Brand:

Samson 3296 Series 290 ANSI Angle Control Valve

Description

SAMSON Type 3296 ANSI angle control valve, NPS ½ to 8

The SAMSON Type 3296 is the ANSI-pattern angle control valve of Series 290. It is specified in valve sizes NPS ½ to 8 and pressure Classes 150 to 900, with a temperature window from -325 to +842 °F (-198 to +450 °C). It is aimed at process engineering applications with high industrial requirements, and it is the usual choice when a project is specified to ASME/ANSI flanges, Class ratings and Cv sizing rather than to DIN/PN. Seven Star LLC supplies SAMSON control valves in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

The 3296-1 is the valve with a Type 3271 pneumatic actuator and the 3296-7 uses a Type 3277 actuator that accepts an integral positioner. A 3296-2 electric version is available on request, and a 3296-3 hand-operated version with a Type 3273 actuator exists for valves with up to 30 mm rated travel.

Principle of operation of the 3296 angle valve

The medium flows through the valve in the direction of the arrow, and the plug position sets the free area between seat and plug. A clamped-in seat allows quick service, and the modular layout lets the same body take metal-seated, soft-seated, balanced or flow-divider trims. The version with a bellows seal carries a test connection so that the stainless bellows can be monitored.

As with the other Series 290 and 250 valves, the actuator decides the failure position. A Type 3271 or 3277 actuator with the springs arranged to extend the stem closes the valve on air loss, while the retracting arrangement opens it. Accessories follow IEC 60534-6 and NAMUR recommendations, so positioners, limit switches and solenoid valves from many suppliers can be mounted.

Cv and KVS coefficients of the Type 3296

The datasheet lists both Cv and KVS so that ANSI and metric sizing sheets can be matched. The conversion visible in the table is approximately KVS = 0.86 × Cv.

Case Cv KVS
Class 150 to 600, without divider 0.12 to 650 0.1 to 560
Class 150 to 600, flow divider ST 1 4.2 to 570 (Cv-1) 3.6 to 490 (KVS-1)
Class 900, without divider 0.12 to 570 0.1 to 490
Class 900, flow divider ST 1 4.2 to 570 (Cv-1) 3.6 to 490 (KVS-1)

The sizes NPS ½ to 1½ take the smallest coefficients (from Cv 0.12), while NPS 8 carries the highest Cv values. Seat diameters of 6/8, 12, 24, 31, 38, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 150 and 200 mm are used, and some coefficients are also available with a balanced plug.

Materials of the 3296

The cast carbon-steel grades cover most hydrocarbon work: A216 WCC for general service, A352 LCC for low-temperature service down to -46 °C, and A217 WC6 for high-temperature service. The stainless grades A351 CF8M and CF3M serve corrosive media and cryogenic service. Seat and plug are 1.4006/1.4404 in steel bodies and 1.4404 in stainless, guide bushings are 1.4112 (2.4610 in stainless), and the soft seal is PTFE with 15 % glass fiber. Stellite facing or a solid Stellite plug can be specified. Insulating sections and bellows seals use the matching forged or cast materials such as A182 F12 Cl. 2 or A182 F316.

Differences between the 3296 and the DIN Type 3256

Feature Type 3296 Type 3256
Standard ANSI: NPS, Class, Cv DIN: DN, PN, KVS
Size range NPS ½ to 8 DN 15 to 300
Pressure Class 150 to 900 PN 16 to 400
Temperature range -198 to +450 °C -196 to +550 °C
Series 290 250

The two valves share the principle, actuators and accessories. The 3296 is the one to quote when the specification, flange drilling and nameplates must follow ANSI.

Selection and ordering checklist for the 3296

  • Valve size NPS and Class, end connection (flanged or butt-weld) and body material.
  • Service fluid, temperature range, and pressures at minimum, normal and maximum flow, preferably with Cv requirement.
  • Seat-plug seal, leakage class, characteristic and whether flow divider or balanced plug is needed.
  • Insulating section, bellows seal or heating jacket where required.
  • NACE compliance if the fluid is sour.
  • Actuator type (3296-1 or 3296-7), air supply, fail-safe direction and accessories.

Installation and maintenance of the 3296

Fit the valve with the arrow in the flow direction and keep the bonnet area free for actuator removal. Torque flange bolts in a cross pattern, mind the gaskets specified for the Class rating and flush the line before the first stroke so that weld debris does not damage the seat. In service, the quick-service clamped seat shortens maintenance outages. Keep packing, bonnet gasket and trim spares, and note the nameplate data when ordering.

Typical 3296 duties in Oman and the GCC

ANSI angle valves are widespread in oil and gas facilities where specifications follow ASME standards: wellhead and separator pressure letdown, gas dehydration and compression recycle lines, and refinery units where the licensor documents are in Class and Cv terms. They are also used in power and desalination plants built to ANSI piping classes. The ability to choose LCC bodies for cold service, high-temperature WC6 bodies and NACE-compliant versions suits the range of conditions across the region.

About brand

SAMSON is a German manufacturer of control valves, actuators, positioners and self-operated regulators. Hermann Sandvoss founded the company in Düsseldorf on 1 April 1907, and its first important product was a thermostatic valve that controlled temperature without external power. After moves to Mannheim, SAMSON settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1916, where SAMSON AG is still headquartered.

Seven Star LLC supplies Samson control valves, pneumatic actuators and positioners to process plants in Oman, including the types listed on this page and their replacement units.

  • 1907: Hermann Sandvoss founds the company in Düsseldorf.
  • 1909: It is re-established as SAMSON Apparatebau GmbH.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types

Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.

Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.

Where Samson valves are used

Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need

Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:

  • Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
  • Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
  • Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter

We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.

Facts checked against SAMSON's corporate chronicle and press material, October 2026.
