ABB ACS480-04-09A5-4 General Purpose Drive 4 kW 9.4 A
Description
A 4 kW ACS480-04 for 400 V machines
Machine builders and panel shops who need 4 kW on a 400 V supply will meet the ACS480-04-09A5-4 in the ACS480 hardware manual. The drive provides 9.4 A nominal output on frame R1, with a built-in brake chopper, EMC category C2 filter and Safe Torque Off in the basic unit. The 4 kW rating is the largest R1 size and a frequent choice for small machines.
The standard unit includes a front option slot and a side option slot, a standard ACS-AP-S assistant control panel, an RIIO-01 module with digital, analog and relay I/O plus EIA-485 and an embedded Modbus RTU fieldbus. Neighbouring ratings are listed in AC drives, and ABB’s wall-mounted general purpose drive is described on the ABB ACS580 drive page.

Choosing between nominal, light and heavy duty
Match 8.9 A (light duty, 4 kW) or 7.2 A (heavy duty, 3 kW) to the motor. The nominal figure is 9.4 A for 4 kW and the peak is 13 A. Mains current: 12.9 A without a choke, 9.4 A with one.
Protection data from the manual: gG fuses of 16 A (OFAF000H16) with a minimum short-circuit current of 128 A, or gR fuses of 40 A (170M2696). A miniature circuit breaker alternative is S 203P-B 16. The drive dissipates about 140 W and needs 57 m3/h of cooling air at 63 dB(A).
Hot or high-altitude sites need derating: 0.65 at 8 kHz, 0.48 at 12 kHz, 1% per degree from +50 to +60 degrees C and 1% per 100 m above 1000 m. At the default 4 kHz no switching derating is required.
Physical data: frame R1, 73 x 223 x 208 mm, 1.7 kg, free space 75 mm above and below. UL Type 1 kit adds hood and connection box (293 mm, 2.1 kg). Cable guidance: 100 m maximum for operation, and for EMC 30 m for category C3 and 10 m for C2 with the internal filter, or 40 m for C1, C2 and C3 with the optional external filter.
How the code is built
The designation splits into series ACS480, construction 04 (module), rating 09A5 and voltage code 4. The plain code gives the standard unit; plus codes ABB lists include L515 for the BIO-01 I/O module, L534 for BAPO-01 external 24 V DC, J429 for the ACS-AP-W Bluetooth panel and J425 for the ACS-AP-I panel.
The technical data chapter also lists induction, permanent magnet and SynRM motor control, a short-circuit proof motor output, natural convection on R0 and a cooling fan on R1 to R4 and a choice of an IEC type or a UL (NEC) type for North America.
Documents and quotation
Seven Star LLC can quote the ACS480-04-09A5-4 from Muscat. Attach the motor nameplate and the supply voltage to your RFQ. The linked ABB hardware manual (3AXD50000047392, revision F) supplies the ratings, fuses, losses, derating and dimensions shown.
Please confirm the ordering code, panel and fieldbus options, and the site derating before you order.

About brand
ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need
Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
