Beamex MB Metrology Temperature Block

Description

Overview

Beamex MB is a user-friendly, highly accurate metrology temperature dry block that brings laboratory-level temperature calibration into the field and the workshop. The series covers temperatures from −45 °C to +700 °C across four models, MB140, MB155, MB425 and MB700, and delivers the accuracy normally associated with liquid baths in a convenient dry block. A conventional dry block usually needs an external reference sensor for better accuracy, whereas the Beamex MB has accurate internal temperature measurement with display accuracy up to ±0.1 °C.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Beamex MB on request to calibration laboratories, power plants, refineries and quality departments in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Because the MB is a heat source rather than a measuring instrument, buyers normally pair it with a documenting calibrator such as the Beamex MC6 advanced field calibrator and communicator, which reads the reference probe and the sensor under test.

Temperature Control Principle

A dry block creates a stable temperature zone inside a metal insert, and a temperature sensor placed in the insert is compared with a reference. The Beamex MB improves on this with unique temperature control techniques that give stability of up to ±0.005 °C, a figure usually found only in baths. Dual-zone control and an extended well depth hold the lower and upper parts of the well at a uniform temperature, so the axial uniformity reaches up to ±0.02 °C over the working length.

Uniformity across the insert is just as important as stability. Radial uniformity, the temperature difference between the holes of the insert, is up to ±0.01 °C, so a reference sensor and a sensor under test see the same temperature. The immersion depth of up to 203 mm (160 mm in the MB140) reduces stem conduction error, the heat that flows up the probe stem into the air, which becomes more significant at high temperature. The dual-zone design also compensates for loading when several probes are inserted, with loading effects as low as ±0.005 °C.

Engineering Design of the Beamex MB

The Beamex MB measures 366 x 203 x 323 mm and weighs 12.2 to 14.6 kg depending on the model, which makes it transportable for field calibration trips. The MB140 covers −45 to 140 °C and the MB155 −30 to 155 °C, both with ±0.1 °C display accuracy over the full range. The MB425 covers 35 to 425 °C and the MB700 covers 50 to 700 °C, calibrated to 660 °C with a reference thermometer recommended at higher temperatures. The two low-temperature models run on 550 W and the high-temperature models on 1025 W, from 115 or 230 V mains.

A ten-key keypad, an LCD in °C or °F and a resolution of 0.001 degrees make the block easy to operate, and an RS-232 interface allows computer control. Multi-hole inserts MH1 and MH2 accept metric and imperial probe diameters such as 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10 mm and 1/4 inch, and blank and special inserts can be ordered. The R model adds a built-in reference thermometer input for a 100 ohm PRT through a 4-wire 6-pin Lemo connector, with resistance accuracy of 25 ppm of reading from 20 to 400 ohms and ITS-90, CVD and resistance characterisations. An accredited calibration certificate is supplied.

Key Features

The Beamex MB combines laboratory performance with portability:

  • Four models cover −45 to +700 °C, from refrigeration and cold-chain checks to high-temperature process sensors.
  • Display accuracy of up to ±0.1 °C and stability up to ±0.005 °C give bath-like performance without liquid.
  • Dual-zone control and long well depth deliver axial uniformity up to ±0.02 °C for reliable comparison of reference and test probes.
  • Radial uniformity up to ±0.01 °C ensures all insert holes are at the same temperature.
  • Immersion depth up to 203 mm limits stem conduction error, which is important for long industrial probes at high temperature.
  • Loading specifications up to ±0.005 °C keep temperature stable when several probes are inserted at once.
  • The R model includes a built-in reference sensor input with reading accuracy of up to ±0.006 °C, avoiding a separate reference thermometer.
  • RS-232 computer interface and an accredited calibration certificate support automated and traceable calibration work.

Industrial Applications

The Beamex MB is used to calibrate RTDs, thermocouples, temperature switches and thermometers in power generation, oil and gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage and heat-treatment applications. The low-temperature models suit refrigeration, cold storage and cryogenic-adjacent checks, while the MB425 and MB700 cover steam, flue gas and furnace sensors. A calibration laboratory can use it as a working standard for field sensors, and a maintenance team can bring it to the instrument for a sensor check at the point of installation.

For customers in Oman, Seven Star LLC supports temperature calibration programmes in utility plants, desalination units, refineries in Sohar and Duqm, and food and beverage factories in Muscat. Teams comparing dry blocks often look at the Isotech Jupiter 4852 portable dry block calibrator or the Isotech Europa 4520 Isocal-6 dry block temperature calibrator, and we can help weigh range, uniformity and portability. About brand
Calibration equipment and software are the only things Beamex makes. Founded in 1975 in Pietarsaari, Finland, the company supplies the field calibrators that instrument technicians carry to check transmitters, switches and temperature sensors. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists Beamex MC6, MC6-Ex, MC4 and MC2 calibrators, the MB metrology temperature block and the ePG electric pressure pump and controller.

Beamex calibrators and accessories listed here

The handheld calibrators differ mainly in scope:
  • MC6: advanced field calibrator and communicator
  • MC6-Ex: the intrinsically safe field calibrator for hazardous areas
  • MC4: documenting process calibrator
  • MC2: hand-held process calibrator
Two items complete a calibration setup. The MB metrology temperature block is a dry block for calibrating temperature sensors against a reference. The ePG is an electric pump and controller that generates the test pressure, so the technician does not have to pump by hand.

Where Beamex calibrators are used

Any plant with a calibration program is a user: oil and gas facilities, power stations, water utilities, pharmaceutical and food plants across the GCC. A documenting calibrator stores the as-found and as-left results of each test, so they can be transferred to calibration software instead of being written down by hand. In classified areas the MC6-Ex lets work continue without a hot work permit for the instrument itself.

Ordering Beamex calibrators: what we need

A Beamex calibrator is configured to order. Tell us the model, the internal pressure module ranges, any external pressure modules, the communicator protocols you need (for example HART), and the accessories: pumps, hoses, cases and test leads. For the MB state the temperature range. If you need accredited calibration certificates from the manufacturer, say so at the start because it is an order option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature range does the Beamex MB cover?
The series covers −45 to 700 degrees C across four models: MB140 from −45 to 140 degrees C, MB155 from −30 to 155, MB425 from 35 to 425 and MB700 from 50 to 700, calibrated to 660 degrees C.
How stable is the Beamex MB?
Stability reaches ±0.005 degrees C on the MB140 and MB155 and between ±0.005 and ±0.03 degrees C on the high-temperature models, depending on range. Dual-zone control and a deep well deliver axial uniformity up to ±0.02 degrees C.
Do I need an external reference thermometer?
Not always. The display accuracy of up to ±0.1 degrees C is good without one, and the R model has a built-in reference sensor input with accuracy up to ±0.006 degrees C. A reference thermometer is recommended above 660 degrees C on the MB700.
What probe sizes fit the inserts?
Multi-hole inserts MH1 and MH2 accept probes of 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10 mm and 1/4 inch in various combinations, and blank and special inserts can be ordered for non-standard sensors.
