Overview

The Shinkawa VM-5W1 is a dual-power-supply instrumentation rack within the Shinkawa VM-5 series of machinery protection monitors, built to house up to ten monitor units for continuous vibration, displacement, and process-parameter monitoring on critical rotating equipment. It is specified by turbine, compressor, and pump operators across Oman and the GCC who need a redundant, rack-based monitoring platform for turbines, compressors, generators, and other high-value rotating machinery.

The “W1” designation reflects its defining feature: the rack accepts two VM-5Z power supply units operating in redundant configuration, so a single power-supply failure does not interrupt protection of the machine train it monitors — a requirement standard on turbine and compressor trains where continuous vibration surveillance is a safety-critical function.

Operating Principle

Individual monitor units installed in the VM-5W1 rack accept signals from eddy-current (FK/VK), casing vibration (CV/CA), LVDT, and speed (RD-series) transducers, processing them into continuous measurements of shaft vibration, displacement, acceleration, eccentricity, differential expansion, rotational speed, temperature, thrust position, and valve position depending on the modules installed. Each monitor unit outputs both a proportional analog signal — 1 to 5 VDC (250Ω impedance) or 4 to 20 mA DC (500Ω max load) — and two recorder outputs, feeding plant DCS and recording systems continuously.

Engineering Design of the Shinkawa VM-5W1

The rack is built in a standard 19-inch form factor with front-panel monitor displays for at-a-glance readings and rear-panel installation of relay, communication, and power modules. Each VM-5Z power supply accepts 85 to 264 VAC at 48 to 64 Hz, with VM-5Z1/4 units drawing up to 265 VA and the VM-5Z2 variant up to 135 W; an optional VM-5Z0 backup module can sustain full load for up to 0.2 seconds during a power interruption, bridging brief power events without a monitoring gap. Each monitor position provides eight relay points (H-DANGER1, H-ALERT1, L-ALERT1, L-DANGER1 and the equivalent set for a second channel) rated 250 VAC/5A or 30 VDC/5A for alarm and trip signaling.
