Swan AMI Soditrace Trace Sodium Analyzer for Condensate and High-Purity Water

Description

Sodium at parts-per-trillion level for ultra-pure water

The Swan AMI Soditrace measures sodium ions in the trace range in condensate and high-purity water. The manual states that sodium measurement is used for quality control in high-purity water applications and to monitor breakthrough of ion exchangers. The swan.ch page lists power, semiconductor and nuclear applications and a lowest detection limit of 0.001 ppb (1 ppt).

It is a complete system with transmitter, sensors, flow cell, pH-controlled reagent dosing and a device for automatic calibration and sensor regeneration, all on a stainless steel mounting plate. The measurement uses a glass ion-sensitive electrode, and sodium readings below 1 ppb need a special glass formulation for the sensing electrode.

Reagent conditioning and automatic care

A measuring limit of 0.001 ppb needs the sample conditioned to at least pH 12 while keeping sample integrity, and the best results are obtained with diisopropylamine (DIPA). An air pump carries reagent vapor to an air lift pump, and a conductivity sensor measures the amount of reagent added. A PID controller switches a valve to hold the conductivity at 450 uS/cm for low sodium readings, and a fall below the set point raises an error when the reagent is exhausted.

The system regenerates the sodium electrode automatically at a programmed interval, or 12 hours before a calibration, by etching it with a regeneration solution. Calibration is a three-point procedure in which a measured volume of standard, about 500 times smaller than the sample volume, is added to a closed loop and the reading is allowed to stabilize.

What to confirm before ordering

The sample must meet the stated limits: pH of at least 7, ammonium below 10 ppm and clean, oil-free water. Plan for a DIPA reagent bottle, sodium standard solution, regeneration solution and reference electrolyte, which are consumables. The unit is for indoor mounting and the installation steps include a 24 hour run-in period.

Panel dimensions are given as 860 mm in the text but 850 mm in the drawing of the manual, so the drawing should be requested for mounting. State AC or DC supply and communication options in the enquiry.

How the Swan AMI Soditrace works

The AMI Soditrace measures sodium with a glass electrode that responds to sodium ions. A small stream of sample passes through a flow cell, where it meets the sodium electrode and a calomel reference electrode. The sample is first raised to a high pH by adding a reagent vapor, so that hydrogen ions do not disturb the reading. The voltage between the electrodes is converted to a sodium value. A conductivity sensor checks that the right amount of reagent has been added.

Where the Swan AMI Soditrace is used

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the AMI Soditrace

Mount the panel on a wall in a clean spot. Connect the sample line to the inlet and the drain to the outlet, keeping the outlet free of pressure. Fill the reagent bottle and connect the power. Allow the electrodes to settle, then calibrate. Replace the electrodes and the reagent on the interval in the manual, and watch the alarms.

About brand

Swan Analytical is the brand of Swan Analytische Instrumente AG, a Swiss manufacturer in Hinwil that has built online water analyzers since 1991. Its AMI range monitors water quality continuously in power plant steam and water cycles, ultra-pure water, potable water, pools, pharmaceutical and semiconductor processes. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat and lists selected Swan AMI analyzers for power and water plants.

Swan AMI analyzer families

Swan builds panel-mounted AMI monitors for disinfectants (Codes-II, Trides), dissolved oxygen (Oxytrace), conductivity (Powercon), silica (Silitrace), sodium (Soditrace, Sodium A and P), hydrazine, turbidity (Turbiwell, Turbitrace) and total organic carbon (LineTOC). Some earlier AMI models are shown as discontinued on swan.ch, where a newer AMI-II range is listed separately.

Ordering Swan analyzers: what we need

Send the model, measuring range, AC or DC supply, number of sample streams and options. We confirm the model status and the configuration against the Swan operator manual before quoting. Reagents and sensor consumables are ordered separately.
