Brand: M/D Totco
M/D Totco GM4 / GM4P Compound Pointer Hydraulic Indicators
Description
A compound pointer indicator for high-pressure pumping
The M/D Totco GM4 bracket-mount and GM4P panel-mount compound pointer indicators are used mainly to check pump pressures on service trucks in cementing, high-pressure hydraulic fracturing and acidizing operations. The primary pointer makes one full 360 degree revolution to the full-scale capacity, while a secondary pointer gives 4:1 resolution for small pressure changes by making four revolutions over the full capacity of the gauge.

When to choose a compound pointer
A single pointer gives a fast overview; the compound pointer adds a fine reading for stimulation work where small pressure changes matter, such as watching breakdown or injection pressure on a cementing or fracturing job. Select the capacity so the expected treating pressure lies in the upper-middle part of the scale, and decide between bracket mounting on the pump unit and panel mounting in a control cabin. Compare this model with the GM6A, which has a 6 inch single-pointer dial and lower standard capacities. The catalogue does not give dial size for the GM4, hose lengths or weights, so ask for them with the enquiry.

How the GM4 Hydraulic Pressure Indicator Works
The M/D Totco GM4 is a hydraulic indicator: the gauge itself is not connected directly to the high-pressure treating fluid. Instead, a diaphragm protector is screwed into the pump discharge line on a 2 inch NPT sub. The flexible diaphragm separates the process fluid, which may be cement slurry, fracturing fluid or acid, from a clean hydraulic fluid in a closed system. Pressure in the treating line deflects the diaphragm, which transmits the same pressure through a hydraulic hose to the indicator. In the gauge, a pressure element converts this pressure into pointer movement.
This arrangement has two practical benefits. Abrasive and corrosive treating fluids never reach the gauge mechanism, and the indicator can be mounted where the operator can read it, on a bracket on the pump unit (GM4) or in the panel of a control cabin (GM4P), away from the high-pressure iron.
Reading a Compound Pointer
On the GM4, the primary pointer travels once around the dial over the full capacity, so it shows the overall pressure at a glance. The secondary pointer travels four times around over the same range, so each of its divisions represents a quarter of the pressure of the primary scale. The operator reads the approximate value from the primary pointer and the fine value from the secondary pointer. This makes small changes, such as a gradual pressure rise during displacement or the pressure drop at formation breakdown, much easier to see than on a single-pointer gauge of the same capacity.
The hydraulic fluid in the system also damps rapid pressure pulsations from triplex and quintuplex pumps, so the pointers move steadily and can be read even while the pump is running at high rate. This is one reason hydraulic indicators remain common on cementing and stimulation equipment.
Choosing the Right GM4 Capacity and Mounting
- Capacity: choose from 4,000, 8,000, 12,000 or 16,000 psi, or the metric equivalents in kg/cm² and MPa, so that the normal working pressure is well below full scale but not in the lowest part of the dial.
- Units: match the dial units to the units used in the job programme and company procedures to avoid conversion errors.
- Mounting: GM4 for bracket mounting on the pump unit, GM4P for panel mounting in an operator console.
- Hose and protector: confirm hose length and the diaphragm protector and sub connection for the treating line.
Installation and Maintenance Notes
- Keep the hydraulic system completely filled; air in the hose or gauge causes sluggish or incorrect readings.
- Inspect hoses and fittings for damage and leaks before each job, and replace any hose that shows wear.
- Check the diaphragm protector for damage or erosion and clean it after pumping cement or proppant-laden fluids.
- Verify gauge accuracy against a calibrated reference at intervals defined by the operator’s maintenance programme.
- Never loosen any connection while the treating line is under pressure.
Typical Applications in Oman & the GCC
Well services in Oman and the wider GCC rely on cementing units, fracturing fleets and acid stimulation equipment, all of which need robust pressure indication at the pump. M/D Totco GM4 compound pointer indicators fit this work, and the hydraulic diaphragm protector design suits the abrasive and corrosive fluids used in these operations. Because the indicators are often exposed to sun, heat and dust on location, regular inspection of hoses, fluid fill and dial glass is part of good practice.

About brand
M/D Totco is a brand of drilling instrumentation and rig data systems owned by NOV. It combines two businesses from the 1920s: Martin-Decker, formed in 1928 when Elmer Decker and Frosty Martin bought out the Loomis Oilwell Control Company, and Totco, the Technical Oil Tool Corporation, founded in 1929 to make a mechanical drift recorder. Varco acquired both in 1990 and formed M/D Totco.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list M/D Totco instruments for drilling contractors and rig maintenance in Oman and the GCC.

M/D Totco product series
Weight instruments include the anchor type hydraulic weight indicators, the GM6A and GM6AP single pointer indicators and the GM4 and GM4P compound pointer indicators. The H6E is a tong line pull indicator with load cell.
Pressure products include the TRU-VUE GM14 unitized pressure gauge and the DBS107A and DBS112A pressure debooster systems, and the E-Totco is an electronic drift survey tool.
Hydraulic weight indicators read the dead line tension through a load sensor at the anchor and show hookload on a large dial in front of the driller. Debooster systems isolate gauges from drilling mud while passing the pressure signal.
Where M/D Totco instruments are used
Hookload and weight-on-bit reading, mud pump and standpipe pressure, tong torque and wellbore inclination surveys on drilling and workover rigs.
