Woodward SPM-D10 Synchronizing Unit

Description

Overview

The Woodward SPM-D10 is a microprocessor-based synchronizing unit for generator sets and other AC power sources. Using the appropriate discrete inputs it performs three functions: synchronization, synch-check and dead bus start. A single front-mounted display and three push buttons give access to configuration, and a PC configuration socket on the side of the unit allows setup from a computer. The unit mounts flush in a standard DIN panel cutout, so it fits into existing switchgear fronts easily.

In Oman, generators run in parallel with the grid or with each other at oil and gas camps, utilities, hospitals, ports and industrial sites, and every one of those connections needs a reliable breaker-closing decision. Seven Star LLC supplies the Woodward SPM-D10 with engineering support in Muscat, helping panel builders and maintenance teams source synchronizers together with related switchgear components such as the ABB VD4/P 12.20.40 vacuum circuit breaker.

Synchronizing Principle

Before a circuit breaker is closed, the voltage, frequency and phase angle on both sides of the breaker must agree. The Woodward SPM-D10 compares the generator voltage with the busbar or mains voltage and acts on its internal frequency and voltage controllers to bring the generator into line. When the conditions are inside the configured windows for the required time, it issues a close command to the circuit breaker through a relay contact. If the breaker cannot be closed within the configured synchronization time, a time monitoring function raises an alarm.

Two further modes use the same hardware. In synch-check mode the unit lets an operator close the breaker manually, but only when the phase and voltage conditions are acceptable. In dead bus start mode it permits the breaker to close without synchronization when the busbar is verified as de-energized.

Engineering Design of the Woodward SPM-D10

The model designation of the Woodward SPM-D10 encodes the measuring voltage and mounting, for example a 400 Vac unit with no current transformer inputs and flush mounting. Standard units use a 24 Vdc supply, while N and XN packages accept 90 to 250 Vac. The measuring inputs cover 40.0 to 70.0 Hz with class 1 accuracy, and the housing measures 144 x 72 x 122 mm with a 138 x 67 mm front cutout and a weight of about 800 g. Protection is IP42 from the front, IP54 with the gasket, and IP20 from the back.

The standard unit has three-position controller outputs for speed and for voltage. The X and XN packages add analog controller outputs, which can be configured as current, voltage or PWM signals for governors and voltage regulators, while the HJV package adds mains monitoring for over and under frequency, over and under voltage and phase or vector shift. Password protection guards the configuration, and a parameter list at the rear of the manual records the default and customer settings.

Key Features

The following capabilities define the Woodward SPM-D10:

  • Synchronization, synch-check and dead bus start in one compact flush-mounted unit.
  • Double voltage and frequency display on the LC display, with LEDs showing breaker status, automatic mode and phase and voltage deviation.
  • Three-position speed and voltage controller outputs as standard, with raise and lower relay contacts.
  • Optional analog current, voltage or PWM controller outputs through the X and XN packages.
  • Optional mains monitoring with the HJV package, including phase and vector shift detection for mains decoupling.
  • Configurable frequency and voltage controller dead bands, ramps, gain and reset settings for stable tuning.
  • Wide-range 90 to 250 Vac power supply available with the N and XN packages.
  • UL and cUL listing for ordinary locations and CE marking for European conformity.

Industrial Applications

Generator paralleling is routine across the Sultanate of Oman: diesel and gas engine sets at remote drilling and production camps, standby systems at hospitals and data facilities, and captive power plants in the Sohar and Salalah economic zones. The Woodward SPM-D10 suits these duties because it is small, easy to wire and works with a wide range of governors and automatic voltage regulators through its raise and lower or analog outputs.

Projects that need grid-parallel operation also benefit from the HJV mains monitoring package. Seven Star LLC supplies the Woodward SPM-D10 alongside protection and metering equipment such as the ABB REF542plus feeder protection and control relay and the Janitza UMG 508 universal measuring device, so electrical contractors can order synchronization, protection and metering from the same supplier.

About brand
Speed, load and fuel control for engines and turbines is Woodward's field. The company dates from 1870 and is based in Fort Collins, USA, and its controls sit on steam turbines, gas engines and generator sets in power plants and oil and gas sites. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Woodward turbine controls, synchronizers and gas fuel valves for operators in Oman and the GCC, working from the part number on the unit.

Woodward products listed

Three items show the spread of the industrial line. The 505XT is a digital governor for industrial steam turbines, the larger sibling of the 505. The SPM-D10 is a synchronizing unit that matches a generator to a bus before the breaker closes. The TecJet 50 Plus is a gas fuel control valve with built-in actuator and electronics, used to meter fuel on gas engines. Buyers who search for Woodward gas valves or Woodward governor control systems usually need one of these families.

Ordering Woodward parts: what we need

Woodward identifies hardware by an eight-digit part number in the form 8xxx-xxxx, printed on the nameplate with a revision letter and serial number. Send all three. For a 505XT, add the supply voltage version and whether the turbine has extraction or admission. For a synchronizer, give the measuring voltage and the exact SPM-D10 variant. For a TecJet, state the fuel gas, the flow size and the control signal used by the engine controller.

Frequently Asked Questions

What functions does the Woodward SPM-D10 perform?
The Woodward SPM-D10 performs synchronization, synch-check and dead bus start. It matches frequency, phase and voltage before closing a circuit breaker, and its controller outputs can bias a governor and a voltage regulator toward the busbar values.
Which controller outputs does the Woodward SPM-D10 provide?
The standard unit provides three-position raise and lower outputs for speed and voltage. The X and XN packages add analog outputs configurable as current, voltage or PWM signals, which helps the unit work with many electronic governors and automatic voltage regulators.
Can the Woodward SPM-D10 monitor the mains supply?
Yes, with the HJV package. It adds monitoring of mains over and under frequency, over and under voltage and phase or vector shift, which is useful for grid-parallel generator installations that need decoupling protection.
What power supply and mounting does the Woodward SPM-D10 use?
Standard, X and HJV units use a 24 Vdc supply, while N and XN packages accept 90 to 250 Vac. The unit is flush-mounted in a 138 x 67 mm cutout and measures 144 x 72 x 122 mm, with IP54 protection from the front when the gasket is fitted.
