Chromalox 6140 / 4140 Temperature and Process Controller

Description

Universal-input PID controllers in 1/16 DIN and 1/4 DIN panel sizes

The Chromalox 6140 / 4140 pair are the two panel sizes of the Chromalox 40 Series single-loop temperature and process controller. The 6140 is the compact 48 × 48 mm (1/16 DIN) unit and the 4140 is the 96 × 96 mm (1/4 DIN) unit. Both accept thermocouple, RTD and DC linear signals, run PID or ON/OFF control with heat/cool operation, and show the process value on a large LCD with a front panel sealed to IP65.

Extras include a ramping setpoint programmer, four selectable setpoints, a timer, an energy counter and diagnostics for loop break, heater break and shorted SSR output. The optional C-PWR configuration software lets one engineer program several units and store parameter sets.

Reading the 6140 and 4140 model code

Models follow the pattern 6140-C-RR0-00101-1-G, where each field selects one hardware option. The first letter is output 1: R is a 5 A 250 VAC relay, D is an SSR driver output above 10 V and C is a 4…20 mA analog output. The next three characters define outputs 2 to 4. On the 6140 they are R00 (one relay), D00 (one SSR driver), RR0 (two relays), DR0 (one SSR driver and one relay), RT0 (relay and triac), DT0 (SSR driver and triac) or RRR (three relays, 5 A in total).

The 4140 adds RRT, DRT and DRR blocks (three outputs including a triac or two relays). The five-digit options field switches on extra inputs and communication, for example 00101 for one CT input and Modbus RS485, 00030 for three digital inputs, or 11251 on the 4140 for remote setpoint, retransmission, one CT, five digital inputs and RS485. The supply digit is 0 for 20…27 VAC/VDC or 1 for 100…240 VAC, and the closing field is blank or LF where the logic operations function is wanted. Custom builds carry a five-piece minimum on the sheet.

Choosing the 6140 or the 4140

Pick the 6140 where panel space is tight, such as heater control cabinets, small ovens and test rigs, and the 4140 where more inputs and outputs are needed on one controller, up to five outputs, five digital inputs, remote setpoint and an infrared sensor input. A CT input enables the heater break alarm for electric heating loops. For a standalone over-temperature function the Chromalox 50 Series limit controllers are the matching companion, as the datasheet itself notes.

Before ordering confirm the sensor type and range, the output type for the final control element, the supply voltage, whether Modbus RS485 is needed and the panel cut-out. Compare similar panel controllers in the controllers and data acquisition range, for example the JUMO diraTRON 104.

About brand

Chromalox is an American manufacturer of electric process heating, heat trace and thermal control products. The company was founded in 1917 by Edwin L. Wiegand and, according to its website, is today part of Spirax Group. Its catalog spans immersion and circulation heaters, tubular and strip heaters, heat trace cables and controls, and temperature and power controllers.

Industrial heaters and heat trace

The industrial range covers screw plug and flanged immersion heaters, over-the-side heaters, air and radiant heaters, steam generators and packaged process heating systems. Heat trace products include constant wattage, self-regulating and mineral-insulated cables, with thermostats, controllers and connection kits for freeze protection and process temperature maintenance.

Controls and requesting a quote

Controllers run from single-loop temperature and process controllers to SCR power controllers and heat trace controllers. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists selected Chromalox models for projects in Oman and the GCC. Send the full model code, voltage, kW or wattage and the fluid or application, and we will prepare a quotation from the Chromalox data sheet.
