Elcometer 415 Paint and Powder Coating Thickness Gauge

Description

A fast, powder-resistant gauge for coatings on thin and smooth industrial parts

The Elcometer 415 is a handheld digital coating thickness gauge with a built-in probe, designed for dry film thickness on smooth, thin paint and powder-coated surfaces. Elcometer states a measurement range of 0 to 1000 micrometres (0 to 40 mils), a reading rate above 60 per minute and a rugged, powder-resistant housing equivalent to IP64. A large colour display rotates through 360 degrees so the value can be read at any measuring angle, and on-screen statistics show the number of readings, the average and the lowest and highest values. FNF models switch automatically between ferrous and non-ferrous substrates.

The Model B gauges send readings by USB and the Model T gauges add Bluetooth for transfer to a PC, Android or iOS device and the ElcoMaster app, where reports can be generated. A calibration test certificate is supplied as standard with every gauge.

Selection and use

Choose a ferrous-only gauge when every part is steel or iron, and an FNF model when aluminium or other non-ferrous parts are also tested. The 415 is intended for production lines and QA stations measuring cured paint or powder on thin sheet and smooth components. For heavy protective coatings on blasted steel, where a plug-in probe and a wider range are needed, the Elcometer 456, which takes plug-in probes, is the better fit; other instruments are listed under Specialty Thickness Gauges. Check the minimum substrate thickness and the 2-point calibration procedure before use, because readings on thin or curved parts depend on both.

How the Elcometer 415 works

The Elcometer 415 has a probe built into the gauge. When the probe touches a coated surface, the gauge measures how far the probe is from the metal under the coating. On steel it uses a magnetic method, and on non-ferrous metals such as aluminium it uses an eddy current method. FNF models pick the right method on their own. The result is the dry film thickness of the paint or powder coat, shown on the colour display.

Where the Elcometer 415 is used

  • Powder coating lines
  • Paint shops for thin coatings
  • Smooth steel and aluminium parts
  • Incoming and final inspection
  • Quality records for coated products

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the Elcometer 415

Insert the batteries and set the date. Zero the gauge on an uncoated sample of the same metal, then check it with a known foil close to the expected thickness. Hold the probe square to the surface and take several readings across the part. Keep the probe tip clean and store the gauge in its case.

About brand

Coating inspectors carry Elcometer gauges on painting and blasting jobs to record that a protective coating has been applied to specification. The company was founded in 1947 in Manchester, United Kingdom, and works in coating inspection and thickness gauges. Seven Star LLC lists the Elcometer 456 separate coating thickness gauge and supplies Elcometer instruments and probes to inspection teams in Oman on inquiry.

Elcometer 456 coating thickness gauges

The Elcometer 456 measures dry film thickness. The separate version in our listing takes plug-in probes on a cable, so one gauge body can work with different probes. Probe choice follows the substrate: ferrous probes for coatings on steel, non-ferrous probes for coatings on metals such as aluminum, and dual probes for both. Probe scale and shape are chosen to suit the coating thickness and the access to the surface.

Ordering Elcometer gauges and probes: what we need

Send the gauge model letter and part number from the label, the substrate, the expected coating thickness range, the probe type and scale, and any accessories such as reference foils. If a test certificate from the manufacturer is required, say so in the request. Fabrication yards across the GCC usually name the inspection standard as well.
