CMP Sapphire SHDSS 316L Stainless Steel Cable Cleat

Description

Overview

The CMP Sapphire (type SHDSS, single heavy duty stainless steel) is a hinged cable cleat fabricated from 316L stainless steel and fitted with a polymer liner as standard. It is designed and tested to IEC 61914 for cables held in single or parallel (flat) formation under high short-circuit conditions, and it covers cable diameters from 19 mm to 150 mm in thirteen sizes. Where an aluminium cleat is adequate for many onshore installations, the CMP Sapphire is aimed at the harshest environments: offshore platforms, ships, coastal plants and chemical sites where corrosion resistance and creep strength decide how long a cable support system will last.

Seven Star LLC supplies the CMP Sapphire to marine, offshore, power and industrial projects in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. In the Gulf climate, with high humidity, salt spray and surface temperatures that swing sharply between day and night, stainless steel cleats with a liner protect both the cable and the support structure over the full design life of the installation.

Working Principle

A cable cleat must do two jobs at very different force levels. In everyday service it holds the cable in position as it expands and contracts with load, and on vertical runs it carries part of the cable weight. During a fault, it must resist the electromagnetic forces that push conductors apart. The CMP Sapphire is tested for both. In the IEC 61914 short-circuit tests listed on the data sheet, it withstood 105 kA peak (50 kA r.m.s.) for 0.1 s in multicore formation, for both one and two short circuits at 600 mm fixed cleat centres, and in parallel formation at 105 mm cable centres it withstood 110 kA peak for one short circuit and 109 kA peak for two, both at 50 kA r.m.s.

The polymer liner is central to the design. It helps restrain the cable within vertical applications, provides a layer of protection between sheath and steel during thermal elongation, and prevents chafing caused by differential movement such as that found in marine and offshore structures. The liner also gives extra protection to the cable during short-circuit fault conditions. Standard liners are classified as low smoke and fume (LSF), zero halogen (LS0H) and phosphorus free.

Engineering Design of the CMP Sapphire

The body of the CMP Sapphire is fabricated from 316L stainless steel, chosen for its high creep strength and excellent corrosion resistance. The hinge opens fully, so the installer can lay the cable into the cleat rather than threading it through, and then closes and secures the cleat with the mouth piece bolt. This makes the CMP Sapphire practical on long horizontal ladder runs and on vertical risers where the cable is already in place.

The base has one M12 and two M10 fixing clearance holes, so the cleat can be fixed with a single bolt or with two bolts depending on the support, whether that is cable ladder, strut channel or steelwork. Lateral load test results range from 3.5 kN to 14.5 kN and axial load from 0.2 kN to 0.9 kN across the sizes, the cleat passes the very heavy impact test, and the material passes a 120 second needle flame test. The temperature for permanent application is -60 °C to +60 °C. Coatings can be ordered by adding EC (epoxy), PC (polyester) or TC (thermoplastic) to the part number, for example SHDSS046051EC.

Key Features

The design points that set the CMP Sapphire apart are:

  • Third-party certification to IEC 61914, IEC type 6.1.3 composite heavy duty stainless steel cleat.
  • 316L stainless steel body with high creep strength and corrosion resistance for marine and offshore duty.
  • Full-opening hinge for laying cables in place, closed with a single mouth piece bolt.
  • Standard polymer liner classified LSF, LS0H and phosphorus free.
  • Short-circuit withstand of 105 kA peak multicore and up to 110 kA peak in parallel formation.
  • Thirteen sizes for single or parallel formation from 19 mm to 150 mm cable diameter.
  • Combined single M12 or two M10 bolt fixing for flexibility on different supports.
  • Operating temperature of -60 °C to +60 °C.

Industrial Applications

The CMP Sapphire is used to restrain single-core and multicore power cables on offshore platforms, FPSOs and vessels, in LNG and gas processing plants, at desalination and power stations on the coast, in tunnels and on bridges, and in substations and data centres where the client specifies stainless steel cable management. It is a good fit on generator and transformer cable runs and on feeders to drives such as the ABB ACS355 machinery drive, and on circuits protected by devices like the SEL-751 feeder protection relay, where cables must stay secure through a fault.

In Oman, the CMP Sapphire is relevant to coastal and marine sites at Sohar, Sur, Duqm and Salalah, to offshore facilities in Omani waters and to water and power plants along the Batinah coast, where salt-laden air would quickly attack mild steel and uncoated supports. Seven Star LLC supplies the CMP Sapphire with fixing packs and isolation pads to prevent galvanic corrosion against other metals, and our Muscat team can help select sizes and spacing from the cable data and fault level. For the cable entries at the equipment end, see glands such as the Hawke 501/421 cable gland.

About brand
CMP Products makes cable glands and cable cleats, and little else. Founded in 1957 and based in Cramlington, United Kingdom, the company is a name that appears on hazardous-area cable schedules for oil, gas and power projects. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies CMP cable glands for explosive atmospheres to contractors in Oman, including the E1FW and the Triton T3CDS listed on this page.

CMP cable glands listed here

The T3CDS Triton is a gland for armored cables with a compensating displacement seal, a design that sets the inner seal correctly across the cable diameter range, and an integral deluge seal. CMP lists it as Ex db, Ex eb, Ex nR and Ex ta, with IP66, IP67 and IP68 ratings. The E1FW is the explosive atmosphere gland for steel wire armored (SWA) and aluminum wire armored (AWA) cable.

Ordering CMP glands: what we need

A gland is sized to the cable, so send the cable type and three dimensions: inner bedding diameter, outer sheath diameter and armor wire size. Add the entry thread and size (metric or NPT), the gland material (brass, nickel-plated brass or stainless steel) and accessories such as locknut, earth tag, sealing washer and shroud. GCC project specifications usually name the certificate required.
