Gewiss GW70320M Rotary Isolator 80A 4P IP66/IP69

GW70320M is an enclosed rotary isolator switch from the Gewiss 70 RT HP range: 80 A, four poles, rated insulation voltage 690 V ac, in a surface-mounting aluminium enclosure with a black lockable control knob. The enclosure is rated IP66/IP69 and IK11 (IK08 for the knob), and the isolator is accepted for AC-21A, AC-22A and AC-23A duty at 80 A, 415 V.

Gewiss describes 70 RT HP as a complete offer of rotary isolator switches from 16 A to 160 A, available in boxes of insulating material and aluminium, in control or emergency versions. This code is the control version in aluminium, which gives the highest mechanical resistance (IK11) of the family and is intended for demanding outdoor and industrial settings.

The knob can be padlocked in the ON and OFF positions with up to three padlocks, which supports lock-out/tag-out routines for maintenance on motors, pumps and conveyors. The conditional short-circuit current at 415 V is 6 kA, so the upstream protective device must keep the let-through within that limit.

This is the 80 A four-pole aluminium control version. The same range includes insulating-box versions, emergency versions, DC photovoltaic versions (GW70253 on this site is a 16 A DC type) and board or DIN-rail mounting models up to 1000 A. Pick by current, pole count, enclosure material and control or emergency function.

Make sure the load fits the stated AC-23A category: that rating covers switching of motors and other highly inductive loads at 80 A, 415 V; it does not replace a short-circuit protection device.

Installation and operation notes

Drill only at the marked drilling points and use cable glands rated for IP66/IP69 so the enclosure rating is kept. Terminal capacity is 2.5-25 mm2.

Fit padlocks to the knob for lock-out procedures; add the auxiliary contact (one per side, maximum two) for interlocking or status feedback.

Derived load check: at 415 V three-phase, 80 A corresponds to about 57 kVA of apparent power (square root of 3 x 415 V x 80 A) and, at a power factor of 0.85, about 49 kW; a motor of that size is a typical load for a local isolator of this rating. These are calculations, not datasheet ratings, so always check the motor full-load current, which can differ with efficiency and voltage.

Aluminium IP69 isolators are a common choice at the point of use on desalination, water-pumping and oil and gas utilities, and on rooftop HVAC plant, where a maintenance isolator must resist sun, dust and hose-down.

The datasheet quotes -25 to +60 C, which fits most Gulf outdoor conditions, but confirm enclosure temperature rise in direct sun.

Installation and selection notes

The isolator is fitted close to the machine it isolates so that maintenance staff can lock it off. Fit the enclosure on a flat surface, use glands that keep the IP66/IP69 rating, and confirm that upstream protection limits the let-through to the 6 kA conditional short-circuit current at 415 V. Test the padlock arrangement at commissioning and label the isolator with the name of the machine it serves.
