SAMSON Type 3248 Cryogenic Control Valve DN 25-150
Description
SAMSON Type 3248 cryogenic valve: globe and angle control for very cold service
The SAMSON Type 3248 is a cryogenic control valve from Series 240, designed for liquefied gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, argon and LNG-type duties. It is offered as a globe or angle valve, and its top-entry construction lets the seat, plug and bellows be reached through the cryogenic extension bonnet once the actuator is removed, without cutting the valve out of the line. Seven Star LLC supplies Type 3248 valves in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
The suffix after 3248 describes the actuator on the valve:
- Type 3248-1: with a Type 3271 pneumatic actuator, 175v2 to 2800 cm² actuator area.
- Type 3248-7: with a Type 3277 pneumatic actuator, 175v2 to 750v2 cm², for integral positioner attachment.
This is the DIN version (DN 25 to 150). An ANSI version of the cryogenic valve is covered by a separate SAMSON datasheet.

Design and principle of the Type 3248
The medium flows in the direction of the arrow on the body, and the position of the plug relative to the seat sets the flow. The plug stem is fitted with a metal bellows so the process fluid never reaches the V-ring packing, which seals the stem to atmosphere and adjusts itself. Heat leakage into the cold line is kept small by the long cryogenic extension bonnet together with the bellows, which keeps the warm actuator and the packing far from the cold section. A test connection closed by a screw plug allows the stem seal to be checked for leakage at any time.
A cover plate on the extension bonnet allows installation in vacuum-insulated pipelines, air separation plants and associated plant. Optional RFID tags follow DIN SPEC 91406 for unique identification, and a safety manual is available for SIL-related systems.
Where the Type 3248 fits and related parts
The Type 3248 belongs to the SAMSON Series 240 family. Typical neighbours on a cryogenic project are the Type 3271 and Type 3277 pneumatic actuators, positioners and limit switches fitted to the IEC 60534-6-1 and NAMUR interface, and supply pressure regulators. For different duties, SAMSON also offers the Type 3351 on/off valve in the same series, and the Type 3510 micro-flow valve for very small flows. Only the Type 3248 is designed with the extension bonnet and bellows for temperatures down to −196 °C and below.
Type 3248 versions and dimensions
Face-to-face length L and weight without actuator for the stainless steel globe valve, PN 16 to 40:
| Nominal size | Length L (mm) | Weight (kg) |
|---|---|---|
| DN 25 | 210 | 17 |
| DN 40 | 251 | 30 |
| DN 50 | 286 | 30 |
| DN 80 | 337 | 55 |
| DN 100 | 394 | 96 |
| DN 150 | 508 | 131 |
The angle valve is shorter in face-to-face length (98 mm at DN 25 up to 236 mm at DN 150). The datasheet lists reference heights H1 of roughly 0.8 to 1.3 m (exact value depends on the actuator and configuration) and gives a service clearance height H7 of 900 to 1100 mm, so check headroom in insulated cold boxes.
Selection and ordering checklist for the Type 3248
- Fluid, minimum operating temperature (to −196 °C standard, −273 °C on request) and whether oxygen service needs an oil- and grease-free version.
- Required KVS from the IEC 60534 calculation; select DN and seat bore from the KVS table.
- Pressure rating PN 16 to 100 and body style (globe or angle, steel or aluminum angle body).
- Seat-plug seal and tightness: metal (IV), soft (VI) or high-performance metal (V).
- Fail-safe action: fail-close (actuator stem extends) or fail-open (stem retracts).
- Mounting angle: SAMSON recommends 15 to 25° to the horizontal; smaller angles need extra measures.
- Accessories: positioner, supply pressure regulator, handwheel, limit switch, vacuum jacketing.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance
Avoid supporting the pipe or bracket near the bellows nut. Keep the specified service clearance above the actuator so the extension bonnet assembly can be lifted out. After removal of the actuator, the bellows, plug and seat can be inspected through the top. Check the test connection during commissioning and at scheduled stops, and keep spare soft-seal rings and packing in stock for critical air separation units.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
Cryogenic control is used wherever liquefied gases are produced, stored or regasified: industrial gas plants, LNG terminals and small-scale LNG, ammonia and fertilizer facilities, and nitrogen or oxygen systems serving refineries and steel-related industry. In hot, dusty coastal conditions the main concerns are insulation integrity, humidity ingress on cold spots and clean instrument air for the actuator.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types
Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.
Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.
Where Samson valves are used
Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.
