Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 and 100/50 Charge Controller
Description
The Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 is a 30 A maximum power point tracking solar charge controller for 12 V and 24 V batteries, and the 100/50 is its 50 A sibling in the same datasheet. Both accept a PV array of up to 100 V open-circuit voltage, have Bluetooth built in and a VE.Direct port, and reach a maximum efficiency above 98 percent without a cooling fan.
Ultrafast MPPT with shading handling for small and medium solar systems
Victron states that an ultrafast MPPT improves energy harvest by up to 30 percent compared with PWM controllers and up to 10 percent compared with slower MPPT controllers, especially under a clouded sky. When partial shading creates more than one power point, the algorithm locks onto the optimum point. Full rated output is available up to 40 degrees C, and the controller derates when hot.
The charge algorithm is multi-stage and adaptive with eight pre-programmed algorithms chosen by a rotary switch, or fully programmable. Protections cover PV short circuit and reverse polarity, PV reverse current and over-temperature. A Smart Battery Sense or a BMV-712 Smart can send battery voltage and temperature over Bluetooth, and the controller can restart charging even from a battery discharged to zero volts or reconnect to a lithium battery with an integrated disconnect.

Sizing the array and battery bank
Keep the cold-weather open-circuit voltage of the string below 100 V and remember that PV voltage must exceed battery voltage plus 5 V to start. The datasheet warns that an array with a higher short-circuit current than 35 A (100/30) or 60 A (100/50) may damage the controller. If more PV power is connected than the nominal figure, the controller limits input power. Pair with a battery monitor such as the Victron SmartShunt IP65; other solar equipment is in solar power.
Default charge voltages are 14.4 V absorption and 13.8 V float on 12 V (28.8 V and 27.6 V on 24 V), all adjustable, and the controller compensates for battery temperature at -16 mV per degree C on 12 V and -32 mV per degree C on 24 V. It stores 46 days of trend data covering battery voltage, current and temperature, load output current, PV voltage and PV current. The power terminals take 16 mm2 (AWG6) cable, so check cable size and fuse for the 50 A model. Victron also publishes an overview datasheet comparing its BlueSolar and SmartSolar charge controller ranges, which helps when a larger or smaller model is needed.

| MPPT 100/50 | 50 A | 700 W / 1400 W | 60 A |

About brand
Victron Energy is the Dutch maker of off-grid and backup power equipment: inverters, inverter chargers, battery chargers, solar charge controllers, lithium and lead batteries, and monitoring. Reinout Vader founded the company in the Netherlands in 1975 after rebuilding and improving inverters himself, and it is headquartered in Almere. In December 2012 ownership passed to his sons Matthijs, Franck and Erik Vader, and the company remains family-owned.

Reading the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000/70-50 model name
The name carries the main ratings: a 48 V battery system, 5000 VA inverter output, a 70 A battery charger and a 50 A AC transfer switch. Victron's documentation gives a 230 VAC output and continuous power of 4000 W at 25 °C, falling to 3700 W at 40 °C. The unit supports Victron's PowerControl and PowerAssist functions for use with a limited grid or generator supply.
