of the four transducers at 550 Ω; when the cylinder pressure I/O module is used, these buffered outputs are inverted and offset by −2.265 Vdc, which is worth noting before connecting a portable analyser. Power consumption is 7.8 W with transducer supplies at full load.
Two I/O modules are offered, with internal or external terminations, and external termination blocks cannot be combined with internal-termination I/O. Accessories listed in the datasheet include the Recip Multi-Event Wheel kit, which gives the rack the crank-angle reference needed to place pressure values on the stroke, the MTL 7796+ external barrier for hazardous area transducer loops, and custom band hardware. The standard product supports machine speeds down to 60 rpm, and modification 135M8200-01 extends this to 30 rpm.
