SAMSON Type 3286 Steam Conditioning Valve DN 50-300
Description
SAMSON Type 3286 steam conditioning valve: what it is and how the code reads
The SAMSON Type 3286 is an angle-style steam conditioning valve that lowers both the pressure and the temperature of superheated steam in one body. Mechanically it is a Type 3256 angle valve fitted with the ST 3 flow divider, so the cooling water is injected inside the trim instead of being sprayed against the pipe wall. Seven Star LLC supplies Type 3286 valves and the related Series 280 hardware in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
The Type 3286 designation is completed by a dash number that identifies the actuator on top of the valve:
- Type 3286-1: Type 3286 body with a Type 3271 pneumatic actuator, actuator areas from 350 to 2800 cm².
- Type 3286-7: Type 3286 body with a Type 3277 pneumatic actuator, actuator areas from 350 to 750v2 cm², built for an integrally attached positioner.
This page describes the DIN version of the DN 50 to DN 300 range. An ANSI version in NPS 2 to 12, Class 150 to 900, exists under its own datasheet.

How the Type 3286 conditions steam
The seat, plug with plug stem and flow divider ST 3 sit inside the body. The plug position sets the free area between seat and plug, and the steam reaches its highest velocity right at that throttling point. Cooling water arrives through the connecting pipe on the bonnet and is routed through holes in a clamping element to the flow divider. The fast steam meets the water on the inner wall of the divider, where a narrow wire-mesh coil breaks the water into a fine film and slows the steam down. Heat passes into the large mesh surface, the water evaporates, and the mixture leaves as a fine mist with a high steam content. Evaporation finishes a short distance downstream.
Because the steam velocity at the throttling point does not depend on the flow rate, the atomisation works across the whole load range. The water also never touches the valve body, which avoids thermal shock and erosion in the casting. A balanced plug is available so the actuator does not have to fight high differential pressure.
Where the Type 3286 fits in the plant
A steam conditioner is a pressure and temperature control loop, not a single device. A transmitter and controller hold the downstream pressure and temperature set points, the Type 3286 handles the steam, and a separate control valve meters the cooling water to the conditioner. Related Series 280 and Series 240 parts that you may see on the same project include the Type 3256 angle valve (the base design), the Type 3271 and Type 3277 actuators, and positioners and limit switches mounted to IEC 60534-6-1 and NAMUR interfaces.
Typical positions are turbine bypass lines, process steam let-down stations, header-to-header connections and auxiliary steam systems where superheated steam must be reduced to a lower pressure and a controlled temperature.

Selection and ordering checklist for Type 3286
The manufacturer states that steam conditioning valves need particularly careful sizing and that the final sizing is done by the manufacturer. Prepare the data below before asking for a quotation:
- Steam flow, inlet pressure and temperature, and required outlet pressure and temperature (minimum, normal and maximum load).
- Cooling water flow, pressure and temperature available at the conditioner.
- Required KVS from the IEC 60534 calculation, then DN and seat bore from the KVS table.
- Pressure class PN 16 to 160 and body material 1.0619 or 1.7357, checked against the pressure-temperature diagram.
- Fail-safe action: fail-close (actuator stem extends) or fail-open (actuator stem retracts).
- Actuator and accessories: Type 3271 or Type 3277, positioner, limit switches, solenoid valve, handwheel.
- Installation conditions and the insulating section decision for temperatures above 350 °C.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the Type 3286
Install the valve so the flow follows the arrow on the body. Check the water supply line and the connecting pipe on the bonnet before commissioning, and open the water control valve only when steam is flowing so the divider is never flooded. Face-to-face lengths follow DIN EN 558: for PN 10 to 40, 125 mm at DN 50, 155 mm at DN 80, 175 mm at DN 100, 225 mm at DN 150 and 275 mm at DN 200; PN 63 to 160 adds length (150, 190, 215, 275 and 325 mm for the same sizes).
During planned outages, inspect the flow divider mesh, seat and plug for wear and scale, check the packing, and verify that the plug travel matches the positioner calibration. Keeping a spare packing set and body gasket (graphite seal on a metal core) shortens shutdown time.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
Gulf power and desalination stations rely on steam conditioning during start-up, turbine trips and load changes, where a bypass station must pass full steam flow without damaging downstream piping. Refineries, petrochemical complexes and LNG facilities use the same principle for let-down of high-pressure steam into medium and low-pressure headers. High ambient heat, dust and humidity make a robust actuator, clean instrument air and a well-protected positioner important, and the insulating section keeps the actuator and accessories away from body heat.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types
Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.
Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.
Where Samson valves are used
Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

FAQ
Questions about the SAMSON Type 3286 Steam Conditioning Valve DN 50-300
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What is the difference between Type 3286-1 and Type 3286-7?
Both use the same Type 3286 steam conditioning body. The -1 version carries a Type 3271 pneumatic actuator (350 to 2800 cm²), while the -7 version carries a Type 3277 actuator (350 to 750v2 cm²) designed for integral positioner attachment.
02How is the Type 3286 related to the Type 3256 angle valve?
The datasheet describes the Type 3286 as largely corresponding to a Type 3256 angle valve fitted with the ST 3 flow divider. The divider is what mixes and evaporates the injected cooling water.
03What temperature can the Type 3286 handle?
The body without an insulating section is rated −10 to +220 °C, or up to 350 °C with high-temperature packing. With an insulating section or bellows seal the range extends to 400 °C for 1.0619 and 500 °C for 1.7357.
04Does the cooling water touch the valve body?
No. The water is fed to the flow divider through the bonnet connection and mixes with the steam inside the divider, so it has no direct contact with the body. This helps avoid thermal shock and erosion.
05Who sizes a steam conditioning valve?
Sizing needs full process data for all load cases. The datasheet states that the final sizing is performed by the manufacturer, so your RFQ should include steam and water data rather than only a DN.
