NETZSCH NOTOS 3NS Three Screw Pump
Overview
The NETZSCH NOTOS 3NS is a self-priming three screw pump from the NOTOS® multi screw range of NETZSCH Pumps & Systems. It is built for continuous, low-pulsation transfer of non-abrasive, non-corrosive and lubricating liquids of low to medium viscosity — lube oil, control oil, fuel oil and similar media — and is described by the manufacturer as a true lightweight with a small footprint. The NETZSCH NOTOS 3NS combines a drive screw with two intermeshing driven screws, giving smooth flow with minimal turbulence and gentle product handling.
Seven Star LLC supplies the NETZSCH NOTOS 3NS to refineries, power stations, tank farms and process plants across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Our team helps buyers size the correct pressure stage, select materials and seal arrangements, and prepare the duty data NETZSCH needs to configure each pump for the job.
Working Principle
A screw pump is a rotary positive displacement machine. In the NETZSCH NOTOS 3NS, the central drive screw is coupled to the motor and transmits torque to the two driven screws through a thin hydrodynamic film of the pumped liquid rather than through timing gears. As the three screws rotate inside a close-fitting liner, sealed chambers form between the screw flanks and the bore and travel axially from suction to discharge. Because the chambers move continuously rather than opening and closing like valves, delivery is nearly pulsation-free and the pump runs quietly with low vibration.
The practical consequence is that the pumped medium itself lubricates the screws, which is why NETZSCH specifies the 3NS for lubricating liquids and notes that the 3NS and 2NS are not suitable for dry running. In return, the design needs no gearbox, has very few parts and offers good suction capability with a low NPSH requirement, making it a dependable choice for continuous supply and transfer duties where steady pressure matters.
Engineering Design of the NETZSCH NOTOS 3NS
NETZSCH optimised the screws using its High Efficiency Unique Design (HEUD) concept: precise tolerances, an optimised screw profile and nitrided screws in alloy steel or stainless steel. The housing takes a replaceable liner and can be supplied with port configurations such as top-top, side-top, front-top or in-line, with an optional heating jacket to hold viscous media at temperature. Nitrided internal bearing bushes support radial loads and help prevent start-up failures.
Under suction pressure only one mechanical seal is needed, and a magnetic drive is optional for leak-free service. Arrangements include foot-mounted, vertical, semi-submersible and a light top-tank version, while accessories cover internal or external relief valves, vibration and temperature sensors, API 682 cartridge seals and various API seal plans. Materials range from grey cast iron and chrome-nickel steel to duplex, super duplex and Hastelloy, and an optional upgrade brings the pump to API 676 requirements for oil and gas and petrochemical service.
Key Features
The NETZSCH NOTOS 3NS offers the following engineering advantages for continuous oil-handling duties:
- A three-screw design with one drive screw and two driven screws delivers continuous flow with very low pulsation and minimal turbulence.
- HEUD screw geometry and precise manufacturing tolerances give high volumetric efficiency and quiet, low-vibration running.
- The compact, lightweight construction gives a small footprint for skids, lube oil consoles and crowded pump rooms.
- A self-priming action and low NPSHr support safe operation under difficult suction conditions.
- A replaceable liner and nitrided internal bearing bushes simplify maintenance and reduce life cycle cost.
- A single mechanical seal under suction pressure, or an optional magnetic drive, keeps the sealing arrangement simple.
- Material options from grey cast iron to duplex, super duplex and Hastelloy suit a wide range of liquids.
- An optional API 676 configuration, with API 682 seals, meets oil and gas and petrochemical project specifications.
Industrial Applications
NETZSCH lists oil and gas mid- and downstream, environment and energy, and chemical, pulp and paper as the main fields for the NETZSCH NOTOS 3NS. In Oman that translates into lube oil and seal oil systems on compressors and turbines at gas processing plants, fuel oil forwarding and burner supply in power and desalination plants, and loading or circulation of lubricants and light hydrocarbons in refinery and terminal operations around Sohar, Duqm and Muscat. The manufacturer also highlights lubrication and control oil systems in power stations, where steady, low-pulsation pressure is essential.
For larger flows of heavier or slightly abrasive media, the same range offers the NOTOS 2NS, and plants that already run an ALLWEILER TRILUB TRL screw pump will find the three-screw principle familiar. For viscous sludges or solids-laden media, the NETZSCH NEMO BY NM038BY progressing cavity pump remains the better fit. Seven Star LLC supplies the NETZSCH NOTOS 3NS throughout the GCC and supports engineering contractors with selection, document packages and spare parts planning.
When selecting a NETZSCH NOTOS 3NS, engineers usually start from the required flow and discharge pressure, then confirm viscosity at the lowest operating temperature, because suction conditions and drive power both depend on it. For compact lube oil skids, the NETZSCH NOTOS 3NS is often compared with gear pumps such as the KRACHT KF80RF2-D15 gear pump; the screw pump wins where low noise and pulsation-free pressure are priorities.

NETZSCH pump families listed here
The manufacturer groups its pumps under three main names, and one of each is listed. NEMO is the progressing cavity line, here the NEMO BY in block construction, model NM038BY. TORNADO is the rotary lobe line, with the TORNADO T2. NOTOS is the multi screw line, represented by the NOTOS 3NS three screw pump for lubricating liquids. People searching for a NETZSCH screw pump may mean either NEMO or NOTOS, so the nameplate matters. These pumps are found in wastewater, food, chemical and oil and gas service, all present in the GCC.Ordering NETZSCH pumps and parts: what we need
