Victron Orion XS 1400 DC-DC Battery Charger IP65
Description
The Victron Orion XS 1400 is an adaptive DC-DC battery charger for dual-battery systems fed by an alternator, and it can also serve as a DC power supply with an adjustable output. It accepts 9 to 35 V and outputs 10 to 35 V at up to 50 A, so it works for 12 V and 24 V systems, and it is rated at 1400 W continuous at 28 V and 40 degrees C.
Controlled charging where a smart alternator or long cables drop the voltage
Victron explains that Euro 5 and Euro 6 smart alternators often deliver too low a voltage to charge a service battery fully, and long cables on boats and recreational vehicles cause voltage drops. The Orion XS regulates charging precisely while protecting the starter battery. Engine-shutdown detection starts the charger only when the alternator supplies power, and a configurable input undervoltage lockout stops it before the input battery is discharged too far.
The charge algorithm is a four-stage adaptive one with eight pre-programmed battery settings and fully programmable curves. The charge current is adjustable in 0.1 A steps through VictronConnect. Low-temperature shutdown protects lithium batteries. VE.Smart Networking can receive voltage, temperature and current data from a BMV, SmartShunt or Smart Battery Sense, and VE.Direct with DVCC links the charger to a GX device. Any number of units may be paralleled to increase current.

Choosing between XS 1400 and the 12/12 models
Select XS 1400 when the system is 24 V or when the input and output voltages are not both 12 V. The 12/12-50A and 12/12-70A are limited to a 9 to 17 V input and a 10 to 17 V output. Check the alternator output, cable run, fuse sizing and the lockout voltage that protects the starter battery. Note that synchronised charging is not supported with VE.Smart Networking. Reading the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000/70-50 model name
The name carries the main ratings: a 48 V battery system, 5000 VA inverter output, a 70 A battery charger and a 50 A AC transfer switch. Victron's documentation gives a 230 VAC output and continuous power of 4000 W at 25 °C, falling to 3700 W at 40 °C. The unit supports Victron's PowerControl and PowerAssist functions for use with a limited grid or generator supply.
