Description

The Swagelok SS-4P4T2 has male NPT threads at both ends, so it can be screwed straight into female NPT ports on tees, blocks and vessels. It is the most compact of the 1/4 in. P4T plug valves at 1.90 in. (48.3 mm) overall, and its catalog Cv is 1.0, higher than the female NPT version. A 316 stainless steel body, a PTFE-coated plug and a 3000 psig (206 bar) rating make it a neat isolation valve for tight instrument panels.

Compact threaded isolation

Male NPT ends remove the nuts and sleeves of a tube fitting, giving the shortest body of the group at 1.90 in. and a body height B of 0.95 in. (24.1 mm). It is an excellent choice where space is tight and the mating ports are female NPT. The catalog flow table gives air flow of 3.7 std ft3/min and water flow of 1.0 U.S. gal/min at a 1 psi pressure drop. Note that the Swagelok web data page lists the Cv with a slightly different value, so confirm the Cv in the catalog table if flow sizing is critical.

Tapered threads need sealant, and the valve should be tightened with a wrench on the flats of the body.

Ratings and care

For the 316 stainless P4T series the catalog rates 3000 psig from -10 to 200 F, 2000 psig at 250 F and 1000 psig from 300 to 400 F with PTFE-coated FKM O-rings. A snap ring retains the plug and the plug assembly is replaceable. Forward-flow throttling is allowed, but reverse-flow differential is limited to 150 psig. Silicone-based lubricant is used on wetted parts.

The factory shutoff test is at 600 psig (41.3 bar).

Picking among 1/4 in. P4T valves

Use SS-4P4T for tube fitting ends (Cv 1.6), SS-4P4T4 for female NPT (Cv 0.9) and SS-4P4T2 for male NPT. The 1/8 in. size uses SS-2P4T2 and the 1/2 in. P6T series has its own codes. Optional handle colours (BK, BL, RD) and O-ring materials (KZ, TB, TE, TN) are suffixes in the catalog.

Swagelok is the American maker of tube fittings and small-bore valves, best known for its two-ferrule compression tube fitting. Fred A. Lennon and Cullen B. Crawford founded it in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 1947 as Crawford Fitting Company to make that fitting. Lennon bought the whole business and the patent in 1948, and the company has been based in Solon, Ohio, since the mid-1960s.

A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, "SS" is 316 stainless steel, "810" means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and "-6" is a union. A suffix such as "-8" adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and "M0" marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.
