SAMSON Type 3591 Cage Globe Valve ANSI NPS 10-32
Description
SAMSON Type 3591 cage globe valve: large ANSI control valve for demanding process duty
The SAMSON Type 3591 is a maintenance-friendly cage globe valve in the Series 590 range, built for process plants that need high capacity at high differential pressure. In the ANSI version covered here it spans NPS 10 to 32 and Class 150 to 900. Instead of a conventional plug, it uses a pressure-balanced piston that slides inside a cage, so the actuator force stays moderate even at high pressure drop. Seven Star LLC supplies Type 3591 valves in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
The Type 3591 can be operated three ways:
- Type 3591-1: Type 3591 valve with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator.
- Type 3591 with a hydraulic piston actuator.
- Type 3591 with a pneumatic piston actuator.
Versions with a Type 3591-3 hand-operated actuator or a Type 3591-4 electric actuator are available on request.

How the Type 3591 piston-and-cage design works
The piston moves inside a cage that is suspended in the valve body. Its position, together with the cage shape, defines the free flow area. Since the piston is pressure-balanced as standard, the line pressure acts on both sides and the stem thrust required to move it is much lower than for an unbalanced plug. The piston stem is joined to the actuator stem with a stem connector and sealed by PTFE or graphite packing. An external anti-rotation fixture on the yoke assembly keeps the piston stem from turning.
Two seat styles are offered. With the flanged seat, the seat is bolted into the seat bridge; with the clamped-in seat the cage and seat can be removed quickly for service. For noise-sensitive lines, a multi-hole cage or a Combi Cage can be selected, and the KVS tables are given separately for those cages.
Type 3591 temperature ranges by body material
With an insulating section the body temperature range widens, depending on casting:
| Body material | Range with insulating section |
|---|---|
| A352 LCC | −46 to +345 °C |
| A216 WCC | −29 to +425 °C |
| A217 WC6 | −29 to +500 °C |
| A351 CF8M | −46 to +500 °C |
Where the Type 3591 fits and related parts
Within Series 590 the Type 3591 is the ANSI cage valve for larger line sizes (NPS 10 and up). The Type 3595 is a related cage-guided globe or angle valve that covers smaller sizes and higher classes, up to NPS 32 and Class 2500, with specialised trims. Common companions to the Type 3591 are the Type 3271 actuator, the Type 3273 side-mounted handwheel, positioners, limit switches and solenoid valves mounted to IEC 60534-6-1 and NAMUR interfaces.
Selection and ordering checklist for the Type 3591
The datasheet’s selection steps and ordering text translate into the following checklist:
- Calculate CV (KV) to IEC 60534 for all flow cases, then choose valve size and CVmax from the coefficient tables (travel 60 to 400 mm).
- Choose body material from the pressure-temperature diagram.
- Decide on trim: metal seal or high-performance metal seal, characteristic, standard or noise-reducing cage.
- Pick the actuator: Type 3271 diaphragm, hydraulic or pneumatic piston.
- State fail-safe action: fail-close (stem extends) or fail-open (stem retracts).
- Define process data: density and temperature, flow, upstream pressure p1 and downstream pressure p2, each at minimum, normal and maximum flow.
- List accessories: positioner, limit switch, solenoid valve, handwheel.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance
Valves of NPS 16 (Class 300 to 900) and NPS 20 (Class 150 to 900) up to NPS 32 (Class 150) can be fitted with lifting eyelets because the assemblies are heavy; use them, and never lift the valve by the actuator. Install in the direction of flow indicated on the body. After commissioning, verify the stroke against the positioner and check the packing for leakage. For maintenance, remove the actuator and bonnet, lift out the cage and piston, and inspect the seat, seal ring and graphite gasket; keep a spare soft ring and gasket set on site.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
Large cage valves of this class appear in gas gathering and processing plants, feedwater and condensate systems at power and desalination stations, refinery and petrochemical let-down and recirculation lines, and pipeline pressure control. Heat, sand-laden air and high humidity put a premium on good coatings, clean instrument air, and sealed positioners.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types
Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.
Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.
Where Samson valves are used
Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.
