Samson Type 3599 Axial Globe Valve NPS 4 to 48, Class 150-2500

Description

Samson Type 3599 axial globe valve for high flow and critical service

The Samson Type 3599 is an axial globe valve, a compact control and on/off valve in which the plug sits directly in the pipeline axis rather than at a right angle to the flow. The datasheet lists nominal sizes NPS 4 to 48 (DN 100 to 1200), pressure ratings Class 150 to 2500 (PN 10 to 420) and a temperature range of –60 to +200 °C (–76 to +392 °F). Seven Star LLC supplies the Type 3599 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat. The valve is aimed at liquids and gases where high capacity, tight control and noise or cavitation protection matter at the same time.

An axial design keeps the flow path straight, so the valve reaches high Cv values for its nominal size and wastes little pressure drop in the body. The actuator mechanism is separated from the process medium, converts a rotary motion into a linear plug movement and delivers high thrust, which is why the Type 3599 can be driven by any 90° rotary actuator and still hold accurate control on large sizes.

Type 3599 trim designations: STD, LDB, Cavless and DobCage

There is no long ordering code to decode on the 3599; the main choice is the cage, which defines how the valve behaves hydraulically and acoustically. All four trims use a balanced plug, which lowers the thrust the actuator must produce.

Trim Cage design Typical purpose
STD Standard hole pattern; windows for on/off service to maximise capacity Non-critical control and on/off duty
LDB (lowdB) Reduced hole diameters Noise-reduced control and on/off
Cavless Specially shaped, double-drilled holes producing a Venturi effect Cavitation protection in liquid services
DobCage Two LDB cages with small spacing, hole patterns offset to each other Maximum noise reduction through a multi-stage effect; more stages on request

How the axial globe valve works

The medium passes through the valve in the direction of the arrow on the body. The plug position determines the open cross-section of the cage, so the cage geometry, not the body, sets the flow characteristic and the pressure-reduction behaviour. A rotating actuator stem keeps stem sealing emissions low, and the balanced plug lets a smaller actuator hold large pressure differences. In on/off valves without a cage the capacity can be even higher.

Where the Type 3599 fits in a plant

The Type 3599 sits in the control valve section of the Samson range alongside the Type 3591 and 3595 cage globe valves, which are already covered on this site. Choose the axial design when the line is large, the flow high and the space or weight budget tight. Samson lists all 90° rotary actuators as suitable drives; the positioner, limit switches and solenoid valves are selected with the actuator. For heavy-duty positioners and accessories see the Type 3730 and TROVIS 3793 families.

Selection checklist for a Type 3599

  • Fluid, phase and the cavitation or flashing risk, which decides between STD and Cavless.
  • Allowable noise level at the pipe wall, which decides between STD, LDB and DobCage.
  • Required Cv at minimum and maximum flow, then NPS and pressure class.
  • Flange type: ASME RF, ASME RTJ or DIN EN 558.
  • Body and trim materials for the medium, including NACE or low-temperature needs where applicable.
  • Metal-seat class IV or V, or soft seat for class VI shut-off.
  • Linear or equal percentage characteristic.
  • Rotary actuator type, fail-safe direction and positioner.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the 3599

Install the valve with the flow direction arrow on the body respected and with straight, supported piping, since large axial bodies can be heavy. The datasheet gives face-to-face lengths for each class; for example the NPS 4 Class 150 body is 432 mm and the NPS 6 body is 394 mm. Confirm the dimension table against the piping drawing, including actuator clearance, before release.

At commissioning, stroke the actuator over the full travel with the positioner, check the fail-safe action and record the leakage test result against the ordered class. Planned maintenance concentrates on the plug, the cage and the stem seal; keep a cage and seal kit for each installed trim type, and inspect cages in cavitating or abrasive service on a fixed interval.

Typical applications of the Type 3599 in Oman and the GCC

Large-bore, high-capacity control is common in gas export and compression lines, seawater and cooling water systems, power plant feedwater and condensate lines and downstream petrochemical headers. In these services, the Cavless cage addresses cavitating liquid let-down, and the LDB and DobCage cages address gas noise, which is a concern near occupied areas. The wide material list, including duplex and super duplex steel, helps with chloride-bearing seawater duty typical for coastal sites.

About brand

SAMSON is a German manufacturer of control valves, actuators, positioners and self-operated regulators. Hermann Sandvoss founded the company in Düsseldorf on 1 April 1907, and its first important product was a thermostatic valve that controlled temperature without external power. After moves to Mannheim, SAMSON settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1916, where SAMSON AG is still headquartered.

Seven Star LLC supplies Samson control valves, pneumatic actuators and positioners to process plants in Oman, including the types listed on this page and their replacement units.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types

Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.

Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.

Where Samson valves are used

Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need

Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:

  • Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
  • Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
  • Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter

We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.

Facts checked against SAMSON's corporate chronicle and press material, October 2026.
