Cast-iron housed ball bearing units with set screw, eccentric collar or tapered bore locking

The Timken U Series ball bearing housed unit is a ready-to-mount UC, UEL or UK wide inner ring ball bearing inside a precision-machined cast-iron housing. The outer ring has a spherical outside diameter, which lets the insert seat in the housing and allows static shaft misalignment of plus or minus 3 degrees, and prevents the outer ring from turning. Bolt-hole spacing and base-to-centre height are stated as interchangeable with competitive units, which makes the series a common replacement on conveyors, fans and blowers, packaging and printing lines, glass and brick making and food processing equipment.

Timken offers six housing designs plus loose inserts in metric 12 to 140 mm and inch 1/2 to 4 inch sizes. The bearings are prelubricated, fitted with a bonded seal that carries a steel flinger, and are designed for normal operation between minus 20 and plus 100 degrees Celsius.

Reading the U Series part number and choosing the locking style

UCP205-16 breaks down as UC insert (set screw), 2 for the standard series (3 for heavy duty), P pillow block, 05 for the bore code and -16 for the inch bore in sixteenths, which is 1 inch. For metric units the code after the series is the bore divided by five from 04 upward: 01 is 12 mm, 02 is 15 mm, 03 is 17 mm and UELP211 is a 55 mm eccentric-collar pillow block. Take-up units are UCT, UKT and UELT, and flanged units UCF, UCFL and UCFC.

Set screw units are simple to fit and suit shafts that reverse. Timken lists set screw torques by size: 4 N-m for M6 screws on the 201 to 206 inserts, 9 N-m for M8 on 207 to 209, 18 N-m for M10 on 210 to 212 and 28 N-m for M12 on 213 to 218. The catalogue relubrication guide is: indoor service not normally required, outdoor two or three times a year, severe outdoor exposure monthly, and high contamination or washdown weekly, stopping when grease first purges from the bearing.
