Mounted tapered roller bearings for shock loads, thrust and wet, dirty sites
The Timken Type E mounted tapered roller bearing puts a double extended tapered roller bearing into a cast-iron housing with locking collars, so one unit carries radial load, thrust in either direction, or both. Where a ball unit would be marginal, Type E is specified for pulp and paper, power generation, mining, cement and aggregate plants. Timken states a calculated design life 47 percent higher than leading competitors, achieved with optimised bearing profiles and improved surface finishes.
The premium Timken tapered roller bearing inside the housing is rated for 25 percent more load capacity, 113 percent more calculated life than the standard Timken bearing, and up to three times the misalignment capability. A self-aligning version, ESA, adds a steel cartridge that accepts plus or minus 4 degrees of misalignment. Every unit is machined to accept Timken secondary sealing end covers.

How to select and read the Type E part number
A double-collar unit is written E P2B TRB 2 15/16: Type E dimensions, two-bolt cast-iron pillow block, tapered roller bearing, 2 15/16 inch bore. Single-locking-collar units add an A, for example E-P2BA-TRB-2 15/16. Metric bores are written with MM, for example 120MM. Take-up codes are TU for wide slot and TTU for top angle; a TTUA unit is the single-collar top-angle version.
The catalogue gives selection tables for radial-only loads by speed and life, and the life equation with the Timken adjustment factors for combined loads. For tapered bearings a radial load induces a thrust reaction that must be opposed by thrust from the other row, so the unit rating is the combination of the two rows. Where shock or vibration is expected, Timken suggests multiplying the equivalent radial load by 1.5 and validating by testing.
What to confirm before ordering
Confirm the shaft diameter, housing shape, single or double collar, end covers (open or closed), whether self-alignment is needed, the speed and the thrust direction.
