Bently Nevada 3500/20 Rack Interface Module
Overview
Bently Nevada 3500/20 is the Rack Interface Module (RIM) that serves as the primary communications gateway for the Bently Nevada 3500 Series Machinery Protection System, installed in slot 1 of every 3500 rack alongside the power supplies. It enables engineers to configure the rack, retrieve real-time and historical machinery data, and connect the protection system to plant-wide communication networks, functioning as the essential link between the condition monitoring hardware and the control room.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the 3500/20 Rack Interface Module to power generation, oil and gas, and petrochemical operators across Oman and the wider GCC. Every module is supplied with manufacturer documentation and local technical assistance from our instrumentation division.
Measurement Principle
Unlike the transducer-interfacing monitor modules elsewhere in the 3500 rack, the Bently Nevada 3500/20 does not process a vibration or process signal directly. Instead, it communicates with every other module across the rack backplane using a proprietary protocol, continuously polling channel status, alarm states, and configuration data so that this information can be retrieved by external communication processors such as TDXnet, TDIX, or DDIX and forwarded to plant historians, asset management software, or a distributed control system.
Because the RIM operates outside the critical monitoring path, a failure of the interface module does not interrupt the protection functions performed by the individual monitor cards, a deliberate architectural separation that keeps safety-critical trip logic isolated from communications and configuration functions. For Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) rack installations, a specialized TMR version of the module performs monitor channel comparison and implements voting logic across the redundant channel set, adding a further layer of protection-system integrity without compromising this separation of duties.
Engineering Design of the Bently Nevada 3500/20
The Bently Nevada 3500/20 is built as a standard-width plug-in card occupying slot 1 of the 3500 rack chassis, with a front-panel RS232 serial configuration port supporting connections up to 30 meters, four status LEDs (OK, TX/RX, TM, CONFIG OK) for at-a-glance diagnostics, a keylock switch selecting RUN or PROGRAM mode, and an address switch supporting up to 63 individually addressable racks on a single communications network. Interchangeable I/O modules fitted to the rear of the RIM add modem, RS232, or RS422 connectivity depending on the plant communications infrastructure.
Rack-to-rack and rack-to-host communication over the RS422 backplane connector supports daisy-chained cable runs of up to 1,200 meters, allowing a single communication processor to service multiple 3500 racks distributed across a large plant without local computer hardware at every rack location. A relay output rated at 5A at 24 Vdc or 120 Vac is provided for annunciation, and the module operates across a wide -30°C to +65°C temperature range, suiting both air-conditioned control rooms and less-controlled equipment rooms found in older facilities.
Key Features
The Bently Nevada 3500/20 Bently Nevada 3500/20 provides the communications backbone that ties a 3500 protection rack into the wider plant automation environment:
- Mandatory rack-configuration and data-retrieval interface, required in slot 1 of every 3500 Series rack.
- Compatible with external communication processors including TDXnet, TDIX, and DDIX.
- Operates outside the critical monitoring path, so RIM communications issues never interrupt protection functions.
- Specialized TMR version performs monitor channel comparison and voting logic for redundant rack architectures.
- Front-panel RS232 configuration port plus RS422 backplane connectivity for cable runs up to 1,200 meters.
- Address switch supports up to 63 individually addressable racks on a single communications network.
- Keylock RUN/PROGRAM switch prevents unauthorized configuration changes on a live protection system.
- 5A relay output at 24 Vdc/120 Vac for local annunciation of interface or rack status.
Industrial Applications
The Bently Nevada 3500/20 Bently Nevada 3500/20 is present in essentially every 3500 Series machinery protection rack deployed on steam and gas turbines, compressor trains, and turbogenerators across power generation plants, LNG facilities, and refineries, wherever a plant wants centralized visibility of turbomachinery health from the control room rather than requiring technicians to visit each rack individually. Multi-rack sites distributed across large process areas rely on its long-distance RS422 connectivity to consolidate dozens of protection racks onto a single monitoring network.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the 3500/20 Rack Interface Module to power stations, refineries, and petrochemical complexes across Oman and the GCC, including operators within the Sohar and Salalah economic zones and Duqm refinery cluster. Local engineering support and sourcing of spare modules on request help plant reliability teams maintain rack communications availability during turnarounds and unplanned outages.
