CMP CW Industrial Cable Gland for SWA and AWA Cable

Description

Overview

The CMP CW is a single seal industrial cable gland for steel wire armour (SWA) and aluminium wire armour (AWA) cables. It is built for safe-area, non-hazardous installations, where the gland has to clamp and earth the armour, retain the cable mechanically and keep water and dust out of the equipment, but where no explosion protection certification is needed. The CMP CW uses a controlled outer load retention seal on the cable sheath and metal-to-metal clamping of the armour, in a heavy duty body made from brass, nickel plated brass, stainless steel or aluminium.

Seven Star LLC supplies the CMP CW to electrical contractors, switchgear and panel builders, utilities and facility operators in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. On a typical industrial site, most cable terminations are outside classified areas, in substations, MCC rooms, pump houses and building services, so a robust standard gland with the same size coding as the CMP explosive atmosphere range makes material planning simpler across the whole project.

Operating Principle

An industrial armoured cable gland has three tasks. First, it must clamp the armour wires so that they carry fault current to earth; the CMP CW clamps the wires between a detachable armour cone and the AnyWay universal clamping ring, giving Category B electrical performance under IEC 62444. Second, it must hold the cable against pull-out and twisting; the gland achieves Class D cable anchorage and impact Level 8. Third, it must seal the outer sheath to keep moisture out of the armour and the enclosure.

That third job is handled by the CMP load retention seal (LRS), a thermoset rubber outer seal that grips the sheath without crushing it. Over-tightening an outer seal is one of the most common causes of damaged sheaths and failed IP tests, so CMP provides an outer seal tightening guide (OSTG) that gives the number of turns for each cable diameter. With CMP installation accessories, the CMP CW achieves IP66 as standard, and IP67 or IP68 can be supplied on request.

Engineering Design of the CMP CW

The gland is designed to BS 6121 Part 1, IEC 62444 and EN 62444, the same design standards as the CMP Ex range, so the mechanical behaviour and size coding are familiar to installers who already use CMP explosive atmosphere glands. Brass and stainless steel versions achieve IK10 (20 joules) to IEC 62262. The operating temperature range is -60 °C to +130 °C, and a deluge-proof variant, designated CWD, is available for areas exposed to firewater or heavy spray.

Seventeen sizes cover cables from 6.1 mm to 123.2 mm overall diameter, with metric entries from M20 to M130 and NPT options from 1/2 in to 5 in. Thread lengths are 10 mm for sizes up to 32 and 15 or 24 mm above that. The CMP CW is also sold as cable gland kits for SWA: for sizes up to and including 32 mm, each kit contains two brass glands, two steel locknuts, two brass earth tags and two PVC shrouds, while for 40 mm and above each kit contains one of each component.

Key Features

The CMP CW is selected for industrial SWA terminations because of these characteristics:

  • Robust, heavy duty design in high quality brass, nickel plated brass, stainless steel or aluminium.
  • Metal-to-metal armour clamping with a detachable cone and the AnyWay universal clamping ring.
  • Unique CMP load retention outer seal with the outer seal tightening guide to prevent over-tightening.
  • Direct and remote installation for awkward enclosures and pre-made cable ends.
  • IP66 as standard, with IP67 and IP68 available, and a deluge-proof CWD option.
  • Operating temperature range of -60 °C to +130 °C for outdoor and hot-environment use.
  • Superior EMC performance through continuous armour contact.
  • Marine approvals from Lloyd’s Register and ABS, plus a GOST R certificate.

Industrial Applications

Typical CMP CW applications include SWA terminations at LV switchboards, motor control centres, VFD panels, transformer marshalling boxes, pump and blower motors, lighting panels, building services plant and outdoor control kiosks. It suits power plants, desalination and water treatment works, district cooling plants, ports, warehouses, cement and mining sites and the safe-area portions of oil and gas facilities, for example SWA motor cables leaving a variable speed drive such as the Danfoss VLT HVAC Drive FC 102 or feeders protected by an Eaton NZMN1-A80 moulded case circuit breaker. Note that the CMP CW carries no Ex certification and must not be used in Zone 1 or Zone 2 areas; for those, the CMP E1FW or T3CDS is the equivalent explosive atmosphere choice.

In Oman, the CMP CW fits the large volume of SWA cabling on utility, infrastructure and industrial projects in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm, Salalah and the interior. Seven Star LLC supplies the CMP CW individually or as kits with locknuts, earth tags and shrouds, and our Muscat engineers can convert a cable schedule into a gland list using the CMP selection table. For alternatives in other ranges, the Hawke 501/421 industrial cable gland is also available.

About brand
CMP Products makes cable glands and cable cleats, and little else. Founded in 1957 and based in Cramlington, United Kingdom, the company is a name that appears on hazardous-area cable schedules for oil, gas and power projects. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies CMP cable glands for explosive atmospheres to contractors in Oman, including the E1FW and the Triton T3CDS listed on this page.

CMP cable glands listed here

The T3CDS Triton is a gland for armored cables with a compensating displacement seal, a design that sets the inner seal correctly across the cable diameter range, and an integral deluge seal. CMP lists it as Ex db, Ex eb, Ex nR and Ex ta, with IP66, IP67 and IP68 ratings. The E1FW is the explosive atmosphere gland for steel wire armored (SWA) and aluminum wire armored (AWA) cable.

Ordering CMP glands: what we need

A gland is sized to the cable, so send the cable type and three dimensions: inner bedding diameter, outer sheath diameter and armor wire size. Add the entry thread and size (metric or NPT), the gland material (brass, nickel-plated brass or stainless steel) and accessories such as locknut, earth tag, sealing washer and shroud. GCC project specifications usually name the certificate required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the CMP CW be used in hazardous areas?
No. The CMP CW is an industrial cable gland without explosion protection certification and is intended for safe, non-hazardous areas. For Zone 1 and Zone 2 SWA terminations, CMP explosive atmosphere glands such as the E1FW or T3CDS should be used.
What is included in a CMP CW cable gland kit?
For sizes up to and including 32 mm, a kit contains two brass cable glands, two steel locknuts, two brass earth tags and two PVC shrouds. For 40 mm and above, each kit includes one of each component.
What ingress protection does the CMP CW achieve?
The CMP CW is IP66 as standard when CMP installation accessories are used, and IP67 or IP68 can be supplied on request. A deluge-proof version, the CWD, is also available.
Which cable types does the CMP CW suit?
The gland is designed for single wire armour (SWA) and aluminium wire armour (AWA) cables. The armour is clamped metal-to-metal between a detachable cone and the AnyWay universal clamping ring for earth continuity.
