Donaldson HRC-T 0220-22000 Hydrogen Dryer and De-Oxo Unit
Description
A hydrogen purification skid with De-Oxo unit and heat-regenerated dryer
The Donaldson HRC-T removes moisture, oxygen, liquid and solid particulates from hydrogen. The skid contains a pre-filter, a De-Oxo unit with a catalyst that converts oxygen and hydrogen to water, a two-vessel heat-regenerated adsorption dryer and an afterfilter. It is designed for nominal hydrogen flows up to 22,000 Nm3/h at 16 to 46 bar, and residual water and oxygen content of under 5 ppm each can be achieved depending on sizing and inlet impurities.
The regeneration flow is taken from the main stream, heated, cooled and fed back, so the sheet claims zero loss of hydrogen and 100 percent of the inlet flow at the outlet. The system is assembled on a skid, uses UltraPleat media in its filters and is described as suitable and CE marked for ATEX Zone 2.

Process stages
Hydrogen enters at the wet gas inlet and passes the pre-filter, a preheater and the De-Oxo catalyst. The catalytic reaction is exothermic, so a precooler and separator cool the gas before it reaches the pressure control valve and the adsorption dryer. One adsorber dries while the other is regenerated with a heated partial stream, and a cooling step follows before the vessels switch.
The dried hydrogen then passes an afterfilter that retains desiccant dust. The sheet names green energy (hydrogen, CO2 and biogas), the gas industry, environmental technology, plant construction and chemical and pharmaceutical users as the target industries.
Specification checks
This is an engineered package. Confirm the inlet oxygen, water content and pressure, the purity target and the area classification with Donaldson before ordering. Hydrogen service involves site safety rules and local approvals that sit outside the data sheet. The model range of 0220 to 22000 gives the nominal size; the type code is set by the flow.
- 0220: Main pipe DN 10; Height x width x depth 3,300 x 3,200 x 2,350; Weight 4,500
- 1100: Main pipe DN 40; Height x width x depth 3,800 x 3,500 x 2,500; Weight 6,200
- 5500: Main pipe DN 80; Height x width x depth 3,450 x 3,960 x 2,740; Weight 8,000
- 11000: Main pipe DN 100; Height x width x depth 3,500 x 4,500 x 3,000; Weight 11,000
- 22000: Main pipe DN 150; Height x width x depth 3,800 x 5,500 x 3,500; Weight 18,000
Dimension and weight columns follow the order printed in the sheet; the sheet lists them without units, and the values are in the millimetre and kilogram range. Operating temperature is 5 to 50 C, ambient 5 to 40 C and installation is indoors. At nominal conditions the purified hydrogen has under 1 ppm water (about -52 C dew point) and under 2 ppm oxygen.
How to size an HRC-T package for your hydrogen stream
Sizing starts with the gas, not with the model number. The type code of the HRC-T follows the hydrogen flow, so the first figure to fix is the real flow your plant will send to the skid, including any future expansion you want the package to carry. Next comes the operating pressure, which must sit inside the range given in the specification table. The inlet condition matters just as much: the oxygen content and the degree of water saturation decide how hard the De-Oxo catalyst and the adsorption dryer have to work, and the achievable residual water and oxygen depend directly on them.
- Collect the inlet analysis for water and oxygen, and note whether liquid or solid particulates can reach the pre-filter.
- Define the purity you need at the outlet and check it against the nominal conditions printed on this page.
- Confirm the area classification of the installation room against the ATEX Zone 2 suitability stated in the sheet.
- Check that the floor space, height and weight of the selected size fit the indoor location.
Installation and commissioning considerations
The HRC-T is a skid, so most of the internal piping arrives assembled, but the site work around it still decides how well it performs. Plan the wet gas inlet and the dry gas outlet connections, the electrical supply to the controller and the routing of the potential-free alarm and remote on/off signals into your plant control system before the skid arrives. Because the sheet calls for indoor installation within a stated ambient range, the room itself is part of the design.
During commissioning, the usual sequence is to verify tightness of all connections in line with your site hydrogen procedures, confirm controller settings, and then bring the gas through the pre-filter, De-Oxo stage and dryer while watching the regeneration cycle switch between the two adsorbers. Record the first outlet readings as a baseline for later comparison.
Operation in Gulf plant conditions
Hydrogen projects in Oman and the wider GCC are often built near the coast or in desert industrial zones, where outdoor temperatures and dust levels are high. Since the package is specified for indoor use and a limited ambient band, a ventilated or conditioned building is normally required, and the controller enclosure rating should be compared with the dust and humidity inside that room. Precooler performance also depends on the cooling available on site, so check that your cooling arrangement can handle the heat released by the exothermic De-Oxo reaction on hot days.
For routine care, follow the Donaldson manual for inspection of the pre-filter and afterfilter, monitor outlet dew point and oxygen trends, and keep a log of alarms and regeneration behaviour. A slow drift in outlet quality is often the first sign that inlet conditions have changed.
What to include in your RFQ
A complete enquiry lets the package be checked properly. Send the hydrogen flow, operating pressure and temperature, inlet water and oxygen content, required outlet purity, area classification, available electrical supply and the installation room details. Mention the industry and process the dry hydrogen will feed, and any local approval requirements that apply to your site.
