Brand: Alfa Laval
Alfa Laval Unique SSV Single Seat Valve
Description
Alfa Laval Unique SSV single seat valve overview
The Alfa Laval Unique SSV is a pneumatically actuated single seat valve for hygiene-critical process lines. It is a modular range rather than one fixed item: the valve body, plug and actuator are configured to suit the duty, from a simple shut-off valve to a change-over valve with three connections. Seven Star LLC supplies Unique SSV valves in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
The platform is described by the manufacturer as proven in more than a million valves in service worldwide. The valve body is pressed from a single disc, which gives a strong, weld-free body with a smooth interior, and the design focuses on three things: cleanability, long seal life and low service effort.
What the configuration covers
One valve consists of one, two or three valve bodies, a plug, the sealing, an actuator and a clamp ring. Selecting those elements, together with the options listed below, defines the exact valve.

How the Unique SSV valve works
The valve is operated by compressed air from a remote location. The actuator moves the plug against or away from the seat. In a normally closed (NC) version the valve is closed at rest and air opens it; a normally open (NO) version works the other way round. The valve generally has two air ports for the actuator, and a change-over valve needs a third port.
Sealing is deliberately simple. O-rings are compressed to a defined amount and the plug lands on the seat with metal-to-metal contact. This limits wear on the elastomer and extends service life, because the seal cannot be over-squeezed. A double lip seal on the plug stem protects the product side against cross-contamination, and the static seal leak detection lets an operator see a failing seal before it affects the product.
As a change-over valve, one actuator steers flow between two lines. As a shut-off valve it simply opens or isolates one line. The two-step actuator option opens in stages, which smooths start-up flow, avoids pressure peaks and helps prevent a tank from being overfilled.
Hygiene and cleanability of the Unique SSV
A smooth interior with Ra ≤ 0.8 µm and no crevices leaves fewer places for residues and bacteria to collect. The plug is shaped to support efficient CIP, and the manufacturer notes that better CIP performance can shorten cleaning cycles and reduce the use of cleaning fluids, water and utilities.
The range is EHEDG certified and may carry the 3-A symbol, and it provides traceability in line with EU Food Regulation 1935/2004. These are manufacturer statements for the range, so request the certificate that applies to your exact configuration if an audit needs it.
Where the Unique SSV fits in the valve family
This valve is the standard single seat member of a wider Alfa Laval family. The Aseptic variant adds a hermetic diaphragm for sterile lines, while the Unique Mixproof, Unique Mixproof CIP and Unique Mixproof Process double seat valves allow two different fluids to pass through the same valve cluster. The ThinkTop V50 unit mounts on the actuator for position feedback and valve control.
Use a single seat valve for straightforward isolation and diversion. When two incompatible liquids must pass the same junction at the same time, move to a double seat mixproof valve instead.
Selection checklist for the Unique SSV
- Function: shut-off or change-over, and how many valve bodies the layout needs.
- Line size and connection: hygienic fitting standard that matches your tubing.
- Actuator action: NC, NO or two-step, plus fail-safe position on air loss.
- Seal material: HNBR or FPM, and PTFE plug seal where the product demands it.
- Process conditions: product, temperature, pressure and the CIP chemicals used.
- Controls: ThinkTop or a basic sensing unit, and the PLC signal format.
- Finish and actuator: 3-A bright exterior and fully maintainable actuator if needed.
Installing and maintaining the Unique SSV valve
Install the valve with the drain path in mind and make sure compressed air is clean, dry and regulated to the supply the actuator is designed for. Weld or clamp the fittings according to the hygienic standard in use, and run a CIP cycle through the valve during commissioning while stroking it so the plug and seat are cleaned in both positions.
Service work centres on the product-wetted seals and the actuator. Alfa Laval publishes short service videos for the maintainable actuator, the actuator bushing and the replacement of product-wetted seals, so these tasks are documented for plant maintenance teams. Keep a seal kit per valve type, and inspect the leak detection area during routine rounds.
Typical Unique SSV applications in Oman and the GCC
The manufacturer targets dairy, food and beverage, and personal care. In the Gulf these are active sectors: dairy and juice plants, bottled beverage and water lines, edible oil and sauce production, and cosmetics and detergent factories. High ambient temperatures put extra load on pneumatic supply lines and seals, and the dust and humidity of coastal sites favour sealed ThinkTop units and stainless exteriors.
Because valves sit in many positions in a plant, standardising on one platform reduces spare part inventory. The manufacturer points out that the few moving parts lower service needs and stock costs.
Information to send with a Unique SSV RFQ
- Quantity, line size and tube standard (for example metric, DIN, ISO or OD).
- Shut-off or change-over, with a sketch of the port arrangement.
- Actuator action and fail-safe state.
- Product, temperature, pressure and CIP chemicals.
- Seal material preference.
- Control unit and signal type, plus air supply pressure.
- Existing valve nameplate data if this is a replacement.

About brand
Alfa Laval is a Swedish engineering group built on three technologies: heat transfer, separation and fluid handling. Gustaf de Laval and Oscar Lamm founded the company in Stockholm in 1883 as AB Separator to make de Laval's continuous milk separator; the name Alfa-Laval was adopted in 1963. The company built its first heat exchanger in 1938, and today its plate heat exchangers, separators, pumps and valves are used in energy, marine, food, water and process industries. Group headquarters are in Lund, Sweden.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Alfa Laval gasketed, fusion-bonded and welded plate heat exchangers and hygienic pumps for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Units and spare plates or gaskets are matched from the serial number on the frame nameplate.

Where Alfa Laval equipment is used
In Oman and the GCC, Alfa Laval plate heat exchangers are common in district cooling plants, HVAC systems, power stations, desalination, oil and gas processing, refineries and marine engine rooms. Gasketed units suit duties that need regular cleaning or later capacity changes, while welded and fusion-bonded units handle higher pressures, temperatures and media that gaskets cannot. Hygienic LKH pumps serve dairy, juice and beverage plants.
Ordering Alfa Laval equipment: what we need
For spare plates and gaskets, send the serial number and model from the frame nameplate. Alfa Laval keeps the build record, which defines the plate material, pattern and gasket type for each position. For a new heat exchanger add both fluids, flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures, allowed pressure drop, design pressure and temperature, and connection standard. For an LKH pump send the model, size, impeller diameter, motor data and duty point.
