Timken Mounted Split Cylindrical Roller Bearings LS MS HS Series

Description

Split cylindrical roller bearing units for shafts that cannot be dismantled

Timken mounted split cylindrical roller bearings are bearing assemblies in which the inner race, outer race, cage and housing all split in two so that the unit can be fitted or replaced on the shaft without pulling couplings, gears, pulleys or other equipment. Timken states that installation and inspection times are therefore dramatically less than for solid bearings, and that the savings come from reduced downtime and lost production. To inspect a unit you remove the support cap and the top half of the housing, and every bearing part becomes visible.

The units are used where access to the shaft end is restricted: line shafting, conveyors and screw conveyors, fans and blowers, gearboxes, ball mill and kiln drives, crushers, dryer rolls, pump drives and marine propulsion shafts, all listed in the catalogue application matrix across mining, cement, power generation, pulp and paper, water treatment and refining. Each unit carries a machined brass cage with a one-piece cage clip, profiled rollers and a pillow block, flange, hanger or take-up support in high-strength cast iron.

Light series ratings by shaft size

The rows below are from the Timken catalogue bearing ratings table for the light series, where each shaft range shares one rating. The light series is the most commonly applied, offering good load and speed capability with the smallest section; the medium and heavy series have more load capacity and lower speed.

Light series shaft (d) Shaft in. Dynamic Cr kN Static Cor kN Axial Ca kN Max. speed rpm
35 to 40 mm 1 3/16 to 1 1/2 65 68 3.20 5,400
45 to 50 mm 1 11/16 to 2 83 87 3.60 4,630
55 to 65 mm 2 3/16 to 2 1/2 103 115 5.40 3,940
70 to 75 mm 2 11/16 to 3 138 161 7.60 3,310
80 to 90 mm 3 3/16 to 3 1/2 187 231 12.40 2,790
100 to 105 mm 3 11/16 to 4 288 366 16.00 2,340

Nomenclature, bearing type and selection

A Timken reference reads left to right: series prefix (LS, MS, HS), unit of measure (E imperial, M metric), shaft size, unit type and suffixes. For example LSE108BXHATL is a light series 1 1/2 in. bearing with housing and ATL seals; BX is an expansion bearing and BR a retained bearing, BXH or BRH adds the housing, and BXHS or BRHS adds the support. Suffixes cover clearances (C3, C5), end covers (EC), temperature probe holes (TE), grease escape (GE) and other options listed in the catalogue.

Choose the bearing type by the shaft arrangement. The retained type has integral flanges on the outer race to locate the shaft axially and take axial load, and only one retained unit should be mounted on a shaft, with no other locating bearing on that shaft. The expansion type takes radial load only and lets the rollers move across the outer race as the shaft expands or contracts. Life is calculated on radial load only, using L10 = (C/P) to the power 10/3, with a load factor Fz of 1.0 to 1.3 for steady loads rising to 2.0 to 3.0 for heavy shock. Confirm shaft tolerances and the seal arrangement for the environment.

About brand

The Timken Company is an American manufacturer of bearings and power transmission products. Henry Timken patented an improved tapered roller bearing in 1898 and incorporated the company in St. Louis in 1899; it moved to Canton, Ohio, in 1901 and is headquartered in North Canton, Ohio. Timken is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and describes itself as the world's largest maker of tapered roller bearings.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Timken bearings, mounted units and lubrication products for maintenance departments and workshops in Oman and the GCC.

Ordering Timken bearings: what we need

Give the complete part number stamped on the bearing, including any prefix and suffix. Inch-series tapered roller bearings have separate numbers for cone and cup, so quote both. If the marking is worn, measure bore, outside diameter and width and tell us the machine and shaft position. For housed units give the housing type, shaft size and locking method. State the quantity and any precision class or special clearance required.

Facts checked against Timken's SEC filings and published company histories, October 2026.

FAQ

Questions about the Timken Mounted Split Cylindrical Roller Bearings LS

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01Why use a split cylindrical roller bearing?
Because every component splits to the shaft, a unit can be installed or replaced without removing couplings or other equipment, which Timken says cuts downtime.
02What is the difference between BR and BX units?
The retained BR type locates the shaft axially and takes axial load; the expansion BX type takes radial load only and allows axial float.
03What series are available?
Timken lists light (LS), medium (MS) and heavy (HS) series in imperial and metric sizes, increasing in load capacity and decreasing in speed.
04What is the housing made of?
The supports and housings are ASTM 48A Grade 35 cast iron.
05Is Seven Star LLC a distributor of Timken?
No, Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat that quotes against the designation you provide.
