Copeland ZPD Digital Scroll Compressor (R410A)

Overview

The Copeland ZPD range is the R410A member of Copeland’s digital scroll family, a group of hermetic scroll compressors that provide stepless capacity modulation from 10% to 100% of nominal capacity without a variable speed drive. Nine models from the 5 hp ZPD61KCE to the 15 hp ZPD182KCE deliver 13.2 kW to 39.0 kW of cooling at EN12900 conditions, and tandem configurations extend the range further. Because the Copeland ZPD follows the load continuously instead of switching on and off, it holds supply air or chilled water temperature closely, improves comfort and saves energy in systems whose load and operating conditions vary over a wide range.

Operating Principle

A scroll compressor compresses refrigerant between a fixed scroll and an orbiting scroll that trap pockets of gas and move them towards the centre, reducing their volume. The Copeland ZPD adds a mechanical unloading feature: a small external solenoid valve, visible on the shell, controls a chamber above the fixed scroll. When the valve is de-energised the scrolls are held together and the compressor pumps at full capacity; when it is energised the fixed scroll lifts slightly, the scrolls separate axially and the compressor runs unloaded while the motor keeps turning. By repeating loaded and unloaded periods within a fixed cycle time, the system controller sets an average capacity anywhere between 10% and 100%.

Copeland highlights that this approach involves no complex electronics, so there are no EMI or EMC problems, and it is described as a quasi-drop-in solution for fast time to market with easy installation and maintenance. Because the motor speed does not change, the modulation has no impact on the mechanical balance of the system: no new vibration or resonance frequencies appear, and frames and piping do not need to be redesigned.

Engineering Design of the Copeland ZPD

The Copeland ZPD uses the vertical hermetic shell, compliant scroll set and three-phase motor of the Copeland Scroll family, with brazed stub connections for suction and discharge. Suction stubs range from 7/8 inch on ZPD61KCE to ZPD91KCE, through 1 1/8 inch on ZPD104KCE and ZPD122KCE, to 1 3/8 inch on ZPD137KCE to ZPD182KCE. Oil charge is between 1.8 and 3.3 litres, and net weights run from about 40 kg to 67 kg depending on frame size. The standard motor version is TFD for 380–420 V, three phase, 50 Hz.

Copeland specifies maximum allowable pressures of 28 bar(g) low side and 43 bar(g) high side for the ZPD42 to ZPD91 models, and 29.5 bar(g) low side and 45 bar(g) high side for the ZPD103 to ZPD182 models. The brochure publishes separate R410A operating envelopes for the ZPD34–91 and ZPD104–182 frames at 10 K superheat, and the selected operating point should be checked against them. Sound pressure levels at 1 m are 63 to 69 dB(A) in free field conditions, comparable with fixed-speed scroll compressors of the same size.
