VERDERAIR VA50 Metallic Air-Operated Double Diaphragm Pump
Overview
The VERDERAIR VA50 metallic is a 2 inch air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pump from the Verderair VA industrial range, which Verder describes as the benchmark of its air diaphragm pumps. It delivers up to 568 l/min at a maximum discharge pressure of 8.4 bar, passes solids up to 6.3 mm, and handles liquids up to about 20,000 mPas. The metallic version is offered with aluminium, stainless steel or cast iron fluid sections and seven diaphragm materials, so one pump frame can be configured for fuels, solvents, oily water, paints, chemicals and slurries. Its fast-acting, non-stalling air valve on the VERDERAIR VA50 uses the supplied air efficiently, reducing compressed air consumption and energy cost for a given flow.
Seven Star LLC supplies the VERDERAIR VA50 metallic to oil and gas operators, refineries, tank farms, marine terminals and industrial plants across Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. We help customers in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm and Salalah build the correct VA50 order code, from body material to ball and seat elastomers, so the pump suits the fluid and the hazardous area classification on site.
Operating Principle
The VERDERAIR VA50 uses two flexible diaphragms connected by a common shaft. Compressed air is directed by the air valve to the back of one diaphragm, pushing it outward and displacing the liquid in that chamber through the discharge check valve. At the same time, the shaft pulls the opposite diaphragm inward, creating suction that draws liquid into the second chamber through its inlet check valve. At the end of the stroke the air valve switches, and the cycle reverses. The result is a reciprocating, positive displacement flow whose rate is set by air pressure and air volume, so the operator can control the pump simply with an air regulator.
Because the pump is driven only by air, it has no electric motor, no rotating seal and no heat-producing drive near the fluid, which makes it inherently suited to flammable and explosive atmospheres. The VERDERAIR VA50 can run dry without damage, primes itself dry to 2.5 m and wet to 5.5 m, and will stall safely against a closed discharge valve and restart when the valve opens. The Verder air valve is free of air lubrication, which means the exhaust air does not carry oil mist into the working area.
Engineering Design of the VERDERAIR VA50
The metallic VERDERAIR VA50 uses bolted fluid chambers for safe operation and easy maintenance, an important detail on transfer duties where clamp-band designs can leak under pressure. Fluid sections are available in aluminium, stainless steel or cast iron, and the air section is aluminium or stainless steel. Check valve seats can be Buna-N, Geolast, hardened stainless steel, Hytrel, Santoprene, Teflon or Viton, check valve balls are offered in acetal, Buna-N, Geolast, Hytrel, Santoprene, PTFE or Viton, and the diaphragms come in Buna-N, Geolast, Hytrel, Santoprene, Viton, two-piece PTFE/Santoprene and PTFE/EPDM overmolded construction. Liquid connections are 2 inch BSP or NPT threaded, or DN50 flanged DIN/ANSI, with a 1/2 inch NPT air inlet and a 3/4 inch NPT exhaust with muffler included.
An extended aluminium version is available whose inlet-to-outlet dimensions match Wilden and Aro aluminium pumps, which makes replacing an existing pump much easier because pipework does not have to be modified. The datasheet lists weights of 26.3 kg for the aluminium pump, 50.3 kg for stainless steel with an aluminium air section, 59 kg for cast iron and 61 kg for the all-stainless version, and the metallic VERDERAIR VA50 pumps carry ATEX marking II 2 GD c IIC T4.
Key Features
The VERDERAIR VA50 metallic is a versatile workhorse for general industrial transfer. Its main features are:
- Flow up to 568 l/min with 2 inch connections and a maximum discharge pressure of 8.4 bar.
- Fast-acting, non-stalling air valve that uses compressed air efficiently and lowers energy cost.
- Choice of aluminium, stainless steel or cast iron fluid section to suit fuels, solvents, water or chemicals.
- Seven diaphragm materials and a wide range of ball and seat elastomers for chemical and temperature compatibility.
- Can run dry without damage and is dry self-priming to 2.5 m, or up to 5.5 m when wetted.
- Passes solids up to 6.3 mm and handles viscosities up to about 20,000 mPas.
- Bolted chambers, oil-free air valve and simple design that keep downtime and spare part needs low.
- ATEX II 2 GD c IIC T4 marking for use in hazardous areas.
Industrial Applications
The VERDERAIR VA50 is widely used for transferring diesel, crude samples, lubricating oils, oily water, solvents and paints, emptying drums and IBCs, draining sumps and interceptors, and moving slurries and sludge in mining and construction. On oil and gas sites the VERDERAIR VA50 is a common choice for chemical injection tank filling, slop oil handling and portable transfer, because no electrical supply is needed and the pump is safe in zoned areas. In water treatment the stainless steel version transfers sodium hypochlorite and other chemicals with suitable elastomers, and in manufacturing it moves adhesives, inks and coatings.
Seven Star LLC supplies the VERDERAIR VA50 to upstream and downstream facilities in Oman, marine terminals in Sohar and Salalah, and process plants in the Duqm special economic zone. For smaller flows the Verder VA25 air-operated double diaphragm pump uses the same air valve platform, while sealless metering or dosing duties are usually better served by the Verderflex Rapide peristaltic hose pump or a Grundfos DME digital dosing pump. Our Muscat engineers can advise which technology fits each line.
